The Great Wall of China: Photographs by Chen Changfen (Houston Museum of Fine Arts)
by: Anne Wilkes Tucker and Jonathan D. Spence

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale /Houston Museum of Fine Arts, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 168 pages. Chen Changfen (b. 1941) began to photograph the Great Wall twenty years before the Chinese government officially adopted it as the national symbol in 1984. This fascinating book presents a small fraction of his decades-long study of the monumental form and conveys the fertile range of themes and ideas that Chen has investigated, each informed by traditional Chinese art, history, and philosophy. Combining a unique blend of traditional and contemporary technical processes, Chen's richly evocative photographs at once celebrate the remarkable series of building campaigns that produced the Wall and memorialize the thousands of conscripted laborers whose lives were sacrificed to its construction. One of the most striking features of Chen's photographs is their unexpected variety of perspectives and moods, capturing the vicissitudes of weather, time, and human history that have acted upon it. By excluding the people, highways, factories, and modern buildings that encroach on and daily destroy sections of the Wall, however, Chen eliminates major aspects of the Wall's present reality from his pictures. In a thoughtful essay and interview with the artist, Anne Wilkes Tucker probes the meanings of such omissions and guides the reader through Chen's extraordinary images. The Great Wall of China is essential reading for photographers, historians, and travelers.

The Jewish Writer
by: Krementz, Jill

Hardcover. NY, Henry Holt & Co, 1s, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 150 pages. B&w portraits. Jill Krementz has made a career of photographing writers. The Jewish Writer features her portraits of 78 "people of the book," among them Saul Bellow, Hannah Arendt, Maurice Sendak, and David Mamet. Some of these portraits are contemplative; others are joyous. What distinguishes them is Krementz's ability to capture the essence of a moment that is at once exquisite and mundane, be it playwright Wendy Wasserstein rolling up her sleeves at her computer or an elfin Stanley Kunitz half-hiding in the blooms of his Provincetown garden. A mischievous Bruce Jay Friedman dashes around Southampton in a spiffy convertible; a bearded, bandana'd, and bespectacled Allen Ginsberg appears at the 1972 Democratic National Convention. (Though some of these photographs date from the early '70s, most are much more recent.) Each portrait is accompanied by a description of the author's life and work, and the relationship of each to Judaism, or, more accurately, Jewishness. The Jewish Writer is a spirited testament to the enormous and diverse contributions Jewish writers have made to our literary landscape.

The Last of the Hill Farms: Echoes of Vermont's Past
by: Richard W. Brown

Hardcover. Boston, David R. Godine, 2nd pr., 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 133 pages. In 1968 the photographer Richard Brown fulfilled a romantic childhood dream when he moved to the Northeast Kingdom, a remote corner of Vermont just barely entering the twentieth century. There he encountered a way of life that was fast disappearing, a land of sheep, cattle, work horses, wood-burning stoves, and small family-run farms far removed from the industrial Northeast. Determined to record it before it disappeared, he saw a pastoral vision where, "for the briefest interval, a window opened and the spirit of Vermont's past" granite hills cleared and formed, hard lives lived and lost, struggle and endurance, a harsh land made starkly beautiful by nature and man? "was made palpable." He saw the land and also a people whose "endless hours of backbreaking, monotonous work were spent with a quiet ferocity" and who believed their "age-old labors were a struggle waged against time itself " labors that might just hold modernity at bay." And Brown did record it, with an 8 x 10" large plate view camera. Not only the hauntingly beautiful landscape but also the people who stayed and worked the stubborn hills and "did so with great but fierce attachment." This is a great ode to an America that has passed before our eyes almost without comment or notice. It is a valiant, indeed a brilliant, effort to make the past tangible, to bring it back to life. Clean copy.

The Mississippi River in 1953: A Photographic Journey from the Headwaters to the Delta
by: Sharp, Charles Dee

Hardcover. Center for American Places, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 232 pages. The Mississippi River flows through American history and culture as a mythic waterway brimming with tragedy and hope, and awash in passionate ambitions and harsh realities. In 1953, a young Charles Dee Sharp traveled twice down the Mississippi (first by towboat and then by car along the renowned river road Highway 61) to make a documentary film of it, taking black-and-white photographs of the river, its communities, and its people. While Sharp's documentary never came to fruition, the striking images he captured survived as moving and evocative historical testaments to a lost era, now collected in his new book The Mississippi in 1953. These images create a vivid portrait of America's heartland a half century ago, and they are enriched with excerpts from Sharp's original trip journal, intriguing anecdotes from the people he encountered along his journey, and an engaging environmental history of the river by historian John O. Anfinson. The Mississippi in 1953 offers an original and poignant look at the living artery of the American landscape and how it molded the United States into the nation it is today.

The Whisper of a Million Leaves
by: HAVERICH, Beatrice.

Hardcover. Bologna IT, Damiani, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 100 pages. Original publisher's illustrated laminated boards. Issued without dust jacket. Copiously illustrated in color and black and white throughout. Beatrice Haverich believes that "trees embody life. They show us the seasons in a city landscape, and they provide us with wood, food and shelter. Their silence demands our respect." Her subjects, for whom she has the utmost sympathy, are survivors, stalwarts: for example, the Yew trees in Kingsley Vale, UK, are 4,000 years old. Among these portraits, she observes branches molded by the wind into lopsided hairstyles, and roots exposed by the rain. Some trees survive in cement planters or remain in the bounds of their sidewalk squares, but others reclaim their habitat, taking over old greenhouses and popping the glass panes one by one as they grow. Up from sand and boulders and cliffs and pavement, Haverich's trees are shaped by their landscape, but they persist in shaping it as well.

Tina Freeman: Lamentations
by: Tina Freeman

Hardcover. Univ of Louisiana at Lafayette, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 80 pages. Over the past eight years, Tina Freeman has photographed the Louisiana wetlands and Arctic and Antarctic glaciers. In Lamentations, Freeman pairs images from each place in a series of diptychs that address climate change, ecological balance, and the connectedness of things across time and space. Lamentations demonstrates how the rising waters along the coast of Louisiana are both visually and physically connected to the melting glaciers at the poles, despite the separation of vast distances. Freeman's work makes plain the crucial, threatening, and global dialogue between water in two physical states. Lamentations is published to accompany an exhibition of the same name, organized by and presented at the New Orleans Museum of Art, September 11, 2019 to February 22, 2020. Text was provided by Tina Freeman, Russell Lord, Brent Goehring, and Jady Surrounding along with a forward by Susan M. Taylor.

Un Paese: Portrait of an Italian Village
by: Zavattini, Cesare/Paul Strand

Hardcover. New York, Aperture, 1st US, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 104 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Very clean, unmarked copy with only minor edgewear. Published in Italian in 1955, and now available for the first time in the English language, Un Paese captures in photographs and in spoken testimony the essential experience of daily life in Luzzara. It presents a series of intense portraits, graceful landscapes, and images of everyday objects. Paul Strand's photographs are carefully distilled, deeply powerful; they contain the flavors and the rhythms of an entire culture crystallized in a single village. Zavattini successfully synthesizes text and image, aligning with the new cinematic trend of the day, a movement known as Italian neorealism. Their Luzzara is an ordinary village, neither overly picturesque nor greatly unusual, yet it is a town sustained by a grounded humanity and a profound love for the land by its people.

Unreasonable Behaviour: An Autobiography
by: McCullin with Lewis Chester, Don

Hardcover. NY, Knopf, 1st US, 1992, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 287 pages, b&w illustrations. From the construction of the Berlin Wall through every major conflict of his adult lifetime up to the Syrian Civil War, photographer Don McCullin has left a trail of iconic images. Unreasonable Behavior traces the life and career of one of the top photojournalists of the twentieth century and beyond. Born in London in 1935, McCullin worked as a photographer's assistant in the RAF during the Suez Crisis. His early association with a North London gang led to the first publication of his pictures. As an overseas correspondent for the Sunday Times Magazine beginning in 1966, McCullin soon became a new kind of hero, taking a generation of readers beyond the insularity of post-war domestic life through the lens of his Nikon camera. He captured the realities of war in Biafra, the Congo, Vietnam, Cambodia, and the human tragedy of famine and cholera on the Bangladesh border and later, the AIDs epidemic in Sub-Saharan Africa. McCullin now spends his days in a Somerset village, where he photographs the landscape and arranges still-lifes. Harrowing and poignant, Unreasonable Behavior is an extraordinary account of a witness who triumphed over the memories that could have destroyed him.

Victor Regnault and the Advance of Photography: The Art of Avoiding Errors
by: Dahlberg, Laurie

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. This lavishly illustrated book establishes the towering influence of the scientist Victor Regnault (1810-1878) in the earliest decades of photography, a period of experimentation ripe with artistic, commercial, and scientific possibility. Regnault has a double significance to the early history of photography, as the first leader of the Societe Francaise de Photographie (S.F.P.) and as the maker of more than two hundred calotype (paper negative) portraits and landscapes. His photographic and scientific careers intersected a third field with his appointment in 1852 as director of the Sevres porcelain works. Readers are treated to Regnault's own beguiling pastoral, garden, and forest scenes; striking portraits of the scientists and artists in his circle of friends; quirky images of acoustic experiments; and an insider's view of the Sevres porcelain works. Regnault's richly varied photographs also encompass perhaps the most extensive group of family portraits in early photography, and his romanticized landscapes reflect a moment when the rural outskirts of Paris were being aggressively suburbanized and industrialized.

Viewing Olmsted: Photographs by Robert Burley, Lee Friedlander, and Geoffrey James
by: Lambert, Phyllis

Softcover. Cambridge MA, The MIT Press, 1st, 1997, Book: N, Softcover, 119 pages. Ultimately, Viewing Olmsted is a savvy and thought-provoking, yet diminutive picture book. The collaboration of three brilliant photographers under the sponsorship of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, it guides the reader down three highly personal, present day tours of legendary parks designed by Olmsted, the patron saint of American landscape architecture. Happily, though, its readers are left to intellectually fend for themselves as to meanings or implications of Frederick Olmsted's work, genius, and lasting influence as the man who designed such famous spaces as Central Park. Academics and artists will appreciate the fresh visual perspectives offered on the man's legacy, the sometimes soothing, sometimes haunting nature-by-design retreats for the urban soul. Those with more than a passing interest in the ways in which man interacts with his `natural' surroundings will appreciate vistas evocative of place rather than time. To the authors' credit, the book raises more questions than it answers, and is of a scale to fit neatly into a travel case. Far from definitive, the book is, nevertheless, a must have for architects, landscape architects, photographers, and Olmsted aficionados.
