Hardcover. Cambridge UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 1987, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 288 pages. This substantial and unusual volume is not an encyclopedic summary of names, dates, and images but a roughly chronological series of scholarly, sometimes provocative essays by specialists in various aspects of the medium's history. Contributors (identified only in the table of contents) are from France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, England, and the United States. The chapters on photo-journalism, the illustrated press, and photography between the world wars are particularly informative, while high-quality illustrations from public and private collections worldwide convey photography's technical and aesthetic development and its ubiquity.

Alfred Stieglitz: Taking Pictures Making Painters
by: Rose, Phyllis

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 259 pages, b&w, some color illustrations. Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) was an enormously influential artist and nurturer of artists even though his accomplishments are often overshadowed by his role as Georgia O'Keeffe's husband. This new book from celebrated biographer Phyllis Rose reconsiders Stieglitz as a revolutionary force in the history of American art. Born in New Jersey, Stieglitz at age eighteen went to study in Germany, where his father, a wool merchant and painter, insisted he would get a proper education. After returning to America, he became one of the first American photographers to achieve international fame. By the time he was sixty, he gave up photography and devoted himself to selling and promoting art. His first gallery, 291, was the first American gallery to show works by Picasso, Rodin, Matisse, and other great European modernists. His galleries were not dealerships so much as open universities, where he introduced European modern art to Americans and nurtured an appreciation of American art among American artists. Clean copy.

Architects of Annihilation: Auschwitz and the Logic of Destruction
by: Aly, Gotz and Susanne Heim

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st US, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 378 pages. Translated by A.G. Bluden. Two of Germany's most provocative investigative historians examine the frightening role of young educated careerists in building the Holocaust's ideological and material infrastructure. Moving from the waning Weimar Republic to Auschwitz's fully operating gas chambers, Architects of Annihilation shows how the unthinkable technocratic "solutions" to Germany's wartime problems were not only thought but spelled out and implemented. Documenting the eager participation of some of the country's best and brightest, it rejects interpretations that identify only Nazi leaders as the perpetrators of the Holocaust. Clean copy.

August Sander: 'In Photography There Are No Unexplained Shadows'
by: Sander, August (Photographer)

Hardcover. London, National Portrait Gallery, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 269 pages, hardcover with dust jacket. Photographs throughout, spotless and tight copy. Following his maxim, 'Look, Observe and Think', the German photographer, August Sander, was a craftsman of unerring precision. Despising 'tricks, poses and effects', Sander found inspiration in his determination to create images which were absolutely 'true to nature'. His resulting body of work is a diverse catalogue of portraits which capture people of all ages, from every social setting and calling, which provide, in turn, a rich overview of the personalities who shaped Germany's Weimar Republic. A master of camera portraiture, August Sander began photographing people as a boy around the iron-ore mines of his German hometown. As he grew older, he began to foster strong ideas about the function of photography. These opinions culminated in his 'Confession of Faith in Photography', written in 1927, where he talked of showing the 'truth about our age and its people'. This vision is reflected in the universal quality his images share: the innate ability of the photographer to present more than a portrait to show the characters of his sitters. Published to coincide with the National Portrait Gallery's major exhibition of Sander's photographs, this fascinating book offers a comprehensive overview of Sander's rich body of work. Opening with an introductory essay which gives a thorough analysis of Sander's techniques, the book's range of black and white photographs (over 190 in total) are interspersed with contemporary observations regarding Sander's work (these include the photographer's own words). Spanning more than fifty years, the images shown in August Sander offer a pictorial overview of an era and its people. Dominated by the portraits which make up his huge portfolio, 'People of the 20th Century', this catalogue also includes family photographs and a selection of Sander's haunting landscapes.

Berlin Journal, 1989-1990
by: Robert Darnton

Hardcover. NY, Norton, 1st, 1991, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 352 pages. Shock waves from the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 continue to pulse through German society. As the difficult process of reunification continues, it is worth recalling the revolutionary moment when immense crowds took to the streets of Leipzig and Berlin under the banner "We Are the People" and brought down one of the world's most oppressive dictatorships. Robert Darnton's eyewitness account of those historic days "is direct and vivid. His prose conveys the immediacy of the drama." He gives us a memorable cast of characters, from two experts on the repair of broken-down Trabis to the environmental councilor for the polluted city of Bitterfeld, and Isaak Behar, a Jew who managed to survive the Holocaust while hiding in wartime Berlin. With wit and insight Darnton takes us behind the scenes to meet "ordinary people grappling with great change, humanizing history."

Biologists Under Hitler
by: Ute Deichmann / Thomas Dunlap (Translator)

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, Harvard University Press, 1st US, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket with minor edgewear, 468 pages. Biologists under Hitler combines exhaustive research with capsule biographies of key scientists to overturn certain assumptions about science under the Nazi regime. Biological research, for instance, was neither neglected nor underfunded during World War II; funding by the German Research Association (DFG) in fact increased tenfold between 1933 and 1938, and genetic research in particular flourished. Deichmann shows that the forced emigration of Jews had a less significant impact in biology than in other fields. Furthermore, she reveals that the widely observed decline in German biology after 1945 was not caused primarily by the Third Reich's science policy or by the expulsion of biologists but was due to the international isolation of German scientists as part of the legacy of National Socialism. Her book also provides overwhelming evidence of German scientists' conscious misrepresentation after the war of their wartime activities. In this regard, Deichmann's capsule biography of Konrad Lorenz is particularly telling. Clean copy.

by: Kuehn, Karl Gernot

Hardcover. Berkeey, University of California, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 305 pages, nearly 150 b&w photos accompany the text. A survey of photography in East Germany; from 1945 to 1989. In a very good dust jacket with light fade to spine. "Behind the Iron Curtain, against all odds, photography flourished as an art in the German Democratic Republic. The many images in this volume amply demonstrate that fact while also providing an illustrated social history of people 'caught' in the conflicting dictates of ideology, artistic oppression, a troubled national past, and basic human desires."

Cleansing the Fatherland: Nazi Medicine and Racial Hygiene
by: Dr. Gotz Aly / Peter Chroust/Christian Pross

Softcover. Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University Press, 1st, 1994, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 295 pages. The infamous Nuremberg Doctors' Trials of 1946-47 revealed horrifying crimes --ranging from grotesque medical experiments on humans to mass murder--committed by physicians and other health care workers in Nazi Germany. But far more common, argue the authors of Cleansing the Fatherland, were the doctors who profited professionally and financially from the killings but were never called to task--and, indeed, were actively shielded by colleagues in postwar German medical organizations. The authors examine the role of German physicians in such infamous operations as the "T 4" euthanasia program (code-named for the Berlin address of its headquarters at Number 4 Tiergartenstrasse). They also reveal details of countless lesser known killings--all ordered by doctors and all in the name of public health. Maladjusted adolescents, the handicapped, foreign laborers too illto work, even German civilians who suffered mental breakdowns after air raids were "selected for treatment." (One physician who persisted in speaking of "killings" was officially reprimanded for his "negative attitude.") The book also includes original documents--never before published in English--that give unique and chilling insight into the everyday workings of Nazi medicine. Clean copy.

Close-Ups of History: Three Decades through the Lens of an AP Photographer
by: Henry Burroughs and Margaret Wohlgemuth Burroughs

Hardcover. University of Missouri, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 288 pages. A "shooter" for the Associated Press for thirty-three years, Burroughs was assigned to the Washington bureau, and his photos appeared frequently in newspapers around the world, as well as on the covers of Life and other magazines. Close-ups of History is both an eyewitness account of history and a stirring professional memoir--a book that brings special moments into the viewfinder as Burroughs turns his trained photographer's eye to reflect his highly cultivated sense of news. These dramatic photographs testify to an incredible career launched at the end of World War II, and Burroughs's work in postwar Germany is especially poignant. He documented the remains of Hitler's office, ruined cities and displaced persons, and the Nuremberg trials. He also captured the beginning of the Cold War as the Soviets tried to take over Berlin and the German people struggled to hold the city for the West.

Das Hotel Adlon
by: Demps, Laurenz/Paeschke, Carl-Ludwig

Hardcover. Berlin GR, Nicolai Publishing, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. GERMAN TEXT. The history of Berlin's grand hotel. The Adlon opened on October 23, 1907, with the Kaiser, his wife, and many other notables in attendance. It quickly became the social center of Berlin. As the rooms in the Stadtschloss were cold and drafty, the Kaiser paid an annual retainer to keep suites available for his guests.[2] Likewise the Foreign Office used the Adlon for accommodation during state visits, with guests including Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. Notable guests of the early years included industrialists such as Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and John D. Rockefeller, as well as politicians like Walter Rathenau, Gustav Stresemann and the French prime minister Aristide Briand. Many wealthy Berliners lived for extended periods of time in the hotel, while its ballrooms hosted official government functions and society events. Many photos. Clean copy.

Hardcover. Germany, Taschen, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 3-vol set in slip case. Hardcovers. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Editor Dian Hanson traces the fascinating development of the genre from 1900 to 1969 in three compact, informative volumes. In Volume 1 you'll learn about the first magazines that appeared around 1900 in France, Germany, and the U.S., and follow the development of the genre through the First and Second World Wars. Covered are men's magazines masquerading as movie magazines, humor magazines, art magazines, nudist magazines, and "spicy" fiction. Volume 2 documents the proliferation of pin-up magazines following World War II, most notably a little item called Playboy that debuted in December 1953 and spawned dozens of imitators. This volume also charts the emergence of English men's magazines, fetish magazines, and the top five covergirls of the 1950s. Volume 3 begins with an explosion of new American pin-up magazines following the loosening of U.S. obscenity laws, and continues with French titles in decline, England going pervy; nudists going hippy, and Germany going pervy, hippy and political.
