Captives and Cousins: Slavery, Kinship, and Community in the Southwest Borderlands
by: Brooks, James F.

Softcover. Chapel Nill NC, University of North Carolina Press , 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 419 pages. This sweeping, richly evocative study examines the origins and legacies of a flourishing captive exchange economy within and among native American and Euramerican communities throughout the Southwest Borderlands from the Spanish colonial era to the end of the nineteenth century. Indigenous and colonial traditions of capture, servitude, and kinship met and meshed in the borderlands, forming a "slave system" in which victims symbolized social wealth, performed services for their masters, and produced material goods under the threat of violence. Slave and livestock raiding and trading among Apaches, Comanches, Kiowas, Navajos, Utes, and Spaniards provided labor resources, redistributed wealth, and fostered kin connections that integrated disparate and antagonistic groups even as these practices renewed cycles of violence and warfare. Always attentive to the corrosive effects of the "slave trade" on Indian and colonial societies, the book also explores slavery's centrality in intercultural trade, alliances, and "communities of interest" among groups often antagonistic to Spanish, Mexican, and American modernizing strategies. The extension of the moral and military campaigns of the American Civil War to the Southwest in a regional "war against slavery" brought differing forms of social stability but cost local communities much of their economic vitality. Eternity Street: Violence and Justice in Frontier Los Angeles
by: Faragher, John Mack

Hardcover. NY, W. W. Norton & Company, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 580 pages, b&w illustrations. Los Angeles is a city founded on blood. Once a small Mexican pueblo teeming with Californios, Indians, and Americans, all armed with Bowie knives and Colt revolvers, it was among the most murderous locales in the Californian frontier. In Eternity Street: Violence and Justice in Frontier Los Angeles, "a vivid, disturbing portrait of early Los Angeles" (Publishers Weekly), John Mack Faragher weaves a riveting narrative of murder and mayhem, featuring a cast of colorful characters vying for their piece of the city. These include a newspaper editor advocating for lynch laws to enact a crude manner of racial justice and a mob of Latinos preparing to ransack a county jail and murder a Texan outlaw. In this "groundbreaking" (True West) look at American history, Faragher shows us how the City of Angels went from a lawless outpost to the sprawling metropolis it is today. A riveting popular history of Los Angeles's bloody beginnings. Clean copy.

Philip of Spain by: Henry Kamen

Philip of Spain
by: Henry Kamen

Softcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, reprint, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 384 pages, illustrations. Philip II of Spain--ruler of the most extensive empire the world had ever known--has been viewed in a harsh and negative light since his death in 1598. Identified with repression, bigotry, and fanaticism by his enemies, he has been judged more by the political events of his reign than by his person. This book, published four hundred years after Philip's death, is the first full-scale biography of the king. Placing him within the social, cultural, religious, and regional context of his times, it presents a startling new picture of his character and reign. Drawing on Philip's unpublished correspondence and on many other archival sources, Henry Kamen reveals much about Philip the youth, the man, the husband, the father, the frequently troubled Christian, and the king. Kamen finds that Philip was a cosmopolitan prince whose extensive experience of northern Europe broadened his cultural imagination and tastes, whose staunchly conservative ideas were far from being illiberal and fanatical, whose religious attitudes led him to accept a practical coexistence with Protestants and Jews, and whose support for Las Casas and other defenders of the Indians in America helped determine government policy. Shedding completely new light on most aspects of Philip's private life and, in consequence, on his public actions, the book is the definitive portrayal of Philip II. Clean copy.

Revised History of Harlem (City Of New York): Its Origin And Early Annals - Volume 1
by: Riker, James

Softcover. Bowie MD, Heritage Books, reprint, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 425 pages. A facsimile reprint of the 1904 edition. Volume 1 ONLY. The present-day New York City neighborhood of Harlem was founded in the mid-17th century by Dutch Protestants, whose numbers included Huguenots (or their descendants) who had fled the counter-Reformation in France and the Walloon provinces of Artois, Cambresis, and Hainalt. Riker's Harlem is an extremely detailed historical and genealogical account of Harlem from its establishment by Kuyter and Stuyvesant between 1656 and 1660 to the end of the 17th century. Following several preliminary chapters on the Dutch and French context for the settlement of "New Haerlem," the author treats us to what seem like minute-by-minute accounts of its colonial development, including early efforts to settle the territory that became Harlem, the original land patents and their subsequent rearrangement, Indian wars, displacement of Dutch rule by the British in 1663 (and the brief reoccupation by Dutch forces in 1673), 17th-century village life, migrations to New Jersey, influx of Swedes, difficulties in assimilating English ways, and much, much more.
