Reduction, Explanation, and Realism
by: David Charles (Editor), Kathleen Lennon (Editor)

Softcover. Oxford UK, Clarendon Press , 1st, 1992, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 475 pages, What is reduction? Must all discussions of the mind, value, color, biological organisms, and persons aim to reduce these to objects and properties that can be studied by more basic, physical science? Conversely, does failure to achieve a reduction undermine the legitimacy of higher levels of description or explanation? Though reduction has long been a favorite method of analysis in all areas of philosophy, in recent years philosophers have attempted to avoid these traditional alternatives by developing an account of higher-level phenomena which shows them to be grounded in, but not reducible to, basic physical objects and properties. The contributors to this volume examine the motivations for such anti-reductionist views, and assess their coherence and success, in a number of different fields, including moral and mental philosophy, psychology, organic biology, and the social sciences. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise a clean, bright copy.

Return of Eva Peron with The Killings in Trinidad
by: Naipaul, V. S.

Hardcover. NY, Knopf, 1st, 1980, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 227 pages. Previous owner's signature on front fly leaf, else a clean, tight copy. Naipaul presents here four essays about the "half-made" societies, those still suffering from the profound deprivations of colonialism and prey to corruption." He examines the role of Eva Peron as the catalyst for violence in Argentina, with its yearning for a European culture and the physical, historical, cultural reality of the land in which the native Indians were wiped out and the colonialists took over. He writes of the infamous Michael X in Trinidad whose pretensions to power and destiny led to the man's insanity and execution following two pointless murders. Shorter essays address nihilism in the Congo and Naipaul's take on Joseph Conrad and the Heart of Darkness.

Return to Paradise
by: Breyten Breytenbach

Hardcover. NY, Harcourt Brace, 1st, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. The painter, writer, and political activist returns to his native South Africa, where he was once imprisoned for working for the African National Congress, and reflects on the decline of apartheid and his own attachment to the Boer state. He describes the travail of his country riven by racial conflict. He recounts his seven-year imprisonment for treason and shares the passionate love of an exile--he resides in Paris--for his native land. In the recent period of "stability laced with blood" as De Klerk and Mandela's forces struggle to maintain a precarious political equilibrium, Breytenbach has been allowed to return for visits with his Vietnamese wife. Part travelogue and part memoir, this account offers frequent political discussions about the rivalry between the African National Congress and the Inkatha Freedom Party. A careful observer of people, their surroundings, fauna and flora, Breytenbach weaves richly colored narrative history, local lore and personal allusions. Clean copy.

Richard Long: Mountains and Watersby: Long, Richard

Richard Long: Mountains and Waters
by: Long, Richard

Hardcover. New York, George Braziller, 1st, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, Unpaginated. Color and black & white photography. British artist Long ( Walking in Circles ) takes nature treks--in England's Lake District, the Sahara, Japan, Nepal--and creates site-specific works along the way. He fashions a mud circle in the river Avon, traces a line of snow near a temple in Kyoto and erects a circle of stones on a Swiss mountainside. The spare, deeply meditative photographs that he took en route sometimes call to mind prehistoric British megalithic monuments or Native American earthworks, as if he wants to tune in on planetary patterns of energy. At other times Long simply records what he sees, providing dramatic vistas of Iceland's vast rolling hills, Bolivia's high plateau, Washington's forests and Mount Everest's calm majesty. His images, poetic captions and unobstrusive siteworks reflect an artist who is at once traveler, nature-lover and adventurer.

Richmond During the War; Four Years of Personal Observation By a Richmond Lady (Leather Bound Hardcover) by: Putnam, Sallie B.

Richmond During the War; Four Years of Personal Observation By a Richmond Lady (Leather Bound Hardcover)
by: Putnam, Sallie B.

Hardcover. NY, Time Life, reprint, 1983, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 389 pages. Hardcover with no dust jacket. Dark blue leather bound with gilt titles to front cover and spine. Embossed decoration on front cover. Gilt text block edges, red ribbon marker. Clean, tight copy. The commander of a Georgia regiment through much of the Civil War mused later in his memoirs that the heaviest burden fell not upon the man at the front, but upon the woman who waited and prayed for victory: "While the men were carried away with the drunkenness of the war, she dwelt in the stillness of her desolate home." Sallie Brock Putnam spoke for Southern womanhood. She was a native of Madison County, Virginia, and seems to have come from a family of good social standing. The book contains an unexpectedly full history of the Civil War; the author exhibits a strong grasp of strategy and tactics. But at its heart is an incisive eyewitness account of life in a capital that was swollen to four times its normal population by the exigencies of war. Brock's descriptions of Jefferson Davis' inauguration and the Richmond Bread Riot of 1863 are dramatic, but no more so than her accounts of nameless refugees, race relations, opportunistic merchants and blockade runners. Confederate prisons and family matters. In contrast to other female Southern writers of the period, she was more sober and factual, less gossipy and speculative. She wrote with shrewdness and maturity, and with a remarkable lack of self-pity and exaggeration. Yet the reader cannot miss her courage, sacrifice and suffering. Sallie Brock Putnam died in 1911.

River of Darkness: Francisco Orellana's Legendary Voyage of Death and Discovery Down the Amazon
by: Buddy Levy

Hardcover. NY, Bantam, 2nd pr., 1911, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 324 pages with b&w illustrations. A thrilling account of one of history's greatest adventures of discovery. With cinematic immediacy and meticulous attention to historical detail, here is the true story of a legendary sixteenth-century explorer and his death-defying navigation of the Amazon--river of darkness, pathway to gold. Interweaving eyewitness accounts of the quest with newly uncovered details, Buddy Levy reconstructs the seminal journey that has electrified adventurers ever since, as Orellana became the first European to navigate and explore the entire length of the world's largest river. Levy gives a long-overdue account of the native populations--some peaceful and welcoming, offering sustenance and life-saving guidance, others ferociously hostile, subjecting the invaders to gauntlets of unremitting attack and intimations of terrifying rituals. And here is the Amazon itself, a powerful presence whose every twist and turn held the promise of new wonders both natural and man-made, as well as the ever-present risk of death--a river that would hold Orellana in its irresistible embrace to the end of his life. River of the Gods: Genius, Courage, and Betrayal in the Search for the Source of the Nile (SIGNED COPY)
by: Millard, Candice

Hardcover. NY, Doubleday, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. SIGNED BY MILLARD on a tipped-in prlim page. The Rosetta Stone--discovered by French soldiers in 1799, seized by a British envoy, and deciphered 23 years later--set off an obsessive interest in Egypt, including by the newly established Royal Geographical Society, to find the headwaters of the Nile. Bestselling author Millard, a former writer and editor for National Geographic, offers a tense, vibrant history of several dramatic expeditions across East Africa that finally resulted in a successful discovery. Drawing on archival sources and her own multiple trips to Africa following the explorers' paths, Millard creates a palpable sense of the daunting task undertaken by three ambitious men: the magnetic, impulsive, and often combative Richard Burton; John Hanning Speke, an aristocratic infantry lieutenant and passionate hunter whose initial interest in East Africa was largely for the animals he could kill; and their devoted and resourceful native guide, Sidi Mubarak Bombay a former enslaved person whose intimate knowledge of tribes and terrain proved to be indispensable.

Robert Doisneau: From Craft to Artby: Chevrier, Jean-Franaois

Robert Doisneau: From Craft to Art
by: Chevrier, Jean-Franaois

Hardcover. Germany, Steidl, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 224 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Nowhere is the breezy and urbane romance of Paris conjured as memorably as in the photography of Robert Doisneau (1912-1994). A gentle minstrel of visual anecdote, Doisneau interpreted the city's charms in an iconography that both natives and Francophiles instantly recognize: the young hip couple stealing a spontaneous kiss at a busy intersection, the gendarme chatting with a mother while her kid tiptoes along a riverbank bench, the sweetly melancholic abandoned merry-go-round in the rain and the entire pageant of Parisian life mingling at cafes, bus shelters and on the banks of the Seine. Doisneau was possessed of both lightness of touch and spontaneity, as a result of which he has been sometimes championed as a photographer of the "pure" moment. But his ocular touch is even lighter than that suggests-his images are not so much "seized" as "netted." Accompanying the Fondation Cartier-Bresson's exhibition of around 100 prints from the Doisneau estate, From Craft to Art presents these treasures alongside a new version of Jean-Francois Chevrier's classic 1983 essay on the photographer, which describes Doisneau's knack for capturing "the shining melancholy that separates an individual from the crowd.

Hardcover. NY, John Day/Reynal & Hitchcock, 1st, 1937, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, light tan cloth, 119 pages. B&w line illustrations by Bernadine Custer. Rudyard Kipling lived with his wife on a small estate in Dummerston, Vermont, in a house they built called Naulakha, from 1892 to 1896. It was while he was here that he wrote both "The Jungle Book" and "Captains Courageous". Kipling would have been content to live out his life there but in 1896, a dispute arose between the Kiplings an a neighbor led to a court case and the Kiplings left Vermont never to return. This volume, written by a Dummerston native and historian, tells the story of that dispute. Lacks dust jacket, otherwise clean, very good.

Sam Shawby: Lorie Karnath/Sam Shaw

Sam Shaw
by: Lorie Karnath/Sam Shaw

Hardcover. 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover with cover pastedown, gilt lettering. The amiably spontaneous pictures taken by Sam Shaw (1912-1999) are well known: the native and life-long New Yorker shot countless cover photographs for Life and Look in the fifties and sixties, and later also took the still images for the films he produced himself. Shaw and Marilyn Monroe were friends, and he captured her unique aura in countless unpretentious portraits. During the filming of The Seven Year Itch, he staged his probably best known picture with her: Marilyn standing over a subway grate, a waft of air blowing the skirt of her white dress above her knees. Sam Shaw also portrayed almost every major Hollywood star of his day, consistently capturing the moment in his quest for truthfulness, with enthusiasm and from a new perspective, just as if he were selecting the camera angle for a film sequence. The researcher and author Lorie Karnath, the book's editor, enhances the publication with very personal memories of her long-time friend.

Shaking the Dust of Ages: Gypsies and Wanderers of the Central Asian Steppe
by: Ljalja Kuznetsova , Inge Morath, et al.

Hardcover. NY, Aperture, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 168 pages. A native of Kazakhstan, Ljalja Kuznetsova traversed the expanses of the Central Asian steppe to photograph the gypsies, or Roma people, whose mysterious comings and goings have fascinated her since she was a child. Shaking the Dust of Ages: Gypsies and Wanderers of the Central Asian Steppe is the first book devoted to these pictures, for which Kuznetsova won the Mother Jones Leica Medal of Excellence and the Paris Grand Prix for Photography. Kuznetsova's photographs present rare, intimate portraits of gypsies-- whose freedom from the ties of civilization is reflected in the wild winds and unlimited vistas of the steppe landscape. As Kuznetsova traveled through Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the Ukraine, the gypsies continually inspired her. She found in them a people without frontiers, living independent of politics, religious dispute, or social class. Though their presence on the steppe is becoming a thing of the past, Kuznetsova's cast of characters and their world seem timeless in these images.

by: Solomon, Mary/Slemmons, Rod

Hardcover. San Francisco, Chronicle Books, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, gray boards with a dark brown cloth spine and a pictorial label on the cover. No dust jacket issued. Legendary for his massive photographic undertaking, The North American Indian, Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) recorded much more than portraits of Native American tribespeople. Among his huge body of work are numerous images of all manner of native dwellings: tipis, hogans, huts, cliff houses, adobes, and many more that are far less familiar to the public eye. Though people are largely absent from these photographs, each image speaks volumes about the lives and lifestyles of the tribes to which they belonged. Other structures such as tombs, religious buildings, granaries, and totem poles are also featured prominently, further glimpses into ways of life that were in the process of disappearing. Taken from the Dan and Mary Solomon collection,Sites & Structures: The Architectural Photographs of Edward S. Curtis is the first book of Curtis photographs to explore these dwellings and structures, faithfully reproduced from the original prints and gravures.

by: Basu, Shrabani

Softcover. New Lebanon NY, Omega Publications, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 234 pages, b&w photos. Everything about Noor Inayat Khan was extraordinary. A great-great-great granddaughter of Tipu Sultan, the Tiger of Mysore, she was born in Moscow to an American mother and an Indian Sufi Muslim father. Due to the unrest in Russia the family moved to London and from there to France where she spent the happiest years of her life studying music, child psychology and writing children's books. In 1940, her father having deserted the family and died in India years before, the family moved once again to England where Noor was trained as a wireless operator with the aim of sending her to German-occupied France to join up with the resistance. Noor was small and delicate, emotional, imaginative, shy, easily flustered and distracted. On the other hand there was her steely determination to serve her country, the desperate need for wireless operators and her perfect French. She was sent on her mission in June 1943. Her biography contains all the elements of an exciting spy novel but it was horrific and deadly reality. Clean copy.

Streetcar Advertising in Americaby: Woodson J. Savage III

Streetcar Advertising in America
by: Woodson J. Savage III

Hardcover. Croydon UK, Fonthill Media, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 160 pages. You might be surprised to learn that many of the consumer brands and products we enjoy today exist because of streetcar advertising. The Industrial Revolution of the early 1900's and a massive consumer audience riding over 50,000 streetcars in nearly 3,000 cities and towns in every state of the union provided a great opportunity for Barron Collier, a native of Memphis, Tennessee. He simply used streetcar advertising to bring these two forces together and created the largest streetcar advertising empire in the world. By age twenty-six, he was a millionaire and at one time had business offices in 70 cities with business interests in more than a thousand cities. Most of these advertising cards have remarkable color graphics; over 250 of them are included in this book for your viewing pleasure. While streetcar advertising is definitely not a major advertising medium today, the advertising community might be surprised to learn that the basic principles of consumer advertising have not changed that much in the last one hundred years. Investors might do well to review this book to see which companies are still producing these popular products and brands as they represent some of the most successful businesses in America today.

This striking volume captures Goldstein's personal credo, which has come to define her work--"everything goes with anything"--and displays her signature style, from her unique way of mixing and matching print and color to how she uses clothes to create images that go beyond glamour to the metaphysical, spiritual, and natural worlds. Four distinctive chapters--"The Sickness," "The Divine," "Harmonious Discord," and "Pop"--present these imaginative realms in alluring visual detail, accompanied by numerous personal anecdotes that provide insight into Goldstein's process of styling and her creative power, as well as the worlds of fashion, celebrity, and advertising. They highlight her talent for pushing beyond the edge of convention to create moments of individuality that transcend the norm as well as influence and transform our views on fashion, beauty, and popular culture. The publication of this extraordinary collection is a landmark in fashion and image making.

Sylvia Plachy: Self Portrait With Cows Going Home (Aperture Monograph S)by: Plachy, Sylvia

Sylvia Plachy: Self Portrait With Cows Going Home (Aperture Monograph S)
by: Plachy, Sylvia

Hardcover. NY, Aperture, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages. Photographer Plachy proves you can go home again and again in this stunning photographic voyage to her native Hungary. Plachy weaves together contemporary and vintage photographs, mementos and pictures of movie sets (including several from her son Adrien Brody?s Oscar-winning turn in Roman Polanski?s The Pianist). Together, these pieces come together like a puzzle, recreating an Eastern Europe that has weathered dictatorships, two world wars and is now opening up, confusedly, to democracy. The images of stray shadows, apartment buildings studded with bullet holes, and eerie reflections are as evocative as they are subtle. They remind us that great photographs don?t have to rely on shock value to move or disturb. Plachy accents her work with memorable vignettes of her childhood in Communist Hungary as well as of her repeated journeys back east as an adult and an American citizen. One of the most touching of these small stories involves the photographer?s grief-stricken mother, inconsolable after the deaths of her parents in Auschwitz. One day, while her mother stared at a framed photo of her deceased parents, she saw a gold moth land on the glass. "From then on golden butterflies and moths were sacred," writes Plachy. As the book goes on, relative after relative surrounds herself with images to bring back lost loved ones. By the book?s end, we see Plachy herself doing the same thing and realize that through this book she has invited us on a private tour of a lost world, a journey that?s as poignant as it is unforgettable. 22 four-color and 98 duotone images.

The Adventures of Mr Marigold (SIGNED COPY)
by: Tobias, Michael

Hardcover. Nelson NZ, Craig Potton Publishing, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 1836 pages, b&w, some color illustrations. INSCRIBED BY TOBIAS on the front fly leaf. Michael Charles Tobias -- in this colossal comic novel of 625,000 words -- has given us a masterpiece of insight about our lives and troubled times. Through his idealistic hero Murillo Marigold and his earthy sidekick Sannazaro, Tobias meditates on everything that matters: poetry, art, philosophy, alternative technologies, environmentalism, human wrongs, animal rights, sustainable living, and utopias future and past. And what style! Passage after passage of inspired prose, from a mind on fire that sees every moment and encounter as hilarious, holy, and unique. The heart of the book is the author's deeply personal sublime vision: the sacredness of all living beings, the reverence for life, the passionate commitment to social and environmental change. This enormous, challenging beatific vision that reminds us who we are -- and points the way to what the new world could one day be -- makes Mr Marigold a modern classic, at once entertaining, nourishing, revolutionary, and profoundly wise.Clean copy.

The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants by: Prusinkiewicz, Przemyslaw, /Lindenmayer, Aristid

The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants
by: Prusinkiewicz, Przemyslaw, /Lindenmayer, Aristid

Hardcover. NY, Springer Verlag, 2nd pr., 1990, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 228 pages. This classic in Springer's acclaimed Virtual Laboratory series is the first comprehensive account of the computer simulation of plant development. 150 illustrations, one third of them in color, vividly demonstrate the spectacular results of the algorithms used to model plant shapes and developmental processes. The latest in computer-generated images allow us to look at plants growing, self-replicating, responding to external factors and even mutating, without becoming entangled in the underlying mathematical formulae involved. The authors place particular emphasis on Lindenmayer systems - a notion conceived by one of the authors, Aristid Lindenmayer, and internationally recognized for its exceptional elegance in modeling biological phenomena. Nonetheless, the two authors take great care to present a survey of alternative methods for plant modelling.

The Artist Withinby: Preston, Greg

The Artist Within
by: Preston, Greg

Hardcover. Dark Horse Books, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 216 pages. For 15 years Preston has been photographing cartoonists in their natural habitats, the studios in which they work. Revealing the faces behind the familiar drawings, Preston aims his lenses at artists engaged in virtually every realm of cartooning, including superhero comics (Alex Ross, Todd McFarlane); newspaper strips (Cathy Guisewite, Berke Breathed); alternative and underground comics (R. Crumb, the Hernandez brothers); and animation (Chuck Jones, Joseph Barbera). The best portraits capture the spirit of the subjects' work. Mad mainstay Sergio Aragones is surrounded by toy figurines. Loopy caricaturist Arnold Roth's mug sports a wacky grin. Art Spiegelman, known for his formal mastery of the comics medium, looks dead serious. The studio of gritty urban realist Frank Miller looks out on a brick wall. Most welcome are valedictory portraits of titans in the comics field who have passed on since Preston photographed them, including Will Eisner, Jack Kirby, and Carl Barks. Fans of cartooning and of photographic portraiture should enjoy Preston's evocative images of these often-reclusive figures in their working sanctums.

The Barbarians Speak How the Conquered Peoples Shaped Roman Europe by: Wells, Peter S.

The Barbarians Speak How the Conquered Peoples Shaped Roman Europe
by: Wells, Peter S.

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 335 pages. The Barbarians Speak re-creates the story of Europe's indigenous people who were nearly stricken from historical memory even as they adopted and transformed aspects of Roman culture. The Celts and Germans inhabiting temperate Europe before the arrival of the Romans left no written record of their lives and were often dismissed as "barbarians" by the Romans who conquered them. Accounts by Julius Caesar and a handful of other Roman and Greek writers would lead us to think that prior to contact with the Romans, European natives had much simpler political systems, smaller settlements, no evolving social identities, and that they practiced human sacrifice. A more accurate, sophisticated picture of the indigenous people emerges, however, from the archaeological remains of the Iron Age. Here Peter Wells brings together information that has belonged to the realm of specialists and enables the general reader to share in the excitement of rediscovering a "lost people." In so doing, he is the first to marshal material evidence in a broad-scale examination of the response by the Celts and Germans to the Roman presence in their lands.

The Biblical Politics of John Locke by: Parker, Kim Ian

The Biblical Politics of John Locke
by: Parker, Kim Ian

Hardcover. Ontario CA, Wilfrid Laurier University Press, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 201 pages. Clean, bright copy. "Parker has produced a clear and well-researched study of an aspect of Locke's thought that theologians may have tended to miss because it is to do with politics, and that political theorists may have tended to overlook because it involves the Bible and theology. For this he is to be congratulated. Theologians today may also learn from the debate between Filmer and Locke the profoundly unsatisfactory character of attempts to resolve contemporary issues, whether in politics, society, or religion, by imaginative and inventive applications of stray texts. In this respect what is past gives a warning to the present. How will current debates citing biblical texts (for example, in debates about the treatment of homosexuals, or about the consecration of women, or about divine intervention and design in creation) be seen in centuries hence? Those who, with Locke, confidently condemn the speck distorting Filmer's religio-political view, must examine whether, what they see is free from distortion by the `learned Gibberish' of inherited prejudices and convictions. It is to Parker's credit that this useful contribution to the history of thought also raises controversial contemporary challenges.''

by: Doug Wilson

Hardcover. NY, St. Martin's Press, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. A reminder of the time when America fell in love with a tall, lanky, curly-haired pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. For a time in the 1970s, the country was in thrall to Mark Fidrych, who came to be known as "The Bird" for his resemblance to Big Bird. Fidrych emerged in the summer of 1976 and became an unlikely but legitimate phenomenon. Wilson tells the Bird's story in this biography of the Massachusetts native whose antics included tending to his own pitching mound during games and allegedly talking to the baseball. Clean copy.

The Book of Weirdo: A Retrospective of R. Crumb's Legendary Humor Comics Anthology by: Cooke, Jon B.

The Book of Weirdo: A Retrospective of R. Crumb's Legendary Humor Comics Anthology
by: Cooke, Jon B.

Hardcover. Last Gasp, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 288 pages. The Book of Weirdo is the definitive - and hugely entertaining- examination of Weirdo magazine, renowned underground comix cartoonist Robert Crumb's legendary humor comics anthology, which was originally published throughout the 1980s. A "low-brow" counterpoint to Art Spiegelman and Francoise Mouley's rather high-faluttin' RAW comix publication, Weirdo influenced an entire generation of alternative and neo-underground artists, as well as creative refuge for the underground comix veterans, and this book features the complete story of the well-recalled comics magazine, along with testimonials from over 130 of the publication's contributors, including interviews with Weirdo's three editors - R. "Keep on Truckin'" Crumb, Peter "Hate" Bagge, and Aline "The Bunch" Kominsky-Crumb - and publisher "Baba Ron" Turner. As much a history of the alternative comics scene of the 1980s - from New York City punk to Seattle grunge - this exhaustive retrospective includes rare and unseen artwork from that era, as well as new comics from modern-day artists celebrating their love for the great oddball magazine. In its time, the periodical featured the finest work of many artists, particularly the best material by Robert Crumb himself, Weirdo's founder and best known for ZAP Comix, Fritz the Cat, and Mr. Natural, and a man widely heralded as the greatest cartoonist of all time. We get photos of the various contributors, some samples of the work, more than a few brand-spanking-new artistic tributes to the magazine and the people who made it. And lots and lots of stories about what it was like to work for and with Robert Crumb.
