Dialogue in Early South Asian Religions: Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain Traditions by: Brian Black, Laurie Patton

Dialogue in Early South Asian Religions: Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain Traditions
by: Brian Black, Laurie Patton

Softcover. NY, Routledge, reprint, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, pictorial wrappers, 265 pages. Dialogue between characters is an important feature of South Asian religious literature: entire narratives are often presented as a dialogue between two or more individuals, or the narrative or discourse is presented as a series of embedded conversations from different times and places. Including some of the most established scholars of South Asian religious texts, this book examines the use of dialogue in early South Asian texts with an interdisciplinary approach that crosses traditional boundaries between religious traditions. The contributors shed new light on the cultural ideas and practices within religious traditions, as well as presenting an understanding of a range of dynamics - from hostile and competitive to engaged and collaborative. This book is the first to explore the literary dimensions of dialogue in South Asian religious sources, helping to reframe the study of other literary traditions around the world. Clean, bight copy.

Enter the Dragon: Chinas Undeclared War Against the U.S. in Korea, 1950-51
by: Russell Spurr

Hardcover. NY, Newmarket Press, 1st, 1988, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a lightly worn dust jacket, 335 pages, b&w illustrations. This account of the intervention into the Korean war of the Chinese People's Liberation Army is told from the point of view of the Chinese. The author did much of his research inside China, interviewing participants, and presents vivid portraits of the soldiers and such figures as Mao Zedong and Douglas MacArthur. Korea was the focus of the first great East-West confrontation, and the war cost over 140,000 American lives. The crucial intervention of the Chinese and their near victory brought the super-powers to the brink of nuclear war. Written by a British newspaper reporter who covered the latter stages of the war, this book contains narrative from extensive interviews with participants in the Korean War, including many Chinese, which differentiates it from most other accounts. Fabric of Enchantment: Batik from the North Coast of Javaby: Heringa Rens & Harmen C. Veldhuisen

Fabric of Enchantment: Batik from the North Coast of Java
by: Heringa Rens & Harmen C. Veldhuisen

Hardcover. Weatherhill, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 239 pages. 266 illustrations including 163 in full color. The batik designs of Java's North Coast are particularly varied in both design and color. With their fanciful, highly imaginative motifs and luminous tints, they are more immediately appealing than the sombre blue and brown batik of Central Java. It was a chance encounter in a Hong Kong antique shop that inspired photojournalist Inger McCabe Elliot to devote over three decades to assembling one of the world's finest collections, which she presented to the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art in 1991. This volume, published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Museum, celebrates Elliott's gift and presents her collection. Essays by authorities on the subject examine the 82 featured batik textiles from historical, cultural and aesthetic perspectives. The essays are followed by biographies of some of the most distinguished batik designers and entrepreneurs and a descriptive catalogue of the batiks. Appendices document design formats and motifs, as well as the complete production process of North Coast batiks. Clean copy,

by: Jean Lacouture

NY, Random House, 1st US, 1968, Book: Very Good, Hardcover, black cloth stamped in green on front, gilt on spine. 313 pages. Lacouture's biography of Ho Chi Minh examines the North Vietnamese leader's political development from his early years in France, through World War Two, and up until 1968 when this book was first published. Lacouture doesn't avoid the negative aspects of his political career, but these negatives (e.g. harsh control of the starving North Vietnamese in the 50s) only help to put in perspective Vietnam's similarly harsh treatment by Western and Eastern powers alike.
