Oliver Mark: Portraits
by: Mark, Oliver

Hardcover. Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 189 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Art icon Jeff Koons lying on a giant plastic ball, Richard Serra disappearing into one of his vast steel sculptures, "king of theater" Claus Peymann sporting a cardboard crown ever since shooting his portrait of painter A.R. Penck in 1994, Oliver Mark (born 1963) has photographed countless artists, actors, politicians and other celebrities. Sometimes concentrating only on the subject against the most minimal setting possible, sometimes placing them in front of an artful background, Mark presents the rich and famous in constantly new and consistently trenchant ways, bringing their less apparent characteristics to light and casting them in disorienting circumstances. Other of Mark's subjects included here are Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, George Lucas, Sir Ridley Scott, Jenny Holzer, Mia Farrow, Norbert Tadeusz, Kenny Scharf, Georg Baselitz, David Chipperfield, Luc Tuymans, Cate Blanchett, Balthus and Sir Peter Ustinov. Besides Mark's most successful portraits, this volume also contains some of his most beautiful fashion photographs and other stills, many of which have appeared in several well-known magazines. Texts by Margit J. Mayer, Christoph Amend, Christian Boros and others round off this entertaining "best-of" collection.

Olympic Portraitsby: Leibovitz, Annie

Olympic Portraits
by: Leibovitz, Annie

Hardcover. Boston, Bulfinch/Little Brown, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards. 180 b/w photos of athletes in preparation for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. A celebrated, highly stylized photographer of rock stars shooting Olympic athletes? That apparent anomaly seems just right when the photographer in question is Leibovitz, whose portraiture has always managed to capture the inner turmoil lurking beneath outward calm. Wisely, she chose to shoot her athletes not in Atlanta, surrounded by hoopla, but in preparation for the games, isolated and intense. The results are stunning: a sculpted Carl Lewis in repose, achieving a Mapplethorpian elegance mixed with menace; a poised and incredibly focused Michael Johnson, suggesting all the unleashed energy it would take to run faster than anyone has ever run before; a sober U.S. women's softball team, exuding the determination that would eventually produce wild jubilation and the gold medal. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

On the Beach: Chance Portraits from Two Shores
by: Douglas McCulloh and Jacques Garnier

Hardcover. Daytona Beach FL, Southeast Museum of Photography, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 152 pages with 69 color plates. Like new in publishers shrink-wrap. The memorable and sometimes aggressive photographic portraits of On The Beach are the result of a six year project by two well-known photographers, Douglas McCulloh and Jacques Garnier. They placed a studio lighting setup directly in the sand, making California and Florida beaches their backdrop. The beach eliminates conceits, concealment, and clothing. People who cross onto the sand become a little naked. To this equation of vulnerability, the two photographers add unforgiving strobe lights and a ruthless high resolution camera.

Oxford Project, The
by: Feldstein, Peter (Photographer)

Paperback. New York, Welcome Books, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 287 pages. Hardcover with no dust jacket. A very clean, unmarked copy with only minor edgewear. Holographic photograph on front cover. In 1984, photographer Peter Feldstein set out to photograph every single resident of his town, Oxford, Iowa (pop. 676). He converted an abandoned storefront on Main Street into a makeshift studio and posted fliers inviting people to stop by. At first they trickled in slowly, but in the end, nearly all of Oxford stood before Feldstein's lens. Twenty years later, Feldstein decided to do it again. Only this time he invited writer Stephen G. Bloom to join him, and together they went in search of the same Oxford residents Feldstein had originally shot two decades earlier. Some had moved. Most had stayed. Others had passed away. All were marked by the passage of time.

Patti Smith: American Artist
by: Frank Stefanko, Patti Smith, et al.

Softcover. Insight Editions, reprint, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 164 pages. A stunning collection of photographs from Frank Stefanko featuring the Godmother of Punk herself, iconic musician and author Patti Smith. "There I was sitting in a booth at the co-op of Glassboro State College, a bucolic school in the farmlands of South Jersey. . . Suddenly, the double doors of the co-op swung open and standing there in the vacuum created was an incredible apparition, a vision in a white leather coat with long, jet-black hair flowing down her back. She moseyed in like the bad guy walking into a saloon in an old western movie. This was the first time I set eyes on Patti Smith, and I was captivated." So begins Frank Stefanko's wonderfully personal photographic tale of his friendship and artistic collaboration with Patti Smith. Stefanko's photographs and his warm, personal recollections show us an amazing young woman, long before she became Patti Smith, the cultural icon. Through images and words, we follow her search for a unique voice--from the early days of the Chelsea Hotel to spoken word at the St. Mark's Poetry Project to the release of her seminal album, Horses, and so much more.

Perfect Intimacyby: Lili Almog

Perfect Intimacy
by: Lili Almog

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse Books, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 127 pages. Lili Almog's color photos taken at three Carmelite monasteries (of nuns) are revealing of their faith.. The sisters showing their distinctive profession crucifixes (normally worn hidden under their scapulars, and pinned to their beds when they go to sleep) are revealing their personal symbols of "perfect intimacy." And the statues and/or holy cards of our holy mother St. Teresa, our holy father St. John of the Cross, St. Therese, and St. Joseph make Carmelites feel right at home. The monasteries are also significant: they are on Mt. Carmel (Haifa) and in Bethlehem--founded by Sister Miriam, "the little Arab"; and in Port Tobacco, Maryland, whose community is the oldest and first Discalced Carmelite convent founded in the US. The spartan surroundings emphasize the importance of the nuns' relationship with God. The photos of the sisters revealing their profession crucifixes, which they wear near their hearts and pin to their beds when going to sleep, I found especially moving. Almog's photos are neither stilted nor rigid, but reminiscent of the photos that St. Therese's sister Celine took of her! The quotations from Blessed Teresa of the Andes are very apt comments on the photos.

by: Lacoste, Anne (Editor)

Hardcover. US, Prestel, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 304 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. This massive retrospective volume profiles the work of Philippe Halsman, one of the world's most revered photographers. Comprising hundreds of photographs and insightful accompanying texts, this volume explores Halsman's oeuvre in a variety of aspects. It examines his early career exhibiting works at the avant-garde La Pleiade Gallery in Paris; his experiments with portraiture, particularly the series of stunning images of Marilyn Monroe and his more than 100 covers for Life magazine; his pictures of the contemporary art scene that include famous dancers, movie stars, stage actors, and musicians and the birth of his "jumpology" concept; and his unique, 30-year collaboration with Salvador Dali, including a book devoted entirely to the artist's moustache. Anyone interested in portraiture, celebrity, or performance will marvel at the breadth and magnificence of Halsman's work, which is definitively presented in this beautiful volume.

Hardcover. Gottingen GR, Steidl, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 412 pages without dust jacket. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Seydou Keita was born in Bamako, Mali in 1921, then part of the colony of French Sudan and a bustling transportation hub on the route to Dakar. With a Kodak Brownie given to him by his uncle, Keita took up photography at the age of fourteen, going on to establish what would become Bamako's most successful portraiture enterprise of the 1950s and 60s. Photographs, Bamako, Mali 1949-1970 draws on an expanded archive to offer over 400 portraits, mostly unpublished, from the height of the photographer's productivity in downtown Bamako. Providing lushly patterned backdrops and props that now serve to date distinct periods in his career, the artist often styled his subjects but also encouraged their active participation, hanging sample portraits around the studio as inspiration. Migratory youth, government officials, shop owners and Bamako's cultural elite all make appearances here, and while Keita's photographs served as both family record and cultural status symbol for the clients who commissioned them, these images have become a lasting visual record of Mali at that time. Pirkle Jones - California Photographs 1935-1982by: Jones, Pirkle

Pirkle Jones - California Photographs 1935-1982
by: Jones, Pirkle

Hardcover. New York, Aperture , 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good , Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 144 pages, B&W photos. In original shrink wrap. For almost sixty years Pirkle Jones has chronicled the people, politics, and landscape of Northern California-a "promised land" which has long held sway in the American cultural imagination. Within the confines of that locale, he has unearthed a universe of beauty and meaning, photographing everything from flea-market finds to some of the most important American social movements of the second half of the twentieth century. Operating primarily within a social-documentary framework, Jones has made images characterized by sensitivity and acute observation. With uncanny prescience, a sense of urgency, and a sympathetic eye, Jones often plays the dual roles of artist and witness, combining portraiture, landscapes, and architectural photographs to create thorough documents of social structure and upheaval. Among the photo-essays included in Pirkle Jones: California Photographs are a compassionate and controversial piece on the Black Panther Party in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jones's portraits of the Sausalito houseboat community known as Gate 5, and a notable 1956 photo-essay done in collaboration with Dorothea Lange photographing the destruction and dislocation of the Berryessa Valley before it was flooded on completion of the Monticello Dam. Produced as a single issue of Aperture magazine in 1960 under the name "Death of a Valley", this essay remains a powerful testament to the price of progress. The book also includes Jones's work from the last few decades, in which he shifted his focus to an extended series of elegant, contemplative landscapes. A biographical essay by curator Tim B. Wride frames Jones and his work within the context of photographic history, the people he collaborated with-including Ansel Adams as well as Lange-and the great scope of Californian life.

Plates and Dishes: The Food and Faces of the Roadside Dinerby: Schacher, Stephan

Plates and Dishes: The Food and Faces of the Roadside Diner
by: Schacher, Stephan

Softcover. New York, Princeton Architectural Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 160 pages, color plates throughout. The blue plate special, meatloaf, a cheeseburger deluxe, a milkshake in a frosty mixing canister, a hot cup of joe--all served by a friendly face in a well-lighted aluminum tube. Such are the special joys of the American diner. And it was just these pleasures that photographer Stephan Schacher set out to document when he left New York on a journey through North America that would test both his stomach and his resolve. Schacher's mission: to feed his hunger only at diners, and to photograph both his meal and his server every time. The result is a unique and deeply human story--quirky and nostalgic and generous--of one man's quest to discover North America's diner culture and his own place in it. Traveling from a Jersey diner to the Canadian Rockies to a shoreside clambake shack on the Pacific Ocean, Schacher's culinary adventure is documented here with a wealth of visual materials. The author's arresting photographs of succulent steaks and greasy fries, of smiling waitresses in uniforms or jeans, and brightly colored plastic dishes and table mats are supplemented by maps showing the photographer's route across the continent.

PoPsie: American Popular Music Through The Camera Lens of William "PoPsie" Randolphby: Randolph, Michael

PoPsie: American Popular Music Through The Camera Lens of William "PoPsie" Randolph
by: Randolph, Michael

Hardcover. Hal Leonard Corporation, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 226 pages. Haunting the recording studios, jam sessions, concert halls, and nightclubs of New York City, William "PoPsie" Randolph chronicled the postwar transformation of American music from swing and jazz, to rhythm & blues and rock n' roll. The 100,000 negatives left behind after his death in 1978 span the giddy, glitzy heyday of swing in the 1940s, the hot and cool jazz spawned in the clubs of 52nd Street, the rumbling emergence of black R&B and doo-wop, the sudden explosion of rock n' roll in the late '50s, the rise of Brill Building pop and the British Invasion of the '60s, and the growth of rock into a multibillion-dollar industry by the '70s. PoPsie's son Michael has chosen the very best of his father's collection for inclusion in this remarkable book. Here readers will find luscious black-and-white photos of everyone from Benny Goodman and Billie Holiday to Elvis, The Beatles, Hendrix, and the Rolling Stones. Insightful text explains the time, people, and place of each captured moment.

Portrait of the Art World: A Century of ARTnews Photographsby: William F. Stapp

Portrait of the Art World: A Century of ARTnews Photographs
by: William F. Stapp

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press , 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 184 pages. ARTnews, the oldest art magazine in America and the most widely circulated art magazine in the world, is celebrating its one-hundredth anniversary in 2002. This attractive book celebrates and commemorates this milestone event, presenting one hundred of the best photographic portraits commissioned by and reproduced in the magazine since its origin. These fascinating photographs chronicle the history of the magazine and present a "who's who" of people who have shaped the art world over the last century. Portrait of the Art World includes photographs of many of the great European and American artists of the twentieth century, including George Bellows, Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, Jackson Pollock, Alexander Calder, and Alice Neel. The photographers-often as fascinating as their subjects-range from Zaida Ben-Yusuf, Alice Boughton (early members of Alfred Stieglitz's circle), and Jessie Tarbox Beals (perhaps the first woman photojournalist) to Stieglitz himself, Man Ray, and Cecil Beaton. Contemporary photographers featured in the book include Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, Arnold Newman, Richard Avedon, and Robert Mapplethorpe. The book also presents an essay by William F. Stapp exploring the historical context of portrait photography in ARTnews; an essay on the history of ARTnews by Pete Hamill; and an essay by Milton Esterow, the current editor and publisher of ARTnews, discussing his personal view of the magazine. This handsomely illustrated book is the catalogue for an exhibition at the New-York Historical Society from September 27, 2002, to January 5, 2003, which will then travel to Washington, Chicago, and San Francisco
