This handsome book is the first full study of American marine painting ever published. In it are drawn together representative works by more than sixty painters from Colonial times to the present, including such diverse figures as John Smibert, John Quidor, John Marin, Albert Bierstadt, Geroge Bellows, Thomas Chambers, and Andrew Wyeth. Mr. Wilmerding discusses the development of these artists' concern with marine subjects, the influences (both native and European) on their styles and approaches, and the meaning of their achievement for American art in general.

Lobster fishermen, art by Mead Schaeffer. 10.5 x 13.5". Very good. Schaeffer enrolled in the Pratt Institute in 1916. In 1922, at age 24, he was hired to illustrate a series of classic novels for publisher Dodd Mead. During the 1930s and 1940s he received commissions from magazines including Good Housekeeping, McCall's, the Saturday Evening Post, The Ladies Home Journal, Country Gentleman, and Cosmopolitan. He produced 46 covers for the weekly Saturday Evening Post. His work as a war correspondent for the Post during World War II resulted in a well-known series of covers illustrating American military personnel. For most of his career lived in Arlington, Vermont, where his studio was in a barn. Norman Rockwell was a good friend, and Schaeffer and his family often posed as models for Rockwell's Saturday Evening Post illustrations and paintings.

Von Schmidt began his art studies at the California School of Arts and Crafts while he was still in high school. In 1924, he entered the Grand Central School of Art in New York City. He moved to the suburban community of New Rochelle which was a well-known artist colony and home to many of the top commercial illustrators of the day such as Frank and J. C. Leyendecker and Norman Rockwell. Also in residence were Al Parker, Mead Schaeffer and Dean Cornwell, who, along with Tom Lovell and N. C. Wyeth would become leaders in the field. Schmidt's work appeared primarily in magazines like Collier's Weekly, Cosmopolitan, Liberty, The Saturday Evening Post, and Sunset. Although he preferred magazine work and illustrated few books, he spent two years preparing sixty illustrations for a deluxe edition of Willa Cather's Death Comes for the Archbishop. In 1948, he was recruited by Albert Dorne to be one of the founding faculty for the Famous Artists School. He was awarded the first gold medal by the trustees of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1968.
