by: Scott, Joanna

Hardcover. New York, Simon & Schuster, 1st, 1990, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 283 pages, SIGNED BY AUTHOR on title page. Spotless and tight copy. In Joanna Scott's breakthrough novel Arrogance, the Austrian artist Egon Schiele comes to prismatic life in a narrative that defies convention, history, and identity. A self-professed genius and student of August Klimt, Scott's Schiele repeatedly challenges the boundaries of early twentieth-century Europe. Thrown in jail on charges of immorality, Schiele's Mephistophelean reputation only grows in stature until at the age of twenty-eight, the artist dies in the Great Flu Pandemic. Told from a crosscurrent of voices, viewpoints and times, this stunning novel won Scott a nomination for the 1991 PEN/Faulkner Award.

ART OF ROBERT CREMEAN, THE : Selected Works, 1952-2005 (SIGNED COPY)
by: Shields, Scott A.; ROBERT CREMEAN

Softcover. Sacramento CA, Crocker Art Museum, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 47 pages, illustrated throughout in color. SIGNED BY ARTIST on front end paper. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to wrappers. Robert Cremean (1932 - Present) is a sculptor (and occasional painter) born in Ohio, now based in Tomales Bay, California. Cremean does superlative figurative work. However, he has largely isolated himself from the American art mainstream to the extent that any showing is a considerable rarity. He's developed, via a benefactor, an "arrangement" with the Fresno Art Museum whereby it displays most of his new work. This book is from a show at the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, in 2005. Now 88, Cremean was early--and unsurprisingly-- influenced by medieval art, particularly the illuminated Chaucer manuscript at the Huntington Library. "I was amazed at the way the words and pictures met one another on the page." Most of his painted words are transcribed from his own notebooks.

As She Climbed Across the Table (SIGNED COPY)
by: Lethem, Jonathan

Hardcover. New York, Doubleday, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 212 pages, SIGNED BY AUTHOR on title page. Spotless and tight copy in a bright dust jacket. Philip is in love with Alice. As the novel opens, he is beginning to lose her. Not to another man, as he fears, but to, literally, nothing. Alice is a physicist, and a team at the University where both she and Philip work has created a hole, a vacuum, a doorway of nothingness inside the laboratory. They call it "Lack." Alice becomes obsessed with Lack, as Philip is obsessed by Alice. The novel is at the same time an astute and wise portrait of unrequited love (albeit of a very unusual kind) a hilarious academic parody, a novel of ideas and a social satire. It is utterly original, but in the school of Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, Katherine Dunn, and David Foster Wallace.

Awful Ogre Running Wild (SIGNED COPY)by: Jack Prelutsky and Paul O. Zelinsky

Awful Ogre Running Wild (SIGNED COPY)
by: Jack Prelutsky and Paul O. Zelinsky

Hardcover. NY, Greenwillow, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 40 pages, color illustrations by Paul Zelinsky. SIGNED BY BOTH AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR. The huge but rather childlike character featured in Prelutsky and Zelinsky's Awful Ogre's Awful Day (2001) returns in a new volume of light verse accomplanied by full-page and double-page illustrations. Taking place during the one-eyed ogre's summer vacation, the first-person poems run the gamut from somewhat gross ("Awful Ogre Has Insomnia") to droll ("Awful Ogre Attends a Concert") to tenderhearted ("Awful Ogre Pays a Visit") to sublime ("Awful Ogre Goes Dragon-Watching"). Prelutsky shows his sure sense of rhythm and rhyme as well as his child-pleasing sense of humor in this series of 17 clearly written poems. Most appear on double-page spreads, accompanied by large ink-and-watercolor illustrations that reflect the tone of the verse. Highlighting the barely controlled chaos of this amiable ogre's world, the pictures create a visually imaginative setting where anything can happen and, in the fun-to-discover details, something often does.

Baaa (SIGNED COPY)by: Macaulay, David

Baaa (SIGNED COPY)
by: Macaulay, David

Hardcover. Boston, Houghton Mifflin Books for Children, 1st, 1985, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover. SIGNED BY MACAULAY on half title page. Dust jacket price-clipped. Borrowing from themes of George Orwell's Animal Farm in 1943 and the 1973 movie Soylent Green, David Macaulay's children's book Baaa draws parallels to these stories with demonstrations of matters of overpopulation, resource depletion, social hierarchies, and consumption by depicting sheep evolving to a point of self destruction. The post-apocalyptic storytelling evident in Baaa is reminiscent of Macaulay's earlier work titled "Motel of the Mysteries" in which twentieth century civilization as we know it has ceased to exist. The combination of intellectually savvy text with rich pen and ink drawings complement his analysis of societal ills while supporting a solid body of work.

by: Ohlin, Alix

Hardcover. NY, Knopf, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Following The Missing Person, her highly praised debut--"A seriously entertaining and probing novel," wrote The Washington Post Book World--Alix Ohlin gives us a collection of stories that demonstrates her impressive range. In their various locales, from Montreal (where a prosthetic leg casts a furious spell on its beholders) to the Southwest (where a Soviet-era exchange student changes a family's dynamic forever), the characters in Babylon are coming to terms with life's epiphanies, for good or ill. They range from the very young who, confronted with their parents' limitations, discover their own resolve, to those facing middle age and its particular indignities, no less determined to assert themselves and shape their destinies. A tenacious eight-year-old practices piano on paper keys; an expectant mother, settling into an idyllic farmhouse, discovers the tragic story of its previous, rightful inhabitants; and a fictional haunted hospital becomes an obsession for a ghostwriter grappling with her empty nest.
