Thord-Gray was a career military man (the list of conflicts engaged in is impressive), he here concentrates on the 2 years he lent his considerable expertise to the various rebel armies of the revolution, including Pancho Villa, Venustiano Carranza and Alvaro Obregon. He mostly led native Indians and farmers through tortuous country on various scouting expeditions, engaging smaller groups of federal troops. You learn an incredible amount about the culture and history of these peoples he worked with. A clean, bright copy

The 369th became one of the few U.S. units that American commanding general John J. Pershing agreed to let serve under French command. Donning French uniforms and taking up French rifles, the men of the 369th fought valiantly alongside French Moroccans and held one of the widest sectors on the Western Front. The entire regiment was awarded the Croix de Guerre, the French government's highest military honor. Clean copy.

Day-by-day eye witness account of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and the seven weeks that followed. Dr. Hachiya, himself wounded in the blast, was director of a major Hiroshima hospital. Translated and edited by Warner Wells, M.D. One of the best first hand accounts; much on the the gradual "discovery" of radiation sickness. The dust jacket's rear panel has photo of the author's surviving family. Bookplate opposite half-title page, otherwise clean.

Standard account by this captain (1800-76) whose "father. was a pioneer in the construction of the squadron, and served actively upon the upper lakes during the war" -- which inspired and informed this chronicle of the pivotal War of 1812 battle off the coast of Ohio in which the American fleet gained control and turned the tides against the British.

In 1949, as the Chinese Civil War was about to enter its final, explosive stage, the small British frigate HMS Amethyst was sent on a dangerous mission up the Yangtze River to protect British citizens in Nanking. En route it was attacked by the Chinese Communists and held hostage on the river for several months before the crew managed to make a daring escape. The Amethyst captured news headlines around the world and became an unlikely symbol of the cold war in Asia. This dramatic episode, hailed in the West as a triumph of the human spirit but bitterly condemned by the Chinese Communists, was to prejudice Anglo-Chinese relations for years to come.
