Taxes And State Power: Political Instability in Bolivia, 1900-1950
by: Carmenza Gallo

Hardcover. Philadelphia, Temple University Press, 1st, 1991, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a dust jacket with fading to spine, 174 pages. In this interpretation of Bolivia's political and social development, Carmenza Gallo focuses on the impact of the Bolivian tax code and its relationship to class structure. She argues that differences in state formation in primary export economies merge from variation of three main elements: class structure; the economic base and the export sector's degree of integration into the domestic economy; and the reliance of fiscal resources on export sectors. Gallo produces a more complete view of the state's responses to internal and international circumstances and a better understanding of the conditions under which officials of weak states, like Bolivia, act independently of upper classes.

The Brazilian Photographs of Genevieve Naylor, 1940-1942
by: Robert M. Levine

Softcover. Durham NC, Duke University Press, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 156 pages. In the early 1940s as the conflict between the Axis and the Allies spread worldwide, the U.S. State Department turned its attention to Axis influence in Latin America. As head of the Office of Inter-American Affairs, Nelson Rockefeller was charged with cultivating the region's support for the Allies while portraying Brazil and its neighbors as dependable wartime partners. Genevieve Naylor, a photojournalist previously employed by the Associated Press and the WPA, was sent to Brazil in 1940 by Rockefeller's agency to provide photographs that would support its need for propaganda. Often balking at her mundane assignments, an independent-minded Naylor produced something far different and far more rich--a stunning collection of over a thousand photographs that document a rarely seen period in Brazilian history. Accompanied by analysis from Robert M. Levine, this selection of Naylor's photographs offers a unique view of everyday life during one of modern Brazil's least-examined decades. Clean copy.

The New Bourgeoisie and the Limits of Dependency: Mining, Class, and Power in Revolutionary Peru
by: Becker, David G.

Softcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 1983, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 419 pages. The author clarifies the mutually constructive relationship between transnational and the modernizing Peruvian state, showing how the state maintains this relationship while simultaneously nurturing the new class. This book presents a useful analysis of Peru's mining sector in the post-1968 period. It has four sections: background on Peruvian mining and the international market; the role of transnational mining corporations in Peru; the characteristics of the domestically owned mining sector; and a class analysis of the mining bourgeoisie and proletariat. Although these chapters are mostly based on secondary sources, that material is supplemented by interviews conducted by Becker and some limited access to company and government documents. A particularly interesting section is a comparative analysis of the two major foreign firms in Peruvian mining: Cerro de Pasco and Southern Peru Copper Corporation. Useful detail is also supplied on the development of the main government mining corporation, Mineroperu. In addition, Becker provides a careful class analysis of the "new bourgeoisie" in social, economic, and political terms. Included are discussions of education, career patterns, and guild associations as well as of ideology. Clean copy.

To Weave and Sing: Art, Symbol, and Narrative in the South American Rainforest
by: David M. M. Guss

Softcover. Berkeley CA, University of California Press, 1st pbk., 1990, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 273 pages, b&w illustrations. The first in-depth analysis of the rich spiritual and artistic traditions of the Carib-speaking Yekuana Indians of Venezuela, who live in the dense rain forest of the upper Orinoco. Within their homeland of Ihuruna, the Yekuana have succeeded in maintaining the integrity and unity of their culture, resisting the devastating effects of acculturation that have befallen so many neighboring groups. Yet their success must be attributed to more than natural barriers of rapids and waterfalls, to more than lack of "contact" with our "modern" world. The ethnographic history recounted here includes not only the Spanish discovery of the Yekuana but detailed indigenous accounts of the entire history of Yekuana contact with Western culture, revealing an adaptive technique of mythopoesis by which the symbols of a new and hostile European ideology have been consistently defused through their incorporation into traditional indigenous structures. To Weave for the Sun
by: Stone-Miller, Rebecca

Softcover. Boston, Museum of Fine Arts, 1st, 1992, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 271 pages illustrated in color and b&w. Textiles were the Incas' most prized possessions. Their first gifts to European strangers were made not of gold and silver, but of camelid fibre and cotton. They believed that the highest form of weaving was created expressly for the sun, which they considered the greatest of the celestial powers. This book uses this image to symbolize Andean tradition as a whole and documents the collection of ancient and Colonial Andean textiles in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which is among the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. Described and illustrated here, in many cases for the first time are the finest examples from the collection: weavings of astonishing virtuosity with striking geometric designs, elaborate carpets and covers, mantles, tunics, featherwork, woven shoes with metal decoration and intriguing figural sculptures with tapestry faces - representing the major cultures of the pre-Columbian period as well as the achievements of Spanish Colonial times. Mild wear to outer wraps, otherwise a clean, bright copy.

Tren al Sol / Train to the Sun: Travesias Abordo Del Ferrocarril De Vapor Mas Dificil Del Mundo / Journey on Board the Most Difficult Steam Railroad in the World
by:

Hardcover. Trama Editorial; Bilingual edition, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 130 pages. Train to the Sun.-Understanding how a steam locomotive works is like watching the energy of boiling water by lifting the lid of a pan. The fuel (oil, coal stone or wood) is burned in the firebox, it heats the water in the boiler and makes steam, which in turn nourishes the cylinders linked to a piston. An exciting historical and cultural journey, with a spectacular photography that shows us the path of "the most difficult train in the world." A profile of one of the world's last operating steam trains in Ecuador. Text in Spanish and English.

Trials of Nation Making: Liberalism, Race, and Ethnicity in the Andes, 1810??"1910
by: Brooke Larson

Softcover. UK, Cambridge University Press, reprint, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 299 pages, b&w illustrations. Brooke Larson's interpretive analysis of the history of Andean peasants reveals the challenges of nation making in the republics of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia during the volatile nineteenth century. Nowhere in Latin America were postcolonial transitions more turbulent than in the Andes, where communal indigenous roots grew deep and where the "Indian problem" seemed so discouraging to liberalizing states. The analysis raises broader issues about the interplay of liberalism, racism, and ethnicity in the formation of exclusionary "republics without citizens" over the nineteenth century.

Vivir la Muerte: Living With Death in Latin America
by: Schmidt, Bastienne/Karl Steinorth, et al.

Hardcover. France Loisirs , 1st, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 144 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Bastienne Schmidt's photographs are images of both life and death. Mercilessly direct, these pictures from Latin America - the fruits of intensive work over the past few years - bring to an existential fact of our lives, a truth we in western societies are only too happy to hide behind a facade of casual diversions and consumable "beauty"; the immediate presence of death. It takes courage to look at these pictures, for in the faces of these people from another culture we are confronted, violently and with an authenticity we cannot ignore, with the very destiny we refuse to accept. Moreover, Bastienne Schmidt shows us the naked truth that underlies not only our inability to look our own death in the face, but also our tendency to disregard the violent deaths of others, failing to recognize the value of "mere" life as we do, so long as they die far enough away from our own doorsteps.
