Constabulary: The Rise of Police Institutions in Britain, the Commonwealth and the United States
by: Senior, Hereward

Softcover. Toronto CAN, Dundurn Press, 1st, 1997, Softcover, 192 pages, b&w illustrations. The insular character of Britain delayed the creation of professional police until the 19th century. This volume traces the course of British amateur policing until that time, at which point it deals with the foundation of the London Metropolitan Police and efforts to create similar professional urban institutions in New York and Montreal. Due attention is also given to the fact that very different conditions in rural Ireland necessitated the creation of a para-military type of force, which in turn served as the model for police in the countryside throughout the Empire. Clean copy.

Signed by Rogers and inscribed by Kate Ireland, owner of Foshalee plantation, on the title page. Foshalee Plantation is a historic quail hunting estate located in northern Leon County, Florida, approximately 12 miles north of Tallahassee, within the Red Hills region spanning the Georgia-Florida border. Originally encompassing around 11,500 acres, it was established in the early 20th century as one of the oldest continuous private quail preserves in the area, transformed from former cotton lands into a managed hunting retreat for northern elites. The plantation, associated with prominent families including the Whitneys, Clarks, Irelands, and Ingalls, emphasized bobwhite quail production through practices like prescribed burning and multi-aged forest management, reflecting the broader shift in the region from agriculture to sporting conservation after the Civil War.

John Locke, Toleration and Early Enlightenment Culture (Cambridge Studies in Early Modern British History)
by: Marshall, John

Hardcover. Cambridge UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 767 pages. 'This book is a major new intellectual and cultural history of intolerance and toleration in early modern and early Enlightenment Europe. John Marshall offers an extensive study of late seventeenth-century practices of religious intolerance and toleration in England, Ireland, France, Piedmont and the Netherlands and of the arguments which John Locke and his associates made in defence of 'universal religious toleration'. He analyses early modern and early Enlightenment discussions of toleration; debates over toleration for Jews and Muslims as well as for Christians; the limits of toleration for the intolerant, atheists, 'libertines' and 'sodomites'; and the complex relationships between intolerance and resistance theories including Locke's own Treatises. This study is a significant contribution to the history of the 'republic of letters' of the 1680s and the development of early Enlightenment culture and will be essential reading for scholars of early modern European history, religion, political science, and philosophy.' Passing the Time in Ballymenone
by: Henry Glassie

Softcover. Bloomington IN, Indiana University Press, reprint, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover in pictorial wrappers, 852 pages. The life and art, the folklore, history, and common work of a rural community in Northern Ireland-through the eyes and pen of gifted folklorist Henry Glassie. Glassie regards the people of Ballymenone with respect and affection, allowing them to describe their ideas, life-ways, and values on their own terms, not his. Recognizing that theirs is a mindset and lifestyle that must be seen as an integrated whole, Glassie studies everything about Ballymenone from traditional songs to entertainment to religious beliefs to architecture, liberally quoting from the people who welcomed him into their homes over his extended stays. Some of his insights are pure brilliance, such as recognizing the way the poets and storytellers of a rural Irish district have adapted ancient Gaelic metrics to the English they use today. You will learn more about Ireland and its people in this one book than in a host of others. Clean copy.
