An illustrated fashion history from the 1920s to the present. Chock full of pictures and information, cataloging our love affair with the swimsuit and beach life in general. This book covers the period from the mid-nineteenth century, when the railways first made the seaside accessible to all, right up to the modern day, with supermodels strutting their stuff on the catwalk for Gucci and Versace. There's tons of info on the chronology of fabrics, from heavy felts and wools, up to modern synthetics. And a wealth of illustrations show bathing machines, 30's lido's, knobbly knees contests - and my favourite of all - dozens of vintage adverts for swimwear.

This 1996 first printing collection contains all the icons of Newton's special fields of interest including fashion, nudes, portraits as well as works for which he became world famous: the sensational fashion photos for the British magazine Vogue, Liz Taylor with a parrot in a swimming pool, Helmut Berger naked at his fireplace, Helmut Kohl with a German oak, Salvador Dali on an IV drip, the "Big Nudes" and some of his later macabre wax figures. Mary Elliott (then Mary Belson) began writing for children in 1809, at a time when increasing literacy and wealth and more progressive understanding of the reading needs of children were creating a growing demand for more and more books for young people. Beginning with two books in verse - one a lively tale about town and country mice, the other, an anthology including many of her own poems - she went on to produce a stream of books on a variety of subjects. Her stories, some eventful and exciting, were mostly about real children learning to tackle the everyday circumstances and difficulties which they encountered in the world around them. These books were made all the more attractive by her publisher, William Darton, who provided them with entertaining illustrations, many of them interesting today for their depiction of contemporary scenes and fashions. Mary Elliott's books soon spread across the Atlantic, and American publishers reissued many of them, sometimes adapting the text to local circumstances. Although her books are now forgotten, they cannot be disregarded by researchers into the history of childhood and of children's literature. This bibliography contains about 470 entries. Clean.

Liz Jobey's brief but illuminating introduction brings cohesion to thie fab book of photos of EMI pop and rock musicians of the late 1950's and the 1960's. It's EMI, and only EMI, but considering the artists who once signed with this British label, including the Beatles, Little Richard, David Bowie, Jeff Beck Group, Rod Stewart, Pretty Things, Pink Floyd, Steppenwolf, (Sir) Cliff Richards, Three Dog Night, Chubbie Checkers, Spencer Davis Group, the Yardbirds--EMI's talent pool was as rich as any label. The most only obvious omissions among the Brits (i.e., EMI never signed them) would probably be the Stones, the Who, and the Kinks. The photographs are enjoyable as kitsch, as a window into period fashion and sensibilities, and, occasionally, as great photography.
