The American Meadow Garden: Creating a Natural Alternative to the Traditional Lawn
by: Greenlee, John / Saxon Holt (Photographer)

Hardcover. Portland OR, Timber Press, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 277 pages, illustrated in color. Ornamental grass expert John Greenlee creates a new model for homeowners and gardeners. For Greenlee, a meadow isn't a random assortment of messy, anonymous grasses. Rather, it is a shimmering mini-ecosystem, in which regionally appropriate grasses combine with colorful perennials to form a rich tapestry that is friendly to all life -- with minimal input of water, time, and other scarce resources. Kids and pets can play in complete safety, and birds and butterflies flock there. A prairie style planting is a place you want to be. With decades of experience as a nurseryman and designer, John Greenlee is the perfect guide. He details all the practicalities of site preparation, plant selection, and maintenance; particularly valuable are his explanations of how ornamental grasses perform in different climates and areas. Gorgeous photography by Saxon Holt visually illustrates the message with stunning examples of meadow gardens from across the country. Clean copy.

The Grape Grower: A Guide to Organic Viticulture
by: Lon Rombough

Softcover. WHITE RIVER JUNCTION VT, Chelsea Green Publishing , 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 289 pages, color and b&w illustrations. Grapes are the most popular and widely grown fruit in the world. From the tropics to Alaska, grapes will grow successfully in almost every climate. Whether you raise them for fresh eating, or for making wine, juice, or jellies and preserves, the right grapes will reward you with abundant crops for a modest investment of time and effort. Now for the first time comes a book for grape growers who wish to use organic growing methods to raise healthy, thriving vineyards in the backyard or on a small commercial scale. The Grape Grower distills the broad knowledge and longtime personal experience of Lon Rombough, one of North America's foremost authorities on viticulture. From finding and preparing the right site for your vineyard to training, trellising, and pruning vines to growing new grapes from seeds and cuttings, The Grape Grower offers thorough and accessible information on all the basics. The chapters on grape species, varieties, and hybrids are alone worth the price of a college course in viticulture. Technical information on the major (and minor) insect pests and diseases that affect grapes, as well as their organic controls, makes this book an invaluable reference that readers will turn to again and again. Trouble Free Clematis: The Viticellas
by: Howells, John

Hardcover. Woodbridge UK., Garden Art Press, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 191 pages, color illustrated. The viticella clematis is an undiscovered garden treasure - abundant, vigorous and varied in appearance, easy to grow and maintain. They are the perfect starting point for growers new to the clematis, and an inspiring presence in any garden. 'A garden plant second to none', in the author's words. The standard Large Flowered varieties of clematis, being easier to display in orderly garden centres, completely dominate in the commercial market. Viticellas, by comparison, are easier to grow, vigorous, hardy and completely resistant to the threat of Clematis Wilt (Stem Rot) which is a consistent obstacle to the growth of healthy Large Flowered clematis plants. This book is the only one on this subject, and offers a valuable practical guide to viticellas, leading the reader through the varieties of small, medium and large blooms, and explaining the route to successful growth. The striking impact of the viticella combined with the ease of cultivation offers exciting prospects for gardeners. Clean copy.

Viewing Olmsted: Photographs by Robert Burley, Lee Friedlander, and Geoffrey James
by: Lambert, Phyllis

Softcover. Cambridge MA, The MIT Press, 1st, 1997, Book: N, Softcover, 119 pages. Ultimately, Viewing Olmsted is a savvy and thought-provoking, yet diminutive picture book. The collaboration of three brilliant photographers under the sponsorship of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, it guides the reader down three highly personal, present day tours of legendary parks designed by Olmsted, the patron saint of American landscape architecture. Happily, though, its readers are left to intellectually fend for themselves as to meanings or implications of Frederick Olmsted's work, genius, and lasting influence as the man who designed such famous spaces as Central Park. Academics and artists will appreciate the fresh visual perspectives offered on the man's legacy, the sometimes soothing, sometimes haunting nature-by-design retreats for the urban soul. Those with more than a passing interest in the ways in which man interacts with his `natural' surroundings will appreciate vistas evocative of place rather than time. To the authors' credit, the book raises more questions than it answers, and is of a scale to fit neatly into a travel case. Far from definitive, the book is, nevertheless, a must have for architects, landscape architects, photographers, and Olmsted aficionados.
