Athlete/Warrior
by: Jonathan Anderson / Edwin Low

Hardcover. NY/London, Merrell Publishers, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, lightly worn dust jacket, 191 pages. In Athlete/Warrior, photographers Anderson & Low present photographs of young men and women who are training for both the sports field and the battlefield while studying at America's three famed armed forces academies: the US Military Academy, West Point, in New York State, the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, and the US Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Arresting juxtapositions of cadets in their military dress - from formal to fatigues - and in the uniforms of their chosen sports, including swimming, boxing, football, gymnastics, and basketball, among others, reveal subtle similarities and differences between the roles assumed by such disciplined and dedicated individuals. The resonant images in Athlete/Warrior go beyond the military and sporting uniforms to highlight both the humanity of the individuals portrayed and the noble aspirations that they embody. Clean copy. Cowboy Up
by: Frank/ Dirk Johnson (Introduction) , Arthur

Hardcover. New York, Powerhouse Books, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 128 pages, b&w photographs of rodeo performers. In publisher's shrinkwrap. After reading a front-page article in The New York Times about the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo, Arthur Frank took a week off from work to travel around Wyoming, photographing whatever rodeos he could find. Once there, he found the culture of the American cowboy very much alive and kicking. Although their practical skills remain essential to modern ranching, it is the rodeo where their trade is praised, perpetuating the myth and mystique of America?s rough and rugged icon?the cowboy. Cowboy Up, Frank?s first monograph, presents photographs taken at more than fifty rodeos?including high school, college, and women?s competitions in addition to professional rodeos?in Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota, Nevada,Arizona, Calgary, Alberta, even Binghamton, New York. As a former football and rugby player from New York City, Frank approached the roundup with an athlete?s understanding, while his profession provided distance from the cliches associated with the sport. With photographs that capture the vigorous physicality of one of the world?s most erratic and dangerous sports, Cowboy Up delves deeply into the modern cowboy?s life, capturing riders during the jittery wait before the roundup, and back at the ranch, engaging in work that tamed the Wild West. Frank?s outsider perspective and insider access combine to provide a humanistic yet dynamic and inspiring view into a lifestyle that has become an American legend.

by: Levy, Aaron

Softcover. Italy, Charta, 1st, 2009, Book: Near Fine, Dust Jacket: None, 148 pages. Softcover. Color illustrations. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. New York-based Dennis Oppenheim has been active in many realms: conceptual and performance art, earthworks and photography. He was recently recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2007 Vancouver Sculpture Biennale. Following his early earthworks, Oppenheim began creating the whimsical, architecturally-derived public sculpture for which he is known today--works such as "Tempest in a Teacup" (1992), a steel and glass piece located in the mountains of Andorra, which responds to the proximity of the sky and changing weather conditions. This overview of public commissions includes recent works like the large, football-shaped "Electric Field" (2006) at Oregon State University, which employs fluorescent lights to portray the strategic movements possible in a game.

Going Long: The Wild Ten-Year Saga of the Renegade American Football League in the Words of Those Who Lived It
by: Jeff Miller

Hardcover. NY, Contemporary Books, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 398 pages. From its inauspicious beginnings through its improbable Super Bowl victories and its ultimate demise, the American Football League had a colorful and sometimes bizarre ten-year history that will not soon be forgotten. Going Long takes you back to that thrilling decade with the men who made the AFL--and who made it great. In this unique oral history, 170 voices come together to tell the unbelievable story of that maverick league, a rollicking tale of eight teams that refused to die. In 1959, the NFL had just a dozen teams, with only two located west of the Mississippi River. For forty years, it had enjoyed total dominance over the gridiron, tackling rival franchises and knocking them out of the game. But a revolution was coming to American football, and it all began with a man named Lamar Hunt, the Texas millionaire who desperately wanted a league of his own. With a team of enthusiastic investors, Hunt fired what he later called "the first cannon shot in what turned out to be the pro football war." It was a war that would rage on for ten rough-and-tumble years. Flavored with wild (and often ribald) anecdotes, inside stories, personal interviews, and never-before-told material, Going Long brings the incredible story of the upstart AFL to life through the words of the players, coaches, owners, and others who lived it--including Joe Namath, Mike Ditka, Bubba Smith, Roger Staubach, Pat Summerall, Curt Gowdy, and many others. Hearkening back to a simpler time in sports, this behind-the-scenes true story reveals the origins of the modern game we know today and how it all began with a fight to the death for professional football supremacy.

Hamilton's Blessing: The Extraordinary Life and Times of Our National Debt
by: John Steele Gordon

Hardcover. NY, Walker Books, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 214 pages. Over the past couple of decades, our national debt has become a favorite political football for Democrats and Republicans alike. Yet few Americans seem aware that the debt has a long and (mostly) honorable history. Alexander Hamilton considered it a kind of political Krazy Glue, which would also spur American industry by keeping taxes high. This borrowing power enabled the North to win the Civil War without wrecking its economy and rescued us from the Great Depression. John Steele Gordon doesn't deny the dangers of an entire nation living on credit; indeed, he believes that our fiscal affairs are a mess. But he puts this mess in fascinating perspective. And he's quick to see the human side of economic behavior: "One problem," he writes, "is that human nature predisposes us to recognize depression easily and quickly, but prosperity, like happiness, is most easily seen in retrospect." Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

Irwin Shaw: A Biography
by: Michael Shnayerson

Hardcover. NY, G.P. Putman's Sons, 1st, 1989, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a nice, unclipped dust jacket, 447 pages. B&w photos. Although he aspired to Princeton, Irwin Gilbert Shamforoff (aka Shaw) had to settle for local Brooklyn College, where he seems to have enjoyed football more than his studies. From his mid-20s, however, Shaw (1913-1984) was a highly regarded New Yorker short story writer ("The Girls in Their Summer Dresses") and left-wing playwright ( Bury the Dead ), and later became a successful Hollywood script writer and novelist ( The Young Lions ; Rich Man, Poor Man ). This sympathetic, objective biography, by a Vanity Fair contributing editor, convincingly shows how Shaw's career, character and fiction, influenced more by Hemingway's lifestyle than by his writing, were marked by incongruities. Far from abating with age, his romantic and alcoholic appetites overwhelmed him. Years of high living in Europe, surrounded by adoring friends, softened his self-judgment, and he took to writing "fluffy essays for swells." The New Yorker dropped him, and "serious" critics panned his novels. Shnayerson capably contrasts Shaw's inclinations and personality with his subject matter and literary output, and is especially astute at explaining the complications of being a commercially successful midcentury American writer. Junction Boys How Ten Days in Hell with Bear Bryant Forged a Champioship Team
by: Dent, Jim

Hardcover. NY, St. Martin's Press, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. The legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant is recognized nationwide as one of the greatest coaches ever. So why did he always cite his 1-9 A&M team of 1954 as his favorite? This is the story of a remarkable team - and the beginning of the legend. The Junction Boys tells the story of Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant's legendary training camp in the small town of Junction, Texas. In a move that many consider the salvation of the Texas A&M football program, Coach Bryant put 115 players through the most grueling practices ever imagined. Only a handful of players survived the entire 10 days, but they braved the intense heat of the Texas sun and the burning passion of their coach, and turned a floundering team into one of the nation's best. Hardcover. NY, Knopf, 1st, 1982, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. A massive novel illustrated with photographs by Joel Gardner. John Gardner's final novel follows Peter Mickelsson, former football player and current Professor of Philosophy at Binghamton University. Mickelsson is driven, opinionated, probably a drunk, definitely bankrupt, and perhaps going completely mad. During his personal descent, which he seems powerless to arrest, he somehow scrounges enough money together to buy a farmhouse in northern Pennsylvania's Endless Mountains, which seems to be haunted by the ghosts of an incestuous family. Mickelsson's farmhouse sanctuary was (it turns out) not only the residence of Joseph Smith, the Mormon prophet, but the scene of a murder; the place is haunted. Clean copy.
