by: Saeks, Diane Dorrans

Hardcover. New York , Rizzoli, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 224 pages, color illustrations. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Drawing from a rich and influential heritage that spans the 20th century, design in Palm Springs runs the gamut from Spanish hacienda-style architecture and interiors to classic mid-century constructions and contemporary experimentations. Its recent rediscovery by trend-setters like Tom Ford, Jonathan Adler, and Bruce Weber has made Palm Springs superhot again-as a destination and for design inspiration. This desert laboratory of avant-garde architecture, interior decorating, and freewheeling experimentation is now a focus for design and fashion fanatics around the world. Palm Springs Living showcases the inspiring, diverse range of exteriors and interiors in Palm Springs. Included are intimate peeks into the private homes of celebrity residents and brand-new photography of the legendary Modernist houses by Richard Neutra, Albert Frey, and many others.

Softcover. NY, Thunder's Mouth Press, reprint, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 259 pages. The Origins of Cool in Postwar America
by: Dinerstein, Joel

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 541 pages. b&w illustrations. As Joel Dinerstein reveals in this book, cool began as a stylish defiance of racism, a challenge to suppressed sexuality, a philosophy of individual rebellion, and a youthful search for social change. Through portraits of iconic figures, Dinerstein illuminates the cultural connections and artistic innovations among Lester Young, Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Jack Kerouac, Albert Camus, Marlon Brando, and James Dean, among others. We eavesdrop on conversations among John-Paul Sartre, Simone De Beauvoir, and Miles Davis, and on a forgotten debate between Lorraine Hansberry and Norman Mailer over the 'white negro' and Black cool. We come to understand how the cool worlds of Beat writers and Method actors emerged from the intersections of film noir, jazz, and existentialism. Clean copy.

Trading Gazes: Euro-American Women Photographers and Native North Americans, 1880-1940
by: Susan Bernardin, Melody Graulich, et al.

Softcover. NJ, Rutgers University Press, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 244 pages. The story of westering Americans in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries has been told most notably through photographs of American Indians. Unlike this vast archive, produced primarily by male photographers, which depicted American Indians as either vanishing or domesticated, the lesser-known images by the women featured in Trading Gazes provide new ways of seeing the intersecting histories of colonial expansion and indigenous resistance. Four unconventional women-Jane Gay, who documented land allotment to the Nez Perces; Kate Cory, an artist who lived for years in a Hopi community; Grace Nicholson, who purchased cultural items from the Karuk and other northern California tribes; and Mary Schaffer, who traveled among the Stoney and Metis of Alberta, Canada-used cameras to document their cross-cultural encounters. Trading Gazes reconstructs the rich biographical and historical contexts explaining these women's presence in different Native communities of the North American West. Their photographs not only record the unprecedented opportunities available for Euro-American women eager to shed gender restrictions, but also reveal how women's newfound mobility depended on the increasing restrictions placed on Native Americans in this era.
