Louisa Costello (1799-1870), was an accomplished Anglo-Irish artist and prolific poet and author. She was also a fine miniature painter, and her illustrations show her exquisite sensibility. 4 beautifully hand-colored lithograph plates by the author. Not all copies contain these plates.

A narrative sequence, it is an autobiographical quest concerned with "the growth of a poet's mind.'" There are also many poems with richly meditative lyrics and the final section is in the voice of the legendary Sweeney, a king of Ulster. A marvelous group of poems, this was Heaney's sixth major collection and many believe it ranks among his best. Previous owner's name, date on the front fly leaf, otherwise clean.
