Hardcover. Boston, David R. Godine, 2nd Ed., 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 109 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Vibrant color illustrations throughout. This retrospective volume is not intended to illustrate a particular story, but to display the full range of her abilities, and it is arranged according to the seasons she celebrates in her art. There are fifty of her hand-colored woodcuts in full color and an equal number in black and white. The book is large format because that is the way she works and that's what does her work justice. Lewis Carroll's Alice: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (The Pennyroyal Edition as designed and illustrated by Barry Moser)
by: Lewis Carroll; Barry Moser (Designer &

Hardcover. Berkeley CA, University of California Press, 1st trade, 1982, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 146 pages. In "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" the "calculated pandemonium" of the splendidly irrational kingdom of Wonderland is what Barry Moser set out to capture in illustrating the Lewis Carroll classic. In his seventy-five wood engravings, Moser depicts with consummate invention, wit, and skill the quite exceptional inhabitants and sights of Wonderland-the March Hare, the Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat's grin-as reviewed through Alice's eyes. The result is startlingly original.

Origins of the Chinese Avant-Garde: The Modern Woodcut Movementby: Xiaobing Tang

Origins of the Chinese Avant-Garde: The Modern Woodcut Movement
by: Xiaobing Tang

Hardcover. Berkeley CA, University of California Press, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 318 pages. In Origins of the Chinese Avant-Garde, Xiaobing Tang studies the art and art theories of the first half of the twentieth century, when modern Chinese art and literature emerged. He argues that the most consequential expression of the avant-garde was the modern woodcut movement that thrived in China in the 1930s. In this innovative study--also the first comprehensive account of this Chinese movement available in English--Tang examines the aesthetic, intellectual, and social appeal of the modern woodcut and places the movement at the intersection of historical events, individual efforts, and competing discourses on art. He also shows how the woodcut movement drew upon international inspiration--from German Expressionism, Soviet wood engravings, and Japanese creative prints.

PAUL GAUGUIN : THE PRINTSby: Prelinger, Elizabeth

PAUL GAUGUIN : THE PRINTS
by: Prelinger, Elizabeth

Hardcover. New York , Prestel, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 160 pages. Color illustration to front cover. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Universally revered as one of the founding fathers of modern painting, Paul Gauguin was also an accomplished printer. Working mostly in woodcuts, he translated his fascination with life in the South Seas into pieces of extraordinary beauty and simplicity. This volume presents the three print series that Gauguin created: a dozen zinc etchings made in 1889; his most famous series, the partially hand-tinted woodcuts created for his famed book Noa Noa, which were made after Gauguin's first trip to Tahiti; and a third series of woodcuts completed during his second stay on the island. This small printed oeuvre demonstrates how the medium was an ideal outlet for Gauguin's experimental and audacious artistry.

The Old Man Mad about Drawing: A Tale of Hokusaiby: Place, Francois

The Old Man Mad about Drawing: A Tale of Hokusai
by: Place, Francois

Hardcover. Boston, David R. Godine, 3rd pr., 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Tojiro, a nine-year-old orphan, sells rice cakes on the streets of 19th-century Edo, the bustling city we now call Tokyo. One of his customers is the grumpy, eccentric octogenarian Hokusai. The old man takes a liking to Tojiro, and soon employs him as his assistant. The boy's ignorance provides a convenient vehicle for introducing the artist's life and work. Much of the dialogue and action is written for the purpose of conveying information about Hokusai, as well as the technique of woodblock printing and the social customs of Edo. The book's greatest strength is not the text, but the art that enlivens every page. A combination of the author's watercolors and reproductions of Hokusai's drawings and woodblock prints, the illustrations are arranged in enticing and varied page designs.
