I Am André: German Jew, French Resistance Fighter, British Spy
by: Diana Mara Henry

Hardcover. Chiselbury, 1st, 2024, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in glossy pictorial boards, 356 pages. An amazing real-life story of espionage, of courage and resistance, and of friendship and love. It pulls back the veil on the hidden history of the struggle for the identity of the Resistance in France. The life of 'André' Joseph Scheinmann is more intriguing and compelling than any work of fiction. His true-life story of derring-do starts as a Jewish youth in Munich, whose family moves to France in 1933 to escape the Nazi tide. He joins the French army at the outbreak of WW2 and escapes from a prisoner-of war camp after the bitterly brief fight for France in the summer of 1940. André becomes a spy and saboteur for the British and Free French whilst working undercover as translator and liaison with the German high command at the Brittany headquarters of the French National Railroads. Summoned by the British, he clandestinely crosses the Channel for initiation and training as an MI6 agent in England. His network betrayed during his absence, he is arrested on his return to France. André then begins an even more perilous journey with interrogation in Gestapo prisons and the little-known Natzweiler concentration camp in Alsace, before being transferred to Dachau and Allach, ahead of the advancing Allies. Illustrated with over 120 vintage and color photographs and letters. Clean copy.

January
by: Sara Gallardo (Author), Frances Riddle (Translator)

Softcover. NY, Archipelago Books, 1st transl. thus, 2023, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover in pictorial wrappers, 114 pages. "This debut novel--by an acclaimed Argentinean writer, and first published in 1958--centers on a sixteen-year-old who becomes pregnant after an assault by an older man. Setting the story in the sweltering heat of Argentina's Pampas, Gallardo re-creates the world of ranchers and missionaries from the perspective of the girl, with her adolescent confusion and private sense of guilt. Gallardo juxtaposes her solitary desperation--she visits a local medicine woman for an abortion, and gallops recklessly on horseback to induce a miscarriage--with the conservative Catholic society that closes ranks against her." Clean, bright copy.

Letters From a Portuguese Nun to an Officer in the French Army. Being a Reproduction of the Edition of 1817
by: N/A

Hardcover. NY, Brentano's , reprint, 1904, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, cloth spine with printed paper label; gray printed paper over cardboard boards. In 1669, a Parisian bookseller published a slim volume called Portuguese Letters, which unveiled a love affair between a young Portuguese nun and a French officer that had occurred a few years earlier during a war-torn period in Portugal. The book contained 12 passionate love letters from the nun when the officer was forced to return to France. The letters took Paris by storm. They spoke of love in a manner so direct, so precise, and so raw, they sent shivers of recognition through the sophisticated stratums of polite society. Equally remarkable was the mystery that surrounds the letters: the author was unknown, and most people assumed they were the fictional product of a French aristocrat. Copy of the 1817 London edition including a frontispiece portrait of the nun writing a letter. Clean copy.
