They go on hayrides, search for wildflowers, and at one point in the story Maria gets lost! Buck, a blacksmith, comes to work at Oak Valley. Buck discovers there is a great deal to learn from the children about the ranch. In return, he explains his trade to them and helps them care for their horses.
