Annapuma South Face
by: Chris Bonington

Hardcover. NY, McGraw-Hill, 1st, 1971, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, price-clipped dust jacket, 334 pages, color photos, fold-out plate in rear. In 1970, Chris Bonington and his now-legendary team of mountaineers were the first climbers to tackle a big wall at extreme altitude. Their target was the south face of Nepal's Annapurna: 12,000 feet of steep rock and ice leading to a 26, 454-ft. summit. As serious armchair climbers will tell you, Annapurna South Face is better than all but a handful of equally gripping classics. One could also argue that all that has happened in the big mountains in the past 30 years has come out of this expedition and out of this book. Bonington and his team, most of whom subsequently died in the mountains, represented a kind of "greatest generation" of modern mountaineers. They pioneered a new, bolder approach to high altitude climbing, and this book is about how they hit the big time. Clean copy.

Athlete/Warrior
by: Jonathan Anderson / Edwin Low

Hardcover. NY/London, Merrell Publishers, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, lightly worn dust jacket, 191 pages. In Athlete/Warrior, photographers Anderson & Low present photographs of young men and women who are training for both the sports field and the battlefield while studying at America's three famed armed forces academies: the US Military Academy, West Point, in New York State, the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, and the US Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Arresting juxtapositions of cadets in their military dress - from formal to fatigues - and in the uniforms of their chosen sports, including swimming, boxing, football, gymnastics, and basketball, among others, reveal subtle similarities and differences between the roles assumed by such disciplined and dedicated individuals. The resonant images in Athlete/Warrior go beyond the military and sporting uniforms to highlight both the humanity of the individuals portrayed and the noble aspirations that they embody. Clean copy. Babe: The Life and Legend of Babe Didrikson Zaharias
by: Cayleff, Susan E.

Hardcover. Urbana IL, University of Illinois Press, 2nd pr., 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 327 pages, b&w photos. An extraordinarily gifted athlete, Babe Didrikson Zaharias starred in track and field and won three Olympic medals in 1932. She picked up golf late yet quickly dominated the women's sport. She also competed in baseball, bowling, basketball, and tennis. Interviews with members of Babe's family, peers, and others inform Susan E. Cayleff's story of the athlete and the difficulties she faced as a woman trying to be her own person. The American public was smitten with Babe's wit, frankness, and "unladylike" bravado. But members of the press insinuated that her femininity, even her femaleness, were suspect. Cayleff looks at how Babe used her androgyny and athleticism to promote herself before crafting a more marketable female persona for golf. She also explores Babe's role as a cofounder of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA); her marriage to George Zaharias and their partnership in shaping her career; her romantic relationship with fellow golfer Betty Dodd; and her courageous public fight against cancer. Baseball and Men's Lives: The True Confessions of a Skinny-Marink
by: Robert Mayer

Softcover. NY, Delta/Dell, 1st, 1994, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 275 pages. In his look at the role baseball plays in the lives of American men, the author recounts his own role as shortstop and discusses Bobby Thompson's home run, the 1969 Mets, and other events. By making baseball the focal point of his evocative memoir, the fifty-something Mayer can lay claim to spiritual kinship with all American males who ever aspired to major-league stardom and settled for the sidelines. Looking back on the pre-TV days when he roamed N.Y.C.'s rough diamonds as a scrawny shortstop, the author recalls the pleasures and pains of rooting for the Brooklyn Dodgers, an aberrant choice for a Bronx- born lad whose immigrant parents lived within walking distance of Yankee Stadium. Mayer's loyalty to the team did not survive the franchise's flight to Los Angeles; as a young newspaperman, however, he found it possible to transfer his allegiance to the Mets. Clean copy.
