Oscar Wilde's America: Counterculture in the Gilded Ageby: Blanchard, Ms. Mary Warner

Oscar Wilde's America: Counterculture in the Gilded Age
by: Blanchard, Ms. Mary Warner

Hardcover. New Haven, Yale University Press, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 302 pages, illustrated throughout in b&w. SIGNED BY AUTHOR on title page. Light sun-fade along dust jacket spine. Clean, tight copy. Touring America as the "Apostle of Aestheticism" in 1882, Oscar Wilde brought a witty and controversial message of regeneration through art and beauty to a nation still shaken by the trauma of the Civil War. In this book, the first cultural history of the aesthetic movement in the United States, Mary W. Blanchard shows that it was a wide-ranging popular movement resisted by the moral guardians of Victorianism but advanced by visionary women.

Oxbridge Men: British Masculinity and the Undergraduate Experience, 1850-1920 (SIGNED COPY)by: Deslandes, Paul R.

Oxbridge Men: British Masculinity and the Undergraduate Experience, 1850-1920 (SIGNED COPY)
by: Deslandes, Paul R.

Hardcover. Bloomington IN, Indiana University Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 317 pages with index, INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on front fly leaf. The mythic status of the Oxbridge man at the height of the British Empire continues to persist in depictions of this small, elite world as an ideal of athleticism, intellectualism, tradition, and ritual. In his investigation of the origins of this myth, Paul R. Deslandes explores the everyday life of undergraduates at Oxford and Cambridge to examine how they experienced manhood. He considers phenomena such as the dynamics of the junior common room, the competition of exams, and the social and athletic obligations of intercollegiate boat races to show how rituals, activities, relationships, and discourses all contributed to gender formation. Casting light on the lived experience of undergraduates, Oxbridge Men shows how an influential brand of British manliness was embraced, altered, and occasionally rejected as these students grew from boys into men. Painting Culture: The Making of an Aboriginal High Art (SIGNED COPY)by: Myers, Fred R.

Painting Culture: The Making of an Aboriginal High Art (SIGNED COPY)
by: Myers, Fred R.

Softcover. Durham NC, Duke University Press, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 410 pages, b&w, color illustrations. INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on the half-title page. Painting Culture tells the complex story of how, over the past three decades, the acrylic "dot" paintings of central Australia were transformed into objects of international high art, eagerly sought by upscale galleries and collectors. Since the early 1970s, Fred R. Myers has studied--often as a participant-observer--the Pintupi, one of several Aboriginal groups who paint the famous acrylic works. Describing their paintings and the complicated cultural issues they raise, Myers looks at how the paintings represent Aboriginal people and their culture and how their heritage is translated into exchangeable values. He tracks the way these paintings become high art as they move outward from indigenous communities through and among other social institutions--the world of dealers, museums, and critics.

Minor dust jacket edge wear and rub, otherwise, very clean and tight copy. The third book, a collection of eight short stories, by this Australian-American writer, one which is "a masterpiece of observation which clearly demonstrates the authors perceptive wit. Set in the 1950s, amidst the corridors and offices of the newly created monolithic and meandering bureaucracy of 'the Organization' (read the United Nations, where Hazzard worked for 10 years) an American-based concern intent on inflicting improvement the world over, readers are introduced to an immalleable world hemmed in by regulations, memoranda and mediocrity. A place where once vibrant personalities are smothered and strangulated by red tape, and the general life-sapping realities of paper-pushing and the exacting demands of pointless tasks reign paramount.

Peter and the Wolf (SIGNED COPY)
by: Raschka, Chris (after Prokofiev, Sergei)

Hardcover. NY, Atheneum, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, color illustrations by Raschka. Sergei Prokofiev composed his Peter and the Wolf in 1936 with the hope of introducing children to the instruments of the orchestra. It happens that he also devised a wonderfully dramatic story. The characters - boy, bird, duck, cat, grandfather, wolf, hunters - and their doings have been beloved by young and old for decades. Writer, artist, musician, and Caldecott Medalist Chris Raschka has given the original story a new setting: a stage performance. Here you will relish language inspired music; enjoy mischief, suspense, and triumph in the theater; and delight in a surprise (and an additional character) Prokofiev's merry tale didn't provide. Please do not turn immediately to the last page. SIGNED BY RASCHKA.

Philadelphia Merchant: The Diary of Thomas P. Cope, 1800-1851 by: Thomas P. Cope/Eliza Cope Harrison (Editor)

Philadelphia Merchant: The Diary of Thomas P. Cope, 1800-1851
by: Thomas P. Cope/Eliza Cope Harrison (Editor)

Hardcover. South Bend IN, Gateway Editions, 1st, 1978, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Fair, Hardcover in an edgeworn, unclipped dust jacket. INSCRIBED BY EDITOR HARRISON on the title page. 628 pages, b&w illustrations. Thomas Cope was a wealthy merchant and ship owner, a force in city and state government, a philanthropist and--by no means least--a Quaker. He is best described in his own words about his writing and himself: "I have laid down no regular plan and I follow none. My diary is like myself, a chequered maze." He was committed to the service of others--the poor, the sick, the insane--and labored to improve the civic life of Philadelphia in far-sighted ways. He was a moving force behind the water system, a founder of the Mercantile Library, an advocate for the Penn. Railroad, and a supporter of poorhouses, among many other civic and philanthropic activities. He was also a deeply passionate man, whose fluent style at times seethes with emotion. Even into his eighties he struggled to control his temper. Perceptive and intelligently engaged, Cope comments on all the major historical events of his time, such as the yellow fever epidemics, the War of 1812, and the looming Civil War, as well as the more personal dramas of his own life. Some tape repairs ro dj, clean copy.
