Athletes & Gymnasts (2 Volume Set)
by: AndersonJonathan; Low, Edwin

Hardcover. London, Twin Palms Publishers, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 192 pages. 2 volume set, slipcased. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Jonathan Anderson and Edwin Low have worked as the photographic team of Anderson & Low since 1990. Based in London, the two met while sharing a darkroom and have since collaborated on a broad range of photographic projects encompassing portraiture, architecture, and nudes. Recently their work has focused on various aspects of sport and the lives of athletes. We are pleased to release simultaneously two books, available separately or as a boxed set. Release of the books coincides with a major exhibition of the Athletes photographs at the National Portrait Gallery in London, scheduled for February 2002. Athletes features photographs taken during the three years prior to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Athletes from many countries and various sports are included. Taken as a whole, these images meld into a single reflection of athletics and sport - a dynamic portrait replete with the beauty, toil, and determination of some of the world s finest young athletes as they strive to achieve their Olympic dream. Photographs of the National Danish Gymnastic Team are featured in Gymnasts. This series of nudes emphasizes the beauty and grace of these athletes as they assume classical poses, work through routines, or seemingly defy gravity in aerial photographs.

Fights, The by: Hoff, Charles/Richard Ford

Fights, The
by: Hoff, Charles/Richard Ford

Hardcover. San Francisco , Chronicle Books , 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 127 pages. Hardcover. Extensive b&w photography throughout. Illustrated frontispiece. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. Hoff's skill as a photographer is shown plainly throughout this book. He was known for using very little film, which increases an objective appreciation of his skill; he understood boxing and could anticipate moments of significance and arrange them to create technically superb photographs, without making dozens of pictures. The boxers depicted in this volume are now historical figures, but so are these photographs, of which Hoff is perhaps the best example. Live television coverage has changed the nature of boxing photography irrecoverably since the days when Hoff was photographing the sport. This volume is important as a historical document, then, from two angles - firstly as a record of what many perceive as the golden age of boxing, but also as an archive of amazing photography skills which are now impossible for photographers to learn, let alone master. A must for fans of both serious photography and boxing.

Neil Leifer: Ballet in the Dirt: The Golden Age of Baseball
by: Neil Leifer, Eric Knoll (Editor), Ron Shelton (Introduction)

Hardcover. NY, Taschen, reprint, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Oblong hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 293 pages in color. This superb collection of 60s and 70s baseball images commemorates the sport's finest moments via the lens of legendary sports photographer Neil Leifer Professional baseball of the 1960s and 1970s belongs to Neil Leifer, the premier sports photographer of his generation. In 1960, at age 17, Neil had the human drive to match his new Nikon motor drive and he was on his way. With gumption and an eye for the decisive moment, the baby-faced kid from Manhattan's lower east side was soon selling his photos to Sports Illustrated. This superb collection of images reflects the total access Neil had to the players on the ball field, in the dugout, and in the locker room. All the pathos, elation, disappointment, and celebration are etched upon the faces of the players and their mercurial fans. From the 1960 World Series between the Yankees and the Pirates - decided in the 9th inning of the 7th game by a Bill Mazeroski home run - to the 1977 Series between the Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Neil Leifer never stopped shooting. He was up in the nosebleed section of the grandstands in Yankee Stadium, in the rafters of the Astrodome in Houston, or a helicopter high above.Who won the games wasn't important - only how the game was played. The blood, sweat, and grace. It's all about the game, and Leifer's photographs create a topographical map to the very heart and soul of baseball. Featuring over 300 photos, the book is divided into four chapters: The Game; the Heroes - like Roberto Clemente, Mickey Mantle, and pitcher Sandy Koufax; the Rivalry (infamously, between the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox and the Giants and Dodgers); and the World Series championship.

Park Life: The Summer of 1977 at Comiskey Parkby: Elliott, Peter

Park Life: The Summer of 1977 at Comiskey Park
by: Elliott, Peter

Hardcover. Chicago, Paper Mirror Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, large format, 117 pages. B&w photos by Elliott. Images from another age in baseball history. Chicago photojournalist Peter Elliott brings to life the rhythms and character of this revered stadium during 1977, one of its most celebrated seasons. Elliott's recent discovery of negatives lost for 23 years proudly displays the earthy, forgotten life of old-time Chicago baseball before the advent of corporate sky-boxes and gourmet hot dogs. His refined style demonstrates both the lush eye of youthful talent and the singular drive that brought him back to Comiskey Park over and over again during that strange and captivating time known as "the summer of the Chicago Hit Men." The old park never looked so good. And its reappearance through the artistry of Peter Elliott permits it to live again in the hearts of life-long fans and everyone who loves baseball. An engaging narrative accompanies the photographs and catalogues the history and foibles of park, team, and fans.
