by: Lilly, Robert & Lois

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse Books, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, still in publisher's shrink wrap. Jean Patchett was both model and muse, a famous face from New York's vibrant midcentury popular culture and the most successful high-fashion model of her time. "A young American goddess in Paris couture," was Irving Penn's epitaph for the model he photographed for a classic series in Lima, Peru where, pushed past their limits, Patchett and Penn created passionate art with a possible passionate relationship as well. Penn would go on to create stunning images of Patchett forVogueand later, for a series of nudes he called "the major artistic experience of my life." Letters from Patchett to her family show a young woman in love with her life and eager to share the thrills and struggles of her career. Quotes from photographers Cecil Beaton, John Rawlings, William Helburn, Jerry Schatzberg, and Francesco Scavullo reflect their admiration for her technical skills as a model as well as her unique beauty. Athlete/Warrior
by: Jonathan Anderson / Edwin Low

Hardcover. NY/London, Merrell Publishers, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, lightly worn dust jacket, 191 pages. In Athlete/Warrior, photographers Anderson & Low present photographs of young men and women who are training for both the sports field and the battlefield while studying at America's three famed armed forces academies: the US Military Academy, West Point, in New York State, the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, and the US Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Arresting juxtapositions of cadets in their military dress - from formal to fatigues - and in the uniforms of their chosen sports, including swimming, boxing, football, gymnastics, and basketball, among others, reveal subtle similarities and differences between the roles assumed by such disciplined and dedicated individuals. The resonant images in Athlete/Warrior go beyond the military and sporting uniforms to highlight both the humanity of the individuals portrayed and the noble aspirations that they embody. Clean copy. Baltimore's Alley Houses: Homes for Working People Since the 1780s
by: Hayward, Mary Ellen

Hardcover. Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University Press, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 307 pages with index. Having studied over 3,000 surviving alley houses in Baltimore through extensive land records and census research, Mary Ellen Hayward systematically reconstructs the lives, households, and neighborhoods that once thrived on the city's narrowest streets. In the past, these neighborhoods were sometimes referred to as "dilapidated," "blighted," or "poverty stricken." In Baltimore's Alley Houses, Hayward reveals the rich cultural and ethnic traditions that formed the African-American and immigrant Irish, German, Bohemian, and Polish communities that made their homes on the city's alley streets. Featuring more than one hundred historic images, Baltimore's Alley Houses documents the changing architectural styles of low-income housing over two centuries and reveals the complex lives of its residents. Genealogical Data from Colonial New York Newspapers: A Consolidation of Articles from The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record
by: Kenneth Scott (Compiler)

Softcover. Baltimore, Clearfield, reprint, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, light gray wrappers, 278 pages. This volume consists of abstracts of genealogical data from four of New York's earliest newspapers--the New-York Gazette (1726-1744) and the New-York Weekly Journal (1733-1751), the two earliest city papers, and the New-York Mercury and the Weekly Mercury (1752-1783). These newspapers were originally produced as weeklies and usually consisted of four pages, with occasional supplementary issues. Their subject matter encompassed essays, treatises, parliamentary proceedings, governors' messages, European and West Indian news, shipping news, incidents culled from other newspapers, and many advertisements. In this volume of abstracts may be found items yielding information concerning marriage, birth, death, age, status, place of residence, and place of origin, covering, in all, the years 1726 through most of 1783. Treatment is not confined to New York, for among individuals mentioned are those from all the other colonies, especially New Jersey (which had no newspaper in the colonial period), New England, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.

Men, Women & Manners in Colonial Times (2 Volumes)
by: Sydney Geo Fisher

Softcover. Bowie MD, Heritage Books, reprint, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Two softcover volumes 391 & 392 pages. Volumes 1 and 2 complete, a facsimile reprint of the 1897 edition by Lippincott. This two-volume series takes the reader on a journey through the colonies of Virginia, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Carolina, and Georgia. The charm of the journey is in its variety, as the reader passes through communities of such striking individuality that they assume the character of different nations. Each colony has a set of opinions and laws peculiar to itself, and it is not uncommon to find the laws of one in contradiction with the laws of another. This text explores the settlement and history of each colony prior to the American Revolution. Topics include development of the colonies' government, laws, religion, schools, boundaries, industries, layout of the cities, fashions, homes, social activities, slavery, architecture, interaction with the Indians, and customs. At least one prominent person from each colony is discussed, amongst them, William Penn of Pennsylvania, John Smith of Virginia, George Calvert of Maryland, and General Oglethorpe of Georgia. Molly Bannaky
by: McGill, Alice

Boston, Houghton Mifflin, 2nd pr., 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket.Color illustrations by Chris K. Soentpiet. On a cold gray morning in 1683, Molly Walsh sat on a stool tugging at the udder of an obstinate cow. When she spilled the milk, she was brought before the court for stealing. Because she could read, Molly escaped the typicalpunishment of death on the gallows. At the age of seventeen, the English dairymaid was exiled from her country and sentenced to work as an indentured servant in British Colonial America. Molly worked for a planter in Maryland for seven long years. Then she was given an ox hitched to a cart, some supplies-and her freedom. That a lone woman should stake land was unheard of. That she would marry an African slave was even more so. Yet Molly prospered, and with her husband Bannaky, she turned a one-room cabin in the wilderness into a thriving one hundred-acre farm.

Old Ocean City: The Journal and Photographs of Robert Craighead Walker, 1904-1916
by: C. John Sullivan

Hardcover. Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 120 pages. "Vacationers of today," writes C. John Sullivan, "can only dream of what this seaside resort was like for those who visited in the early 1900s." With Old Ocean City, Sullivan brings back those long-ago summers through the words and photographs of the Walker family of Washington, D.C. Avid photographers as well as sports enthusiasts, the Walkers preserved their Ocean City summers in hundreds of snapshots. And the Walkers' son, Robert, kept a detailed record of those days in a small leather-bound journal, titled My Vacation, in which he wrote almost daily from 1912 to 1916. In Old Ocean City, Sullivan mixes his own commentary and explanatory captions with excerpts from Robert Walker's journal and more than one hundred family photographs (discovered in 1994, Sullivan notes, in a sweltering attic in Berlin, Maryland). Views of handsome beach architecture and grass-covered dunes suggest an Ocean City almost unimaginable today. Rare photographs and accounts of shorebird hunting (banned in 1918 to protect sandpipers, plover, herons, and other species) are an arresting contrast to more familiar scenes of boating, fishing, and beachcombing. We see the Walker children growing up-and Ocean City growing up around them. The result is a surprising look at a place "far different than our memories would recall." Sullivan includes a time line of Ocean City history and Walker family visits, starting with the formation of the Atlantic Hotel Company in 1868 (the company's stockholders chose the name Ocean City at their 1875 meeting in Salisbury) and ending with the Walkers' sale of their beloved cottage in 1950.

Perfect Intimacy
by: Lili Almog

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse Books, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 127 pages. Lili Almog's color photos taken at three Carmelite monasteries (of nuns) are revealing of their faith.. The sisters showing their distinctive profession crucifixes (normally worn hidden under their scapulars, and pinned to their beds when they go to sleep) are revealing their personal symbols of "perfect intimacy." And the statues and/or holy cards of our holy mother St. Teresa, our holy father St. John of the Cross, St. Therese, and St. Joseph make Carmelites feel right at home. The monasteries are also significant: they are on Mt. Carmel (Haifa) and in Bethlehem--founded by Sister Miriam, "the little Arab"; and in Port Tobacco, Maryland, whose community is the oldest and first Discalced Carmelite convent founded in the US. The spartan surroundings emphasize the importance of the nuns' relationship with God. The photos of the sisters revealing their profession crucifixes, which they wear near their hearts and pin to their beds when going to sleep, I found especially moving. Almog's photos are neither stilted nor rigid, but reminiscent of the photos that St. Therese's sister Celine took of her! The quotations from Blessed Teresa of the Andes are very apt comments on the photos.
