Hotel LaChapelleby: David LaChapelle

Hotel LaChapelle
by: David LaChapelle

Hardcover. Boston, Bulfinch / Little Brown, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover. Large folio in color printed thick glossy boards in color printed thick glossy card box. LaChapelle offers readers insight into the book and his photographic process: "And when people come for a photo session with me, they are giving themselves over, sort of checking in. When you stay at a hotel you're living for one day in a place where you don't normally live. That feeling can be true with photographs, too." LaChapelle's photographs can be spotted a mile away. If you read magazines, you know his work: it jumps out like none other with the expertly created environments and alternate realities in which he places his subjects. These universes are complete and constantly evolving to fit dynamic personalities. Hotel LaChapelle is filled with a celebrity cast as well as what LaChapelle calls "characters on the peripheries." The colors are as vibrant and inorganic as the settings that encapsulate his models. In this world, heads are sewn onto different-colored bodies, a nurse holds a face with a pair of tweezers, Marilyn Manson works as a school crossing guard, Madonna is a Krishna goddess, Leonard DiCaprio becomes Marlon Brando, and Ewan McGregor's face peers into a dollhouse while his body bleeds from a gunshot wound fired from Barbie's diminutive gun. The list goes on, and what it says about LaChapelle's vision is that excess is never too much. Clean, bright copy. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

Hubert's Freaks: The Rare-Book Dealer, the Times Square Talker, and the Lost Photos of Diane Arbusby: Gibson, Gregory

Hubert's Freaks: The Rare-Book Dealer, the Times Square Talker, and the Lost Photos of Diane Arbus
by: Gibson, Gregory

Hardcover. NY, Harcourt, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 288 pages. From the late 1950s until her death in 1971, renowned photographer Diane Arbus took pictures of oddball performers at the now-forgotten Hubert's Museum, a typical freak show in New York City's seedy Times Square. One frequent subject was Charlie Lucas, first a freak himself, later an inside talker. In 2003, Bob Langmuir, an anxiety-ridden, pill-popping, obsessive antiquarian book dealer from Philadelphia, unearthed a collection of photographs and memorabilia, including Lucas's journals and what he thought were Arbus's photos. This trove of genuine American kookiness came to dominate his life. Following Langmuir's quest--from the slums of Philadelphia to the halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art--as he gathered, priced and ultimately came to understand this collection, author Gibson (Gone Boy: A Walkabout), himself an antiquarian book dealer, effortlessly twists these strands together with an emotional wallop. His toil in Hubert's vineyard, Gibson writes of Langmuir, amounted to no more or less than the continuing archaeology of the old, weird America. Gibson's laser focus on Langmuir's shifting state of mind as he struggles to master his personal demons and navigate the pitfalls of his own obsession gives this story its heart and opens a window onto a lost part of the American soul. 21 b&w photos.

Immediate Family by: Sally Mann

Immediate Family
by: Sally Mann

Softcover. NY, Aperture Foundation, 5th pr., 1992, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, oblong format, b&w plates. Afterward by Reynolds Price. Mann's controversial third book. "Mann's subjects are her small children (a boy, a girl and a new baby), often shot when they're sick or hurt or just naked. Nosebleeds, cuts, hives, chicken pox, swollen eyes, vomiting -- the usual trials of childhood -- can be alarmingly beautiful, thrillingly sensual moments in Mann's portrait album. Her ambivalence about motherhood -- her delight and despair -- pushes Mann to delve deeper into the steaming mess of family life than most of us are willing to go. What she comes up with is astonishing. "-- Vince Aletti, The Village Voice. Clean copy.

Infantaby: Ralph Gibson

Infanta
by: Ralph Gibson

Hardcover. Takarajima Books, 1st, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 119 pages. The female nude has long been an important subject for photographer Gibson, but in earlier books, his nudes appeared as elements in sequences of all kinds of images. With Infanta, Gibson abandons the sequencing, presenting instead a collection of big, rather simplified black-and-white images. Like Lee Friedlander in his Nudes (1991), in middle age Gibson expresses an intense fascination with the bodies of young women. Whereas Friedlander used the camera to awkwardly describe specific details, Gibson uses his to idealize beautiful body fragments. Gibson's high-contrast, grainy printing style and abstract compositions have hardly changed in two decades. Alexandra Anderson-Spivy's accompanying essay perceptively responds to Gibson's work, but Mary Gaitskill's vulgar afterword (the memoir of a stripper) seems jarringly inappropriate to the idealism of the photographs.

Inge Morath: On Style
by: Jacob, John P., Introduction: Picardie, Ms. Justine

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 288 pages. Witty, playful, and effortlessly chic, Inge Morath: On Style reveals the vital forms of fashion and self-expression that blossomed into existence in England, France, and the United States in the postwar decades. The book follows the photojournalist Inge Morath (1923-2002) through intimate sessions with Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn; scenes of window-shopping on Fifth Avenue; American girls discovering Paris; the frenetic splendor of society balls; and working women--from actresses to seamstresses to writers--everywhere taking their place in the world. The photographs in On Style focus on an extraordinary period of Morath's creativity, from the early 1950s to mid- 1960s, with a coda of work from later years. Here are the fundamental humanism, joy, and unerring eye for life's brilliant theatricality that characterized her work and made her one of the most celebrated photographers of her time. Clean copy. It's All That Glitters: Portraits of Burlesque Performers in Their Homesby: Janes, Brian C.

It's All That Glitters: Portraits of Burlesque Performers in Their Homes
by: Janes, Brian C.

Hardcover. Atglen PA, Schiffer, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 216 pages, color photographs by Janes. What is burlesque? Who better to ask than burlesque performers themselves? With this question in mind, the author traveled over 14,000 miles across the United States visiting today's burlesque performers, photographing them in their homes, and asking them: "What does burlesque mean to you?" Their answers and 104 accompanying portraits may surprise you. For these performers, burlesque is so many things, including fun and empowerment on stage, an escape from life's doldrums, a fantasy, a career. This book also presents a study in contrasts between the public persona of each performer and that performer's private life.

Jacob A. Riis: Revealing New York's Other Half: A Complete Catalogue of His Photographs
by: Bonnie Yochelson

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2015, Hardcover with a bright dust jacket, oblong format, 336 pages. 25 color, 375 duotone + 210 b/w illustrations. This important publication is the first comprehensive study and complete catalogue of Riis's world-famous images, and places him at the forefront of early-20th-century social reform photography. It is the culmination of more than two decades of research on Riis, assembling materials from five repositories (the Riis Collection at the Museum of the City of New York, the Library of Congress, the New-York Historical Society, the New York Public Library, and the Museum of South West Jutland, Denmark) as well as previously unpublished photographs and notes. In this handsome volume, Bonnie Yochelson proposes a novel thesis--that Riis was a radical publicist who utilized photographs to enhance his arguments, but had no great skill or ambition as a photographer. She also provides important context for understanding how Riis's work would be viewed in turn-of-the-century New York, whether presented in lantern slide lectures or newspapers. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

James Dean: Fifty Years Ago
by: Dennis Stock and Joe Hyams

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 128 pages. Although Stock has been associated with Magnum Photos since 1951 and his work has been collected in numerous books (California Trip; Jazz Street), he remains best known for his unforgettable b&w photographs of Dean, which soared beyond routine celebrity shots. Stock's photo essay in Life, "Moody New Star," attracted attention the same week East of Eden opened in 1955, and in the years since, his photos of Dean have resurfaced in magazines, books and exhibitions. Published on the 50th anniversary of Dean's death, this collection of 80 duotones recaptures the few weeks in 1954 Stock spent with the actor in New York and his Fairmount, Ind., hometown before the two flew back to L.A. for the filming of Rebel Without a Cause. Hyams (James Dean: Little Boy Lost) calls the haunting shot of Dean alone in a rainy Times Square "one of the foremost iconic images of the 20th century." A surreal scene at the Fairmount farm shows Dean banging bongo drums for an audience of cows and pigs, and a peek inside an Actors Studio session is a rarity since Lee Strasberg "almost never let anyone photograph his classes." Stock's own brief memoir of his friendship with Dean is well written, evocative and insightful.

James Moore: Photographs 1962-2006
by: Martin Harrison (Author), Holly Brubach (Author), Nicolas Moore (Editor), James Moore (Photographer)

Bologna, Damiani, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 280 pages. American fashion photographer James Moore (1936-2006) was an influential voice in mid-20th-century fashion photography, working for Harper's Bazaar during its 1960s heyday under the leadership of legendary editor Carmel Snow. Shooting languid mod gamines and luxe bohemians in arresting, often surreal or cinematic compositions, Moore helped shape the visual vocabulary of '60s fashion alongside better-known colleagues such as art director Alexey Brodovitch (under whom Moore studied). Moore also directed television commercials and contributed photographs to European magazines in the 1980s and 1990s, and taught photography at the School of Visual Arts, New York, and the Rochester Institute of Technology. Every Moore photograph is an intricate exploration of space and beauty, with an attention to detail that betrays the photographer's peerless eye. Something of a "photographer's photographer," Moore influenced the next generation of great fashion photographers but has been somewhat neglected in histories of 1960s fashion and culture--until now. James Moore: Photographs 1962-2006 collects a half century of extraordinary photographs by Moore, the first time his work has been collected in a single monograph. Including texts from the leading editors, models, photographers and designers of the day, this volume takes stock of James Moore's astounding career and an extraordinary cultural moment.

Jean Howard's Hollywood: A Photo Memoir
by: Howard, Jean/James Watters

Hardcover. NY, Harry N Abrams, 1st, 1989, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 248 pages. B&w photos throughout. Jean Howard was a small part Hollywood actress in the late 30s/early 40s whose marriage to super agent Charles Feldman gave her an entry into the top circles of Hollywood away from the studios. She carried her camera with her everywhere and thus we get hundreds of photographs of Hollywood royalty at play right up until the Sixties both at home and mixing with high society in Europe. Although not especially gifted as a photographer her access to the stars was unprecedented and her candid snaps are fascinating for students of Tinseltown at play. Thus we get the likes of Tyrone Power playing croquet with Howard Hawks and Daryl Zanuck and Jennifer Jones leading a conga line of party guests fully clothed into Joseph Cotten's swimming pool. The photographs in this coffee table sized book are accompanied by short but informative comments identifying the participants and giving snippets of fascinating gossip. Recommended for fans of Hollywood's studio era.

Kings in Their Castles: Photographs of Queer Men at Home
by: Tom Atwood and Charles Kaiser

Hardcover. University of Wisconsin Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 92 pages. Kings in Their Castles, a collective portrait of the gay urban community in America, offers a personal view of some of our leading artists, writers, filmmakers, composers, musicians, and designers. Among the celebrities Atwood photographs in their playful, revealing homes are Edward Albee, Todd Oldham, John Waters, Ross Bleckner, Joel Schumacher, Junior Vasquez, Michael Cunningham, Simon Doonan, Andrew Solomon, Ned Rorem, James Dale, David Del Tredici, Tommy Tune, John Ashbery, Edmund White, and John Bartlett. Atwood also documents the bohemians, beatniks, mavericks, and iconoclasts, an urban community that is slowly disappearing. Capturing whimsical, intimate moments of daily life and portraying the complexity and diversity of this loosely linked society, Atwood reveals some of the most intriguing characters and homes in gay America. These beautiful fine art prints--shifting between the pictorial and the theatrical--become both a witness and a celebration.

Hardcover. New York, D.A.P./Distributed Art Publishers, Inc., 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. 168 pages. 84 black and white photos. Edited by: Sharon Helgason Gallagher. "Lee Friedlander`s exploration of one of photography`s most enduring genres began almost by chance, in the late 1970s, when a teacher colleague at Rice University in Houston lined up a regular schedule of nude models for his students. Almost immediately, Friedlander found that he preferred to photograph the models at their homes, and ingeniously deployed household objects such as bedside lamps, potted plants and sofa fabrics to play off against the angular poses of the models and the emphatic framing of the overall composition.
