In a clear, straightforward style, Katz describes the settlement of the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys (covering Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri) by African Americans seeking freedom, including biographical sketches of men and women who formed churches, started schools, or were politically active in their region. Some of these settlers were fugitive slaves; several set up stations on the Underground Railroad with the aid of the Quakers; others were farmers, poets, and soldiers. In several states, they helped form black regiments in the Civil War. Chronologically arranged, the book introduces many lesser-known personages not found in most collective biographies and places them in a broader context of U.S. history as a whole.

The book also compares Anson to other captain-managers of his day, and Chicago to contemporaneous teams with divided management: those with a combination of captains and bench managers.

Writing about ordinary Americans and everyday life, he enjoyed the same kind of success that Robert Burns had in Scotland. "Betsy and I Are Out," a poem about divorce, was picked up by a national newspaper and brought him widespread recognition, that was cemented by "Over The Hill To the Poorhouse," which brought attention to the shabby treatment provided to the country's old and poor. "City Legends" is Carleton's third collection of "city" related poetry and 17th collection overall. Clean, bright copy.

Clean, tight copy. This first book from Chicago author Chris Ware is a pleasantly-decorated view at a lonely and emotionally-impaired "everyman" (Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth), who is provided, at age 36, the opportunity to meet his father for the first time. An improvisatory romance which gingerly deports itself between 1890's Chicago and 1980's small town Michigan, the reader is helped along by thousands of colored illustrations and diagrams, which, when read rapidly in sequence, provide a convincing illusion of life and movement. The bulk of the work is supported by fold-out instructions, an index, paper cut-outs, and a brief apology, all of which concrete to form a rich portrait of a man stunted by a paralyzing fear of being disliked.
