Ernest Lehman: The Sweet Smell of Successby: Jon Krampner

Ernest Lehman: The Sweet Smell of Success
by: Jon Krampner

Hardcover. Lexington KY, University Press of Kentucky, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. A Hollywood screenwriting and movie-making icon, Ernest Lehman penned some of the most memorable scenes to ever grace the silver screen. Hailed by Vanity Fair as "perhaps the greatest screenwriter in history," Lehman's work on films such as North by Northwest, The King and I, Sabrina, West Side Story, and The Sound of Music helped define a generation of movie making. But while his talent took center stage, the public knew little of Lehman himself, a native of Manhattan's Upper West Side and the Five Towns of Long Island devoted to his wife of 50 years. His relentless perfectionism, hypochondria and all-night writing sessions fueled by tequila and grilled cheese sandwiches were some of the quirks that made Lehman a legend in the Hollywood community.

Fabric of Enchantment: Batik from the North Coast of Javaby: Heringa Rens & Harmen C. Veldhuisen

Fabric of Enchantment: Batik from the North Coast of Java
by: Heringa Rens & Harmen C. Veldhuisen

Hardcover. Weatherhill, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 239 pages. 266 illustrations including 163 in full color. The batik designs of Java's North Coast are particularly varied in both design and color. With their fanciful, highly imaginative motifs and luminous tints, they are more immediately appealing than the sombre blue and brown batik of Central Java. It was a chance encounter in a Hong Kong antique shop that inspired photojournalist Inger McCabe Elliot to devote over three decades to assembling one of the world's finest collections, which she presented to the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art in 1991. This volume, published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Museum, celebrates Elliott's gift and presents her collection. Essays by authorities on the subject examine the 82 featured batik textiles from historical, cultural and aesthetic perspectives. The essays are followed by biographies of some of the most distinguished batik designers and entrepreneurs and a descriptive catalogue of the batiks. Appendices document design formats and motifs, as well as the complete production process of North Coast batiks. Clean copy,

Fort Huachuca
by: Price, Ethel Jackson

Softcover. Charleston, SC, Arcadia Publishing, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 128 pages, b&w photos throughout. At the foot of the Huachuca Mountains, the U.S. Army founded one of the most crucial military posts for American expansion into the southwest frontier. Soldiers had been stationed in the region for decades, but in 1877 Fort Huachuca became the symbolic cornerstone of America's western domain. The Native American word huachuca, meaning "place of thunder," described the sporadic but marvelous electrical storms in the area, but the skies would not be the only thing booming. During the tumultuous campaigns to resolve American and Indian disputes, the U.S. infantry and famed Buffalo Soldiers faced off with Geronimo and his Apache nation in both tense negotiations and bitter combat. As time marched on, the fort developed into a permanent installation with barracks, modern training grounds, and other facilities to accommodate troop rotations and eventually became the innovative Center for Military Intelligence. As Motion Picture Control Officer of the US Military Government he undertook , from 1946-49, the difficult task of rebuilding West Germany's film industry from the ashes of the Second World War. From Moral Theology to Moral Philosophy: Cicero and Visions of Humanity from Locke to Hume by: Stuart-Buttle, Tim

From Moral Theology to Moral Philosophy: Cicero and Visions of Humanity from Locke to Hume
by: Stuart-Buttle, Tim

Hardcover. UK, Oxford University Press, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 277 pages. The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries represent a period of remarkable intellectual vitality in British philosophy, as figures such as Hobbes, Locke, Hume, and Smith attempted to explain the origins and sustaining mechanisms of civil society. Their insights continue to inform how political and moral theorists think about the world in which we live. From Moral Theology to Moral Philosophy reconstructs a debate which preoccupied contemporaries but which seems arcane to us today. It concerned the relationship between reason and revelation as the two sources of mankind's knowledge, particularly in the ethical realm: to what extent, they asked, could reason alone discover the content and obligatory character of morality? This was held to be a historical, rather than a merely theoretical question: had the philosophers of pre-Christian antiquity, ignorant of Christ, been able satisfactorily to explain the moral universe? What role had natural theology played in their ethical theories - and was it consistent with the teachings delivered by revelation? Much recent scholarship has drawn attention to the early-modern interest in two late Hellenistic philosophical traditions - Stoicism and Epicureanism. Yet in the English context, three figures above all - John Locke, Conyers Middleton, and David Hume - quite deliberately and explicitly identified their approaches with Cicero as the representative of an alternative philosophical tradition, critical of both the Stoic and the Epicurean: academic scepticism. All argued that Cicero provided a means of addressing what they considered to be the most pressing question facing contemporary philosophy: the relationship between moral philosophy and moral theology. From Rebellion to Revolution. Afro-American Slave Revolts in the Making of the Modern Worldby: Genovese, Eugene D.

From Rebellion to Revolution. Afro-American Slave Revolts in the Making of the Modern World
by: Genovese, Eugene D.

Hardcover. Baton Rouge, Louisiana State University , 1st, 1979, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 173 pages. This work is a brief look at worldwide slave revolts in the 17th through 19th centuries, emphasizing their interrelations with European power struggles, which gave rebels hope of finding weak spots in the defenses of the slave powers. The French Revolution also had an influence on slave revolts, but the canny European powers used indigenous peoples to suppress slave revolts (e.g., native Americans) and took advantage of African ethnic divisions as well. American slaves stood little chance of revolt and were under constant surveillance from Southerners, who coward in fear after the successful rebellions in the Caribbean, particularly in Hispaniola, and after Nat Turner and John Brown's efforts. Genovese also brings up religion's double-edged sword: one side used to pacify slaves and the other side to inspire them to break their chains. In short, this scholarly treatise is thought-provoking as well as informative and ends with an inspirational quote from one of Frederick Douglass's lectures. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise a clean copy.

Gardening with Stone: Using Stone Features to Add Mystery, Magic, and Meaning to Your Gardenby: Jan Kowalczewski Whitner

Gardening with Stone: Using Stone Features to Add Mystery, Magic, and Meaning to Your Garden
by: Jan Kowalczewski Whitner

Hardcover. NY, Macmillan, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 212 pages. Stone is an important, though often overlooked, element of creating the perfect garden. Stone can combine with plants and water in an infinite array to bring us landscapes that range from the serene and contemplative to the boisterous and exuberant. While much has been written about plants and water in the garden, only scant attention has been paid to stone. Jan Kowalczewski Whitner finds this an injustice. "Stone is eloquent, and it speaks in many voices," says Whitner. "Some of our most imaginative gardeners have used stone to transform ordinary plots of land into the cumulatively rich and evocative landscapes we all hope to create." With photographer Linda Quartman Younker, Whitner travels across America, exploring some of the most imaginative uses of stone in gardens ranging from orderly formal gardens to relaxed and cozy cottage plots. A good deal of the book is devoted to specific types of stones and stonework, such as using gravel or working with outcrops, with accompanying lists of plants that work well with each. Clean copy.

Granite and Cedar: The People and the Land of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom (SIGNED COPY)
by: Miller/Howard Frank Mosher, John M.

Hardcover. Thistle Hill Publications & Vermont Folklife Center, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 108 pages, 68 b&w photographs. SIGNED BY BOTH MOSHER AND MILLER on the half-title page. Granite and Cedar represents an unusual collaboration between a documentary photographer and a writer of fiction to produce a haunting portrait of the people and the land of Vermont's most rural area, often referred to as the "Northeast Kingdom." Veteran photographer JOHN M. MILLER uses his brilliant collection of elegiac, but unsentimental, images dating from the 1970s to evoke the disappearing folkways, the rugged people, and the desolate and abandoned landscape of his native corner of the Green Mountain State. Miller's austere, black-and-white photos richly detail the erosion and the breakup of the small farms of the region and of the families who worked those farms. While they emphasize the stark beauty of the land, they also pay homage to the innate dignity and fierce pride of the people who live in such hardscrabble circumstances.

Hakan Ludwigson: Balls and Bulldust
by: Hakan Ludwigson

Hardcover. Steidl , 1st, 2015, Hardcover, terra-cotta cloth with pastedown photo on front cover. 264 pages, 170 color illustrations. Balls and Bulldust is a rich collection of images that explores life and work among the cattlemen in the Northern Territory in Australia. It is not another cowboy story, rather one about men and women working very hard, and seeking some kind of solitude and sense of space in the midst of harsh conditions. For some, life in Australia's outback is a life-long routine. The young are attracted by its romanticism, which is-more often than not-shattered by reality's hardships. The red dust covering this vast scrubby landscape and filling the air is prevalent in Ludwigson's images. Days can be blistering hot and temperatures at nights may sometimes fall below zero. People sleep on "swags" on the ground for weeks. The food is drab and the men are in their saddles twelve hours a day mustering herds of cattle, branding and castrating young bulls. Hakan Ludwigson spent three months with the cattlemen of the Australian outback early in his career, and returned to his native Sweden with a body of work that became Balls and Bulldust. Hitchcock's British Films
by: Yacowar, Maurice

Softcover. Detroit, Wayne State University, reprint, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 280 pages. Originally published in 1977 and long out of print, Maurice Yacowar's Hitchcock's British Films was the first volume devoted solely to the twenty-three films directed by Alfred Hitchcock in his native England before he came to the United States. As such, it was the first book to challenge the assumption that Hitchcock's 'mature' period in Hollywood, from the late 1940s to the early 1960s, represented the director's best work. In this traditional auteurist examination of Hitchcock's early work, author Maurice Yacowar considers Hitchcock's British films in chronological order, reads the composition of individual shots and scenes in each, and pays special attention to the films' verbal effects.Yacowar's readings remain compelling more than thirty years after they were written,

Holland on Paper: In the Age of Art Nouveauby: Clifford Ackley

Holland on Paper: In the Age of Art Nouveau
by: Clifford Ackley

Hardcover. Boston, MFA Publications, Museum of Fine Arts, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 256 pages, profusely illustrated. From the 1890s through the turn of the century, there was a flourishing of new, imaginative art and craft throughout Europe that we now know as Art Nouveau. The Netherlands experienced an inventive variant of this art and design phenomenon, but until now it has been largely overshadowed by its counterparts in other countries, especially France. This richly illustrated book is the first in English to celebrate the Dutch contribution to Art Nouveau through a tour of more than 100 works on paper--posters, decorative calendars and illustrated books, as well as prints and drawings. These innovative works of graphic design reveal the progressive Dutch artists' conscious reaction against the past, their inspiration in natural forms and exotic cultures, and their embrace of the principle that art should transform everyday life. They also show how the New Art--Nieuwe Kunst in Dutch--coexisted and sometimes intertwined in the Netherlands with other artistic strands, including persistent realist trends, Symbolism and the emergence of modernism. Included here are early drawings by well-known artists Vincent van Gogh and Bart van der Leck, as well as new discoveries from Jan Toorop, Theo Nieuwenhuis, Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, Theo Hoytema, G. W. Dijsselhof and C. A. Lion Cachet. This beautifully illustrated book is the first in English to celebrate the Dutch contribution to Art Nouveau through a tour of over one hundred posters, decorative calendars, and illustrated books, as well as prints and drawings. With text by Clifford S. Ackley, one of the leading specialists on Dutch prints and drawings, Holland on Paper in the Age of Art Nouveau provides a fascinating and visually rewarding introduction to a rich and creative artistic era.

I Will Tell of My War Story: A Pictorial Account of the Nez Perce War (Samuel and Althea Stroum Book)by: Thompson, Scott M.

I Will Tell of My War Story: A Pictorial Account of the Nez Perce War (Samuel and Althea Stroum Book)
by: Thompson, Scott M.

Softcover. Seattle, University of Washington Press, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover. Like new in publishers shrink-wrap. Chief Joseph's exhausted words of surrender, 'Hear me, my chiefs, I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever', are the accepted end of the Nez Perce War of 1877, in which several bands of Nez Perce attempting to find a new home outside their diminished Idaho reservation clashed with the U.S. military (and occasionally other Indians) along the Clearwater and Big Hole Rivers, and finally at the foot of the Bear Paw Mountains. However, a number of Nez Perce escaped transportation to Indian Territory with Joseph and continued their flight to Canada, with perhaps a hundred eventually joining Sitting Bull's Lakota."I Will Tell of My War Story" reproduces, describes, and discusses a remarkable series of drawings by an anonymous Indian artist who fought with Chief Joseph and later reached Canada. The drawings, in red, blue, and black pencil, include portraits of principal participants in the war, battle scenes, and views of Nez Perce camp life and celebrations during the war and after. The drawings are preserved in a small pocket ledger labeled 'Cash Book' on the front, which was acquired by Indian Agent Charles D. Warner in the 1880s. It was willed by him to a family living in northern Idaho, and is now in the collection of the Idaho State Historical Society. Scott Thompson worked closely both with the owners and with members of the Nez Perce community in preparing his manuscript. Thompson's detective work and research methods to identify Nez Perce and other parties pictured in the Cash Book make fascinating reading. He is careful to point out what is speculation and what has been documented or attested to by experts on dress, weapons, ceremony, and other aspects of Native culture. The Cash Book drawings are unique in several ways. They are one of very few firsthand pictorial records of the Nez Perce War, representing an even scarcer record of this war as seen from the Indian viewpoint. They contain invaluable historical and ethnographic information not only explicit in the form of military and Native dress, regalia, and quite graphic battle scenes, but also implicit. The drawings reveal an important stage of cultural adaptation as shown by the mixture of white and Native goods combined in Nez Perce material culture during the 1870s and 1880s, and by the artist's assimilation of white/European drawing techniques such as texture and perspective. The artist combined these drawing techniques with Native art traditions to make exceptionally effective pictorial communications. Scott M. Thompson is an art teacher at Chase Middle School in Spokane, Washington.
