County Courts of Medieval England, 1150-1350, The
by: Palmer, Robert C.

Hardcover. Princeton, NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st US, 1982, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover. 360 pages. Dust jacket with edgewear, sun-fading. Clean, tight copy. The first monograph on English medieval county courts, this book provides a major revision of traditional conceptions of the character of these courts and the organization of English society from the twelfth to the fourteenth century. THe county courts have been considered courts of custom dominated by local knights unskilled in the law. By analyzing county peronnel and their role of the courts, Robert C. Palmer shows that these courts were, on the contrary, clearly professional and controlled by the magnates through their lawyers. Nevertheless, as the author demonstrates by his study of the process of jurisdictional change, the county courts were increasingly relegated to lesser roles by changes meant to assure justice to county litigants, while the king's court became the normal court of original jurisdiction for most important cases.

De Doctrina Christiana: A Classic of Western Culture
by: N/A

Hardcover. University of Notre Dame Press, 1st, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, maroon cloth stamped in gilt and silver, 271 pages. This volume is the result of an international conference held at the University of Notre Dame in 1991 in which leading scholars, classicists, medievalists, theologians, philologists, rhetoricians, literary critics, and philosophers-gathered to focus on one of the most remarkable and influential books of late antiquity, Augustine's De doctrina christiana. Contributors to this volume place the historical setting of De doctrina christiana within the context of contemporary scholarship and explore in detail its theological meaning and impact on western culture and Christian education. The essays cover the entire field of current Augustinian studies starting with the historic setting of late antiquity in which De doctrina christiana was written. They then examine the work itself, its literary structure and interpretive and theological significance, how it was received by later patristic writers, and how it has been used as an authoritative source in contemporary times. An extensive bibliography facilitates further study.

Theodate?'s masterpiece is the unusual medieval campus of Avon Old Farms School, where she served as founder and pioneered a progressive curriculum far ahead of its time. The school continues to flourish today and receives ongoing acclaim as an architectural tour de force and as an innovative educational institution. According to writer and critic Brendan Gill, Theodate Pope Riddle was one of the ten most distinguished American women of the 20th century. Degas: The Nudes
by: Richard Thomson

Hardcover. NY, Thames and Hudson, 1st, 1988, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 240 pages. 226 illustrations, 50 in color, "Nudes comprised more than 20 percent of Degas' subject matter. His typical unclothed female is a slightly plump middle-class lady at her bath. Yet the French artist explored nudity in many guises. The symbolic figures of his Medieval War Scene and David and Goliath suggest vulnerable, naked humanity. Then there are the prostitutes of his brothel pictures, salaciously or humorously observed. There are women in meditative poses, asleep, dancing and, infrequently, making love to other women. There is a bit of the voyeur in Degas' images, but as British art historian Thomson shows, the painter transcended his own conventional categories of 'nice' bourgeois women and 'fallen' lower-class whores. His explorations of the nude in charcoal, pastel, oil and sculpture exude empathy, even nobility." Clean copy.

Dresden: Tuesday, February 13, 1945
by: Frederick Taylor

Hardcover. NY, HarperCollins, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 518 pages with index. B&w illustrations. The allied bombing of Dresden created a massive fire that swept the city center, killing thousands of people and destroying its medieval heart. Debate began almost immediately: Was the destruction of this seemingly civilian city necessary militarily, or was it, some asked, equivalent to a war crime? Not just another in an endless parade of books on Dresden, Taylor's account may go a long way toward putting such questions to rest. It opens with the start, by British bombers, of the nighttime attack, and immediately turns to the past, meandering through several centuries of Dresden history, from its founding in the Middle Ages to the 20th century and the rise of the Nazis. Taylor, translator of The Goebbels Diaries, also covers the history of aerial bombardment and its international laws; gives glimpses of life under the Nazi regime; details the Allied bombing campaign against Germany; and, most excitingly, puts forth new information concerning Dresden's part in the German war effort, which turns out to be much greater than postwar information generally portrays. Famous Women (The I Tatti Renaissance Library, 1)
by: Giovanni Boccaccio /Virginia Brown [Translator]

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, Harvard University Press, 2nd pr., 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a dust jacket with fading to spin, 530 pages. After the composition of the Decameron, and under the influence of Petrarch's humanism, Giovanni Boccaccio(1313-1375) devoted the last decades of his life to compiling encyclopedic works in Latin. Among them is Famous Women, the first collection of biographies in Western literature devoted exclusively to women. The 106 women whose life stories make up this volume range from the exemplary to the notorious, from historical and mythological figures to Renaissance contemporaries. In the hands of a master storyteller, these brief biographies afford a fascinating glimpse of a moment in history when medieval attitudes toward women were beginning to give way to more modern views of their potential. Famous Women, which Boccaccio continued to revise and expand until the end of his life, became one of the most popular works in the last age of the manuscript book, and had a signal influence on many literary works, including Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and Castiglione's Courtier. This edition presents the first English translation based on the autograph manuscript of the Latin. Clean copy.

Feudal Society by: Marc Bloch

Feudal Society
by: Marc Bloch

Hardcover. London, Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1961, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine, 498 pages, b&w illustrations. I: The Growth of Ties of Independence. II: Social Classes and Political Organization. Translated from the French by L. A. Manyon. Foreword by M. M. Postan. In this outstanding and magisterial work, which has introduced generations of readers to the feudal period, Marc Bloch treats feudalism as living, breathing force in Western Europe from the ninth to the thirteenth century. Bloch said that his goal in writing Feudal Society was to go beyond the technical study a medievalist would typically write and 'dismantle a social structure.' For Bloch, history is a process of constant evolution and he brilliantly describes the slow process by which feudal societies turned into what would become nation states. A tour de force of historical writing, Feudal Society is essential reading for anyone interested in both Western Europe's past and present. Mild soil to covers otherwise a clean, tight copy.
