A long-suffering man who tries to please his crabby and demanding wife is bested by a sly fox in this Hungarian folktale. In the dead of winter, an old peasant woman insists that her husband rustle up some succulent fish to eat. Obsessed, she embroiders fish patterns on the napkins and hums fish songs until she drives her husband batty. In June he finally embarks on a fishing expedition and hauls in a great catch. Outfoxed by a fish-loving fox, the man returns home empty-handed, surely to endure more henpecking. Clean copy.

Beginning as a teenager as a callboy, by age 17 Bromley was aboard the engine, throwing wood pieces into one of the last of the old wood-burning models. At 20 he was promoted to the right-hand side of the cab, becoming the youngest engineer with the line. His entertaining reminiscences describe the more relaxed freight schedules of the day, when the crew could stop on a siding for several hours of fishing or to visit family and friends. Illustrated with line drawings by Stephen Voorhies, 288 pages. Long inscription on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

Maggie Lee Sayre was born deaf near Paducah, Kentucky, in 1920. She lived 51 years of her life on a river houseboat as her family made a living fishing throughout Kentucky and Tennessee. This collection of her photos, accompanied by descriptive captions from Sayre, reveals a traditional river culture that is rooted in subsistence living. Clean copy.

Margaret Eaton and her husband Ira were well known to Santa Barbarans in the early part of this century as operators of the Pelican Bay Camp on Santa Cruz Island. Beginning humbly with small-scale commercial fishing, seal hunting and passenger charters, the Eatons gradually developed a unique resort that came to be popular among writers, film companies and people from all over the country. Working from her diary and her memories, Mrs. Eaton wrote this extraordinary story of her life over a period of many years, until her death in 1947. She is remembered by her daughter, Vera Eaton Amey, as a fearless and compassionate women. Mrs. Amey has done admirably well in sorting through mountains of letters, clippings and photographs to organize her mother's manuscript. She has also painstakingly consulted other sources to confirm, as much as possible, the accuracy of these recollections.
