A Victorian Family (3 Volumes)
by: Molly Hughes

Softcover. NY, Oxford University Press, reprint, 1980, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Three softcover books in a pictorial cardboard slipcase. This is Molly Hughes' autobiographical account of her life in Victorian London. A London Child of the 1870s, A London Girl of the 1880s, and A London Home of the 1890s. The perceptive trilogy traces her early life through schooldays, studies, and travels abroad, to the closing years of the last century, when she was married and bringing up a family of her own, showing that Victorian children did not have such a dull time as is usually supposed. A Woman's Story of Pioneer Illinois
by: Tillson, Christiana Holmes; Milo Milton Quaife (ed.)

Hardcover. Chicago, The Lakeside Press, 1st, 1919, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, dark green cloth stamped in gilt, top edge gilt, 137 pages. Tight, attractive copy of this early "Lakeside Classic," the annual keepsake presented by this printer/publisher to friends and clients starting in 1903. Illustrated with two portraits of the author. So many pioneer stories were written at the request of a child or grandchild. What makes Christiana Tillson's humorous memoir different was her background. Tillson's story records the reactions produced upon a refined New England woman by an environment at once predominantly southern and wholly frontier. Her youth in 1822 and her parting from all that she had known in the East were common of many later Western migrants. But when she and her husband went out to try their fortunes, the "West" was what we today call the Midwest. It was still a wild, dangerous, and uncertain place to try to make a future. Clean, bright copy.

Breakfast with Lucian: The Astounding Life and Outrageous Times of Britain's Great Modern Painter
by: Greig, Geordie

Hardcover. New York , Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 260 pages, illustrations in color and b&w. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. Lucian Freud's paintings are instantly recognizable: often shocking and disturbing, his portraits convey a profound yet compelling sense of discomfort. Freud was twice married and the father of at least a dozen children, and his numerous relationships with women were the subject of much gossip-but the man himself remained a mystery. An intensely private individual (during his lifetime he prevented two planned biographies from being published), Freud's life, as well as his art, invites questions that have had no answer-until now. In Breakfast with Lucian, Geordie Greig, one of a few close friends who regularly had breakfast with the painter during the last years of his life, tells an insider's account-accessible, engaging, revealing-of one of the twentieth century's most fascinating, enigmatic, and controversial artists. Greig, who has studied his subject's work at length, unravels the tangled thread of a life lived on Freud's own uncompromising terms. Based on private conversations in which Freud held forth on everything from first love to gambling debts to the paintings of Velazquez, and informed by interviews with friends, lovers, and some of the artist's children who have never before spoken publicly about their relationships with the painter, this is a deeply personal memoir that is illuminated by a keen appreciation of Freud's art.

Caves of Ice
by: James Lees-Milne

Softcover. London, Faber & Faber, reprint, 1986, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 276 pages. This work is a sequel to the author's wartime diaries - "Ancestral voices" and "Prophesying peace", and takes the story on into 1946-47 around England on behalf of the National Trust. James Lees-Milne is known as much for his work shaping the National Trust's collection of significant English country houses as for his diaries detailing upper and upper-middle class life in the mid-twentieth century. For a pupil who showed little promise he defied scholarly estimation to publish some 34 books. Clean copy.
