After the Scream: The Late Paintings of Edvard Munch
by: Prelinger, Elizabeth

Hardcover. New Haven/Atlanta, Yale/High Museum of Art, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 176 pages, color illustrated. Like new copy in a bright dust jacket. Expressing the anxieties of the late nineteenth century and the uncertainties of the modern world, Edvard Munch (1862-1944) often depicted in his works dangerously seductive fin de siecle women, sickly figures, and isolated characters in barren landscapes. These powerful, haunting paintings are widely recognized and revered, especially his iconic work The Scream (1893). Yet few admirers of Munch's early works realize that the artist lived well into the twentieth century and was enormously productive almost to the time of his death. This compelling book, focusing on more than sixty of Munch's later paintings, reveals the surprising, vibrant work of a fascinating man who never ceased to grow as an artist. Following decades of restless wandering among the capitals of Europe, Munch suffered a breakdown in Copenhagen in 1908 and retreated to his native Norway. In 1916 he purchased an estate near present-day Oslo where he lived and worked, mostly in his outdoor studio, for the next twenty years. Although Munch never abandoned a deeply introspective approach to image-making,

Caspar David Friedrich
by: Hofmann, Werner

Hardcover. New York, Thames and Hudson, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 299 pages, 193 illustrations, 150 in color. Clean copy in a bright dust jacket with a mild crease to the dust jacket. Werner Hofmann vividly demonstrates Caspar David Friedrich's extraordinary ability to reproduce the natural world in faithful detail, while at the same time imbuing it with spiritual and religious significance. Caught between the near and the distant, the finite and the infinite, his human figures find a space in which to engage in the thoughtful contemplation of nature and the divine. Carefully placing the artist in a wider context, Hofmann examines contemporary judgments and influences on Friedrich's work. The beautiful illustrations include many of Friedrich's drawings and watercolors as well as over ninety of his works in oils.

Cut with the Kitchen Knife : The Weimar Photomontages of Hannah Hochby: Maud Lavin/Hannah Hoch - Product Image

Cut with the Kitchen Knife : The Weimar Photomontages of Hannah Hoch
by: Maud Lavin/Hannah Hoch

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, in a bright dust jacket, 278 pages. An important pioneer of the artform that became known as photomontage. Hoch (November 1, 1889 to May 31, 1978) was a German Dada artist. She is best known for her work of the Weimar period, when she was one of the originators of photomontage. Hoch was the lone woman among the Berlin Dada group, however she was dismayed to the Dadaists lip service to women's emancipation and her work echos her feelings that there were difference between women in media and reality. Marriage did not escape her criticism. She depicted brides as mannequins and children, reflecting the idea that women are not seen as complete people and have little control over their lives. A long-time German resident, her work fell out of favor after WWII although she continued to produce her photomontages and exhibit them internationally until her death in 1978.

by: Hoberg Annegret, Friedel Helmut

Softcover. Munchen, Prestel, 1st, 1992, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 300 pages illustrated in color. Gabriele Munter played a vital role in the development of German Expressionism in the early years of the 20th century. She was at the forefront of a group of highly influential avant-garde artists?including her lover, Wassily Kandinsky?who redirected the course of German modernism and shaped Expressionist aesthetics. Munter was a founding member both of the progressive artists' association, the Neue Kunstlervereinigung Munchen (NKVM), and the celebrated avant-garde group, der Blaue Reiter (the Blue Rider). The book focuses on 20 important paintings from the most intensively creative period of her career and illustrates some 30 other works by her. Essays introduce this remarkable woman and her art and discuss her gendered role as an avant-garde artist in the first phase of modernism. GERMAN TEXT. Clean, bright copy.

Hardcover. London/NY, Prestel/DelMonico Books, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 272 pages. Richly illustrated and filled with detailed information about one of the leading artists of the 20th century, this is the first book to explore in depth the Saint Louis Art Museum's outstanding holdings of paintings by Max Beckmann-the largest collection of its kind in the world. One of the greatest German painters of the 20th century, Max Beckmann came to America in the mid-1940s and settled in St. Louis. There he met the retailer and collector Morton D. May. By the time May died, in 1983, he had amassed a comprehensive collection of Beckmann's oeuvre, most of which he bequeathed to the Saint Louis Art Museum (SLAM). The stunning breadth and power of Beckmann's work are explored in this volume, which examines all thirty-nine paintings in SLAM's collection. Featuring some of Beckmann's most celebrated images, this book offers fascinating insights into Beckmann's life and art-in particular his underappreciated early work and previously unexplored aspects of his final years in the United States.
