Book is clean and bright with color and b&w photographs by Evelyn Hofer. "Mostly Dublin as it was, in text, as it is, in photographs. Mr. Prichett...provides a historical perspective, indeed devotes himself to this to the near exclusion of current sights. These he leaves to Miss Hofer, whose portraits of aged revolutionaries, mods, seminaries speak a thousand words, whose delineations of Mountjoy Square, the Port are exquistely etched & tinged. The Earl of Wicklow, Lord Mayne, Sean O'Faolain, the death mask of James Joyce ~ high great names; Trinity College, Kilmainham Jail ~ historical presences are here. Taking as his main theme the relations with the English, Mr. Pritchett notes that "the inevitable politics remain, but the quarrel is over." Front flap creased, clean copy.

Since its invention, photography has been used to document and interpret the landscape. Survey photographers in the 1860s were the first environmental advocates, arguing for the U.S. national park system. During the first half of the 20th century photographers Ansel Adams and Eliot Porter were central figures in influencing American attitudes toward wilderness and conservation. This book traces the development of environmental photography beginning with Adams, Porter and others, and the next generation of landscape photographers - Robert Adams, Richard Misrach, Robert Glenn Ketchum, Patrick Nagatani, Mark Klett, whose works confronted the issues of landscape and the environment in less idealised terms. Shifting from the historical framework, the book presents new work by twenty-three photographers working in the U.S., the next wave of artists using the camera to engage the environmental issues of the day. He was known for using very little film, which increases an objective appreciation of his skill; he understood boxing and could anticipate moments of significance and arrange them to create technically superb photographs, without making dozens of pictures. The boxers depicted in this volume are now historical figures, but so are these photographs, of which Hoff is perhaps the best example. Live television coverage has changed the nature of boxing photography irrecoverably since the days when Hoff was photographing the sport. This volume is important as a historical document, then, from two angles - firstly as a record of what many perceive as the golden age of boxing, but also as an archive of amazing photography skills which are now impossible for photographers to learn, let alone master. A must for fans of both serious photography and boxing.

Her godchild Odette Dereze (born in 1932) followed in her godmother's footsteps from a young age and started a career as a photo journalist. A fresh, comprehensive, and critical look at the California gold rush through the lens of the daguerreotype camera. The California gold rush was the first major event in American history to be documented in depth by photography. This fascinating volume offers a fresh, comprehensive, and critical look at the people, places, and culture of that historical episode as seen through daguerreotypes and ambrotypes of the era. After gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1848, thousands made the journey to California, including daguerreotypists who established studios in cities and towns and ventured into the gold fields in specially outfitted photographic wagons. Their images, including portraits, views of cities and gold towns, and miners at work in the field, provide an extraordinary glimpse into the evolution of mining culture and technology, the variety of nationalities and races involved in the mining industry, and the growth of cities such as San Francisco and Sacramento. Photographs of glaciers and Arctic regions have existed almost as long as photography itself, as a function of documentary and mapmaking endeavors. As early as the 1860s, the medium was used to assess topology, capturing Arctic landscape at a distance and at close quarters, or producing stereoscopic images or panoramas. Glaciologists needed photographs to be taken year after year in order to assess the growth or contraction of the ice, and today repeat photography has become a valuable tool for documenting and demonstrating the real effects of global warming. In Infinite Ice, historical images are reproduced alongside the responses of contemporary artists who have addressed photography and landscape--for example, long, nighttime exposures by Darren Almond, aerial photographs by Olafur Eliasson or panoramic views by Walter Niedermayr. Featuring approximately 100 images, this volume presents a broad variety of glacial photography from 1860 to the present.

This important publication is the first comprehensive study and complete catalogue of Riis's world-famous images, and places him at the forefront of early-20th-century social reform photography. It is the culmination of more than two decades of research on Riis, assembling materials from five repositories (the Riis Collection at the Museum of the City of New York, the Library of Congress, the New-York Historical Society, the New York Public Library, and the Museum of South West Jutland, Denmark) as well as previously unpublished photographs and notes. In this handsome volume, Bonnie Yochelson proposes a novel thesis--that Riis was a radical publicist who utilized photographs to enhance his arguments, but had no great skill or ambition as a photographer. She also provides important context for understanding how Riis's work would be viewed in turn-of-the-century New York, whether presented in lantern slide lectures or newspapers. The definitive biography of Leni Riefenstahl, the woman best known as "Hitler's filmmaker," one of the most fascinating and controversial personalities of the twentieth century. It is the story of huge talent and huger ambition, one that probes the sometimes blurred borders dividing art and beauty from truth and humanity. Relying on new sources--including interviews with her colleagues and intimate friends, as well as on previously unknown recordings of Riefenstahl herself--Bach gives us an exceptional work of historical investigation that untangles the past and is also an objective but unsparing appraisal of a woman of spectacular gifts corrupted by ruthless personal ambition.
