A New Theory of Urban Design by: Alexander Christopher; Hajo Neis; Artemis Anninou; Ingrid King

A New Theory of Urban Design
by: Alexander Christopher; Hajo Neis; Artemis Anninou; Ingrid King

Hardcover. NY, Oxford University Press, 1st, 1987, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 251 pages profusely illustrated in b&w. In this groundbreaking volume, architect and planner Christopher Alexander presents a new theory of urban design which attempts to recapture the process by which cities develop organically. To discover the kinds of laws needed to create a growing whole in a city, Alexander proposes here a preliminary set of seven rules which embody the process at a practical level and which are consistent with the day-to-day demands of urban development. He then puts these rules to the test, setting out with a number of his graduate students to simulate the urban redesign of a high-density part of San Francisco, initiating a project that encompassed some ninety different design problems, including warehouses, hotels, fishing piers, a music hall, and a public square. This extensive experiment is documented project by project, with detailed discussion of how each project satisfied the seven rules, accompanied by floorplans, elevations, street grids, axonometric diagrams and photographs of the scaled-down model which clearly illustrate the discussion. Architecture and Town Planning in Colonial North America (3 Vol. Set)by: James D. Kornwolf and Georgiana W. Kornwolf

Architecture and Town Planning in Colonial North America (3 Vol. Set)
by: James D. Kornwolf and Georgiana W. Kornwolf

Hardcover. Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, An extraordinary work, unparalleled in its breadth and depth of detail, this three-volume set offers the first comprehensive history of architecture and town planning throughout colonial North America, from Russian Alaska to French Quebec, to Spanish Florida and California, to British, Dutch, and other settlements on the East Coast. Across this vast terrain, James Kornwolf conjures the outlines of the constructed environment as it emerged in settlements and communities, in structures and sites, and in the flourishes and idiosyncrasies of the families and individuals who erected and inhabited colonial buildings and towns. Here as never before readers can observe the impulses and principles of colonial design and planning as they are implemented in the buildings and streets, harbors and squares, gardens and landscapes of the New World. Incorporating more than 3,000 illustrations, Kornwolf's massive work conveys the full range of the colonial encounter with the continent's geography, from the high forms of architecture through formal landscape design and town planning. From these pages emerge the fine arts of environmental design, an understanding of the political and economic events that helped to determine settlement in North America, an appreciation of the various architectural and landscape forms that the settlers created, and an awareness of the diversity of the continent's geography and its peoples. Considering the humblest buildings along with the mansions of the wealthy and powerful, public buildings, forts, and churches, Kornwolf captures the true dynamism and diversity of colonial communities-their rivalries and frictions, their outlooks and attitudes-as they extended their hold on the land. His work conveys for the first time the full scale, from intimate to grand, of their enduring transformation of the natural landscape of North America. NOTE: DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

China's Old Dwellings is the most comprehensive critical examination of China's folk architectural forms in any language. It begins by tracing the interest in Chinese vernacular buildings in the twentieth century. Early chapters detail common and distinctive spatial components, including the interior and exterior modular spaces that are axiomatic components of most Chinese dwellings as well as conventional structural components and building materials common in Chinese construction. Later chapters examine representative housing types in the three broad cultural realms--northern, southern, and western--into which China has been divided. Knapp completes his survey with an exploration of China's old dwellings in the context of the rapid economic and social changes that are destroying so

Cottages in the Sun: Bungalows of Venice, California
by: Margaret Bach, Melba Levick (Photographer)

Hardcover. NY, Rizzoli, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, More than a century ago, when Abbot Kinney built his Venice-of-America with its network of canals and fanciful buildings, cultural aspirations were high. Over the years, this aura of fantasy and imaginative possibility endured as integral to the zeitgeist of the place. Today, this spirit of innovation and creativity is richly expressed in the vintage bungalows and cottages that have been embraced and brought back to life by homeowners more in love with place than size. Stalwart survivors of the ebb and flow of the area's fortunes over a century, these small homes channel the creative spirit of the place and provide a welcome counterpoint to oversize houses. Color, landscape, treasured collections, personal narrative, contemporary overlays and additions, art and craft, and inventive design--all combine in various ways to produce domestic environments with unique and deeply personal points of view.

Domus, Volume 2, 1940-1949
by: Giorgi, Manolo De/ Luigi Spinelli / Charlotte Fiell/Peter Fiell

Hardcover. Taschen, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 580 pages. 1940-1949: Destruction and Reconstruction. This volume covers the 1940s, when fascism came to a climax and World War II led to the extensive destruction of Europe. But the second half of this decade was also a time of reconstruction, democratization, and the related search for new social values. Unlike in Nazi Germany, in fascist Italy Modernism was able to advance in architecture and design - as proved impressively by the buildings and designs by Carlo Mollino, Gian Luigi Banfi, Franco Albini, and Giuseppe Terragni that are documented herein. After the war, Organic Design emerged alongside the International style. This edition reflects upon the economic, social, and cultural problems of the time, but also shows how the force of the avant-garde continued to thrive in Italy, Switzerland, Scandinavia and the USA. Reports and features on modern industrial design and furniture, as well as domestic and business interiors stand side by side with articles about novel prefabricated houses. In publisher's shrink wrap. Due to size and weight, DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

by: Casciani, Stefano

Hardcover. Taschen, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 580 pages. 1960-1954: Design Goes Pop. This volume concentrates on the architecture and design of the first half of the 1960s, characterized by the coexistence of a number of different styles. The aftermath of the International style and Good Design were still noticeable whereas Organic Design, which had developed in parallel since the late 1940s, gradually lost its influence. From the early 1960s onwards, a new force took its place, geared toward Pop Art and popular culture, leading to Pop Design. This trend is particularly recognizable in interior design, where a variety of new synthetics and foam plastics replaced traditional materials such as metal, glass or wood, pointing the way to completely new designs. Volume V documents this with examples of designs by Ray and Charles Eames, Verner Panton, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, and Joe Colombo. On the architectural side, the impressive buildings of Gio Ponti, Carlo Scarpa, Angelo Mangiarotti, James Stirling, and others./// Hardcover, 580 pages. 1960-1954: Design Goes Pop. Domus, Volume 6, 1965-1969
by: Sudjic/ Charlotte Fiell, et al., Deyan

Hardcover. Taschen, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 580 pages. 1965-1969: A Break from the Past, a Nod to the Future. The late 1960s, when a radical change took place in the fields of architecture and design, are the focus of this volume. Old values such as functionality, elegance, and faithfulness to materials, which had been relevant for nearly half a century, lost their importance and made space for the ideas of pop culture and the sociocritical experiments of a new generation of architects and designers who no longer wanted to live within the styles of their fathers and grandfathers. Groups of architects and designers like Archizoom and Archigram questioned long-established status symbols, fashion, and consumption and created provocative alternative designs, which were reflected in Anti and Radical Design. Volume VI in the domus series features designs by Joe Colombo, Ettore Sottsass, Gae Aulenti, Olivier Mourgue, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Verner Panton, Kenzo Tange, Luigi Moretti, Oscar Niemeyer, and Gio Ponti.

Eden by Design: The 1930 Olmsted-Bartholomew Plan for Los Angeles Regionby: Hise, Greg, and Deverell, William F, and Olin, Laurie (Afterword by)

Eden by Design: The 1930 Olmsted-Bartholomew Plan for Los Angeles Region
by: Hise, Greg, and Deverell, William F, and Olin, Laurie (Afterword by)

Softcover. Berkeley CA, University of California Press, 1st, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover. 314 pages, b&w illustrations. In 1930 the Olmsted Brothers and Harland Bartholomew & Associates submitted a report, "Parks, Playgrounds, and Beaches for the Los Angeles Region," to the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. After a day or two of coverage in the newspapers, the report dropped from sight. The plan set out a system of parks and parkways, children's playgrounds, and public beaches. It is a model of ambitious, intelligent, sensitive planning commissioned at a time when land was available, if only the city planners had had the fortitude and vision to act on its recommendations. "Parks, Playgrounds, and Beaches" has become a highly valued but difficult-to-find document. In this book, Greg Hise and William Deverell examine the reasons it was called for, analyze why it failed, and open a discussion about the future of urban public space. In addition to their introduction and a facsimile reproduction of the report, Eden by Design includes a dialogue between Hise, Deverell, and widely admired landscape architect Laurie Olin that illuminates the significance of the Olmsted-Bartholomew report and situates it in the history of American landscape planning. Clean copy.

Eileen Gray: Design and Architecture, 1878-1976
by: Philippe Garner

Hardcover. Taschen, reprint, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 160 pages. Though her work has often been overshadowed by that of her peers such as Le Corbusier and Marcel Breuer, Irish designer, lacquer-artist, and architect Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is now widely recognized as a designer of great talent and individuality. She first excelled in the exacting craft of lacquer, creating screens, panels, furniture, and objects of technical virtuosity and poetic strength. Eileen Gray then developed an interest in architecture, designing two houses, "E-1027" (completed 1929) and "Tempe a Pailla" (completed 1934) in the south of France, which are seminal examples of the spirit of the Modern movement. This book analyses and illustrates the full range of her furniture, interiors, and completed architectural projects. Reprint of the edition of 1993.

Elysium Britannicum, or the Royal Gardens by: Evelyn, John, Editor: Ingram, John E.

Elysium Britannicum, or the Royal Gardens
by: Evelyn, John, Editor: Ingram, John E.

Hardcover. Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardecover in a bright dust jacket, 492 pages. In a letter to Sir Thomas Browne about his proposed magnum opus on gardens, John Evelyn stated his purpose: "to refine upon some particulars, especially concerning the ornaments of Gardens, which I shal endeavor so to handle that persons of all conditions and faculties, which delight in Gardens, may therein encounter something for their owne advantage." In his Elysium Britannicum, or The Royal Gardens, Evelyn indeed produced a rich document, an assemblage of the horticultural knowledge and wisdom of the seventeenth century. An intriguing intellectual whom many have called a virtuoso, Evelyn was a garden designer, a noted author and translator of garden books, and a founding member of the Royal Society in 1660, where experimental science was at the heart of intellectual debate. Interlacing in his work practical, literary, and philosophical approaches to landscape architecture, Evelyn created the first large-scale encyclopedic work on the science and art of gardening. Evelyn never saw his great work published. Until now, the entire Elysium Britannicum, or The Royal Gardens has never appeared in print. In an impressive transcription, John E. Ingram makes the document--of which only a single folio volume remains--accessible to a wide range of scholars. Complete with Evelyn's extensive marginalia, interlineations, and tipped-in addenda, the manuscript is expertly organized by Ingram to preserve the meaningful complexity of Evelyn's original. Clean copy. DUE TO WEIGHT, DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.
