The drawings are reproduced by offset in full color from Fraser's personal Sketchbook covering the period 1796-1806, started when he was only 14 years old. Charles Fraser (1782 -1860), was an American artist best known for his miniatures of prominent American figures. In the Charleston of his day, Fraser was as well known for his orations, literary pursuits, cultural authority and civic engagement as he was for his art, and, towards the end of his life, was lauded as the city's most beloved artist. Cabins & Castles was first completed in 1981, a joint effort of the Historic Resources Commission and the North Carolina Division of Archives and History. The book became enormously popular with natives, tourists, historians, and preservationists as a primary source of knowledge about the richly historic Buncombe County. Cabins & Castles contains a historical overview, as well as the specific record of individual properties built in the area, primarily those constructed prior to 1930. Historical sketches of Buncombe County and Asheville written by John Ager and Talmage Powell are followed by editor Douglas Swaim's essay on local architectural history. Rapid development in the urban and rural areas of Buncombe County makes this record timely and valuable. Clean copy.

Piedmont Plantation tells the history of a unique plantation complex in North Carolina and of the Bennehan and Cameron families that owned and developed it. The narrative covers one hundred and fifty years and is based primarily on research in the many thousands of family papers deposited in the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Interwoven with the family history of four generations are descriptions of their slaves and overseers and of the buildings they erected and lived or worked in, all correlated with the agricultural enterprise that underpinned this 30,000-acre domain. Carefully researched, Piedmont Plantation will appeal to the specialist and general reader alike. Scholars looking for primary material will discover here much useful information as well as guideposts to additional sources. Originally published in hardcover in 1985. Clean copy.
