Honored Guest: Stories
by: Williams, Joy

Hardcover. NY, Knopf, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. These twelve stories further Joy Williamss utterly singular achievement, described by the Washington Post as poetic, disturbing, yet very funny. Her landscapes reach from Maine and Nantucket to the Southwest and into Mexico and Guatemala, while the events cover a range of human travail, from children confronting the death of a parent to parents instead burying their own young, and the various ways-comic, tragic, unnerving-we seek to accommodate diminishment and loss.

Images of Rail: Boston & Maine in the 20th Century
by: Bruce D. Heald

Softcover. Charleston SC, Arcadia, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 128 pages, b&w illustrations. As the twentieth century dawned, the Boston & Maine Railroad Company controlled virtually all of the rail lines in New Hampshire, as well as much of the service in Maine and Massachusetts. Ultimately, the company operated more than 2,000 stations in northern New England. The train was the most important mode of travel, and the stations were the center of the community. Boston & Maine in the 20th Century continues the first pictorial history of the railroad company, entitled Boston & Maine in the 19th Century. With more than 200 rare images and historical narrative, the book details the trains and their destinations: the terminals, stations, depots, and whistle stops to which they sped. Times changed, and the railroad was passed by; however, its legacy lives on. Clean copy.

King Philip's War : The History and Legacy of America's Forgotten Conflict
by: Eric B. Schultz, Michael J. Tougias

Hardcover. Woodstock VT, Countryman Press, 4th pr., 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, price-clipped dust jacket, 416 pages, b&w illustrations. Now largely forgotten, the massacres of 1675 to 1676, known as King Philip's War, ended the harmonious relations that had existed between native Americans and the colonists since their arrival at Plymouth Rock in 1620. Tensions had been rising as the number of settlers grew, and the pillaging of an outlying farm by affronted young braves escalated into open hostilities. Pitched battles were fought from Rhode Island to Maine. Hundreds of English died as farmers fled and cowered behind stockades or in the few port towns. Thousands of natives were slaughtered and the rest dispersed or sold into slavery in the West Indies. The savagery resulted in the clearing of the native populations from southern New England and the unopposed expansion of the New England colonies. It also became the brutal model on which the United States came to deal with its native peoples. King Philip's War tells the story with such close attention to detail that each ambush, each burned-out farm, becomes a vivid image. The authors make abundant use of maps and photographs of old sites to enable the reader to follow the course of the war: the book forms an exhaustive guide for the armchair historian or anyone wishing to visit the monuments and battlefields today. Clean copy.

Multitude of Sins, A
by: Ford, Richard

Hardcover. New York, Knopf, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 286 pages. Light edge wear to dust jacket. Else very good. One of the most celebrated and unflinching chroniclers of modern life now explores, in this masterful collection of short stories, the grand theme of intimacy, love, and their failures. With remarkable insight and candor, Richard Ford examines liaisons in and out and to the sides of marriage. An illicit visit to the Grand Canyon reveals a vastness even more profound. A couple weekending in Maine try to recapture the ardor that has disappeared from their life together. And on a spring evening, a young wife tells her husband of her affair with the host of the dinner party they're about to join. The rigorous intensity Ford brings to these vivid, unforgettable dramas marks this as his most powerfully arresting book to date-confirming the judgment of the New York Times Book Review that "nobody now writing looks more like an American classic."

Nature and Culture: The Art of Joel Babb
by: Little, Carl

Hardcover. Hanover NH, UPNE, 1st, 2013, Book: Near Fine, Dust Jacket: Near Fine, Hardcover, 132 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. In an age of specialization it is amazing to find an artist who has mastered the complexities of painting both the urban landscape and the Maine wilderness. Joel Babb achieves all this with absolute clarity, attention to detail, and meticulous realism. His vision is very much of our time a contemporary dialogue between nature and culture. This first-ever overview of Joel Babb s work offers a full complement of his major paintings created over the past several decades and a compelling account of Babb s evolution as an artist by art critic Carl Little.
