Edith Halpert: The Downtown Gallery and the Rose of American Art
by: Shaykin, Rebecca

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 232 pages. The question "What is American art?" might conjure the hyperrealism of Raphaelle Peale and William Harnett, the bold graphic style of Stuart Davis and Jacob Lawrence, or the Precisionist forms of Charles Sheeler. Little known, however, is that such notions of American art are significantly owed to a Russian Jewish immigrant named Edith Halpert. The founder of the Downtown Gallery in New York, Halpert shaped an identity for American art, declaring that its thrilling heterogeneity and democratic values were what most distinguished it from the European avant-garde. For forty-plus years, Halpert's gallery brought recognition and market success to now-legendary American artists--among them Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, and Georgia O'Keeffe, in addition to the artists mentioned above. She relentlessly championed nonwhite, female, and unknown artists and was a formative advisor in the shaping of many of the nation's most celebrated art museums and collections, from San Francisco to Boston. Not content with those achievements, she also pioneered the appreciation and collecting of American folk art. Richly illustrated with works that passed through her groundbreaking gallery, this book tells the extraordinary and largely overlooked story of her career and legacy. The artists Halpert launched into the American canon are household names--and this book compellingly argues that hers should be, as well. In publisher's shrinkwrap.

by: Johnson, Charles

Hardcover. New York, Viking Press, 1st, 1974, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 196 pages. Publisher's release and photo of author laid in. Foxing to top edge. Spine slightly cocked. Else a very clean, tight copy. The author's first work of fiction and his second book to be published (the first being a philosophical work published 1988 under the title "Being and Race: Black Writing Since 1970"). Writing of this debut Novel in the New York Times, Anne Gotlieb stated "This is a strange and often wonderful hybrid -- an ebullient philosophical novel in the form of a folktale-cum-black girl's odyssey. It is a book bubbling like a conjure woman's kettle with African lore, preserved intact in the half-magical, half-demeaning world of Hatten County, Georgia."

by: Rogers, William Warren

Hardcover. Tallahassee FL, Sentry Press, 1st, 1989, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 224 pages, b&w photos. Signed by Rogers and inscribed by Kate Ireland, owner of Foshalee plantation, on the title page. Foshalee Plantation is a historic quail hunting estate located in northern Leon County, Florida, approximately 12 miles north of Tallahassee, within the Red Hills region spanning the Georgia-Florida border. Originally encompassing around 11,500 acres, it was established in the early 20th century as one of the oldest continuous private quail preserves in the area, transformed from former cotton lands into a managed hunting retreat for northern elites. The plantation, associated with prominent families including the Whitneys, Clarks, Irelands, and Ingalls, emphasized bobwhite quail production through practices like prescribed burning and multi-aged forest management, reflecting the broader shift in the region from agriculture to sporting conservation after the Civil War.

Genealogies of Barbados Families: From Caribbeana and the Journal of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society
by: James C. Branow

Hardcover. Baltimore, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1st, 1983, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, black cloth with gilt lettering, 733 pages. Many of the early settlers of Barbados eventually moved to the mainland of North America and settled in Virginia, Georgia, the Carolinas, and other colonies. Records of Barbados families exist in a variety of places and indeed a great many have been written up and published in the turn-of-the-century journal "Caribbeana" and "The Journal of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society". Unfortunately, back issues of these journals are no longer available, and copies can be found today in only a handful of libraries. With this present work, however, genealogists at last have access to both of these publications, for the book contains every article pertaining to family history ever published in these journals. The combined articles, reprinted here in facsimile, range from conventional genealogies and pedigrees to will abstracts and Bible records and refer to some 15,000 persons, all of whom are listed in the index. Besides the genealogies and family records, this compilation also contains a selection of notes on the connections between Barbados and New England families and four invaluable lists of Barbados Quakers.

Georgia O'Keeffe: A Life
by: Roxana Robinson

Softcover. Hanover NH, University Press of New England, reprint, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 679 pages, b&w illustrations. Georgia O'Keeffe is arguably the 20th century's leading woman artist. Coming of age along with American modernism, her life was rich in intense relationships -- with family, friends, and especially noted photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Her struggle between the rigorous demands of love and work resulted in extraordinary accomplishments. Her often-eroticized flowers, bones, stones, skulls, and pelvises became extremely well known to a broad American public. The New York Times Book Review named this richly detailed and moving biography a Notable Book of the Year. Clean, bright copy.

Grand Hotels of the Jazz Age: The Architecture of Schultze & Weaver
by: Marianne Lamonaca

Hardcover. Princeton Architectural Press, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 256 pages. The Breakers, the Waldorf, the Biltmore, the Sherry, the Pierre--these landmark hotels are synonymous with grand luxury and style. When they were built, in the 1920s, their refined elegance and grandeur set the bar for hotels and resorts the world over. Responsible for creating these and countless other hotels throughout the United States, were the partners of a single architectural firm: Schultze & Weaver. Together, this duo--an architect and an engineer--virtually invented the glamorous lifestyle made famous in films like Grand Hotel. Catering to the social elite of which they were themselves a part, Schultze & Weaver synthesized the Old World style of Renaissance Italy, Moorish Spain, and Georgian England with all of the modern amenities that made hotel living luxurious. This book presents portfolios of fifteen of the firm's most spectacular hotels, culminating in the Art Moderne masterpiece of the Waldorf-Astoria. Over two hundred period photographs and hand-colored architectural renderings chart the ascent of the American hotel in all its glory and glamour, before the Great Depression forever changed the lifestyles of America's rich and famous. Essays address the cultural and technological developments that underpin the creation of resort and residential hotels, including the elemental role played by Schultze & Weaver.
