Hardcover. NY, Museum of the City of New York, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 327 pages, illustrated in color and b&w. In the early decades of the twentieth century, a vibrant theatrical culture took shape on New York City's Lower East Side. Original dramas, comedies, musicals, and vaudeville, along with sophisticated productions of Shakespeare, Ibsen, and Chekhov, were innovatively staged for crowds that rivaled the audiences on Broadway. Though these productions were in Yiddish and catered to Eastern European, Jewish audiences (the largest immigrant group in the city at the time), their artistic innovations, energetic style, and engagement with politics and the world around them came to influence all facets of the American stage. Vividly illustrated and with essays from leading historians and critics, this book recounts the heyday of "Yiddish Broadway" and its vital contribution to American Jewish life and crossover to the broader American culture. Art icon Jeff Koons lying on a giant plastic ball, Richard Serra disappearing into one of his vast steel sculptures, "king of theater" Claus Peymann sporting a cardboard crown ever since shooting his portrait of painter A.R. Penck in 1994, Oliver Mark (born 1963) has photographed countless artists, actors, politicians and other celebrities. Sometimes concentrating only on the subject against the most minimal setting possible, sometimes placing them in front of an artful background, Mark presents the rich and famous in constantly new and consistently trenchant ways, bringing their less apparent characteristics to light and casting them in disorienting circumstances. Other of Mark's subjects included here are Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, George Lucas, Sir Ridley Scott, Jenny Holzer, Mia Farrow, Norbert Tadeusz, Kenny Scharf, Georg Baselitz, David Chipperfield, Luc Tuymans, Cate Blanchett, Balthus and Sir Peter Ustinov. Besides Mark's most successful portraits, this volume also contains some of his most beautiful fashion photographs and other stills, many of which have appeared in several well-known magazines. Texts by Margit J. Mayer, Christoph Amend, Christian Boros and others round off this entertaining "best-of" collection.

An examination of the ultimate power opera grants to singing: the reversal of death. In Operatic Afterlives, Michal Grover-Friedlander examines the implications of opera's founding myth-the story of Orpheus and Eurydice: Orpheus's attempt to revive the dead Eurydice with the power of singing. Grover-Friedlander examines instances in which opera portrays an existence beyond death, a revival of the dead, or a simultaneous presence of life and death. These portrayals-in operas by Puccini and other composers and performances by Maria Callas-are made possible, she argues, by the unique treatment of voice in the operas in question: the occurrence of a breach in which singing itself takes on an afterlife in the face of the singer's death. Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press , 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 438 pages, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. An intimate glimpse into the professional and romantic relationship between Harriet Pattison and the renowned architect Louis Kahn. On a winter day in 1953, a mysterious man in a sheepskin coat stood out to Harriet Pattison, then a theater student at Yale. She would later learn he was the architect Louis Kahn (1901-1974). This chance encounter served as preamble to a fifteen-year romance, with Pattison becoming the architect's closest confidante, his intellectual partner, and the mother of his only son. Here for the first time, Pattison recounts their passionate and sometimes searing relationship. Married and twenty-seven years her senior, Kahn sent her scores of letters--many from far-flung places--until his untimely death. This book weaves together Pattison's own story with letters, postcards, telegrams, drawings, and photographs that reveal Kahn's inner life and his architectural thought process, including new insight into some of his greatest works, both built and unbuilt. What emerges is at once a poignant love story and a vivid portrait of a young woman striving to raise a family while forging an artistic path in the shadow of her famous partner. Clean copy.
Hardcover. NY, Knopf, 1st, 2009, Hardcover, 384 pages. Ronsequist writes about growing up in a tight-knit community of Scandinavian farmers in North Dakota and Minnesota in the late 1930s and early 1940s; about his mother, who was not only an amateur painter but, along with his father, a passionate aviator; and about leaving that flat midwestern landscape in 1955 for New York, where he had won a scholarship to the Art Students League. George Grosz, Edwin Dickinson, and Robert Beverly Hale were among his teachers, but his early life was a struggle until he discovered sign painting. He describes days suspended on scaffolding high over Broadway, painting movie or theater billboards, and nights at the Cedar Tavern with Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and the poet LeRoi Jones. His first major studio, on Coenties Slip, was in the thick of the new art world. Among his neighbors were Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Indiana, Agnes Martin, and Jack Youngerman, and his mentors Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns.

Along with cutting-edge art, literature, and jazz music of 1920s Paris, there was also experimental new dance, exemplified by the Ballets Suedois, the "Swedish Ballet." Choreographed almost entirely by Jean Bsrlin but visualized by 32 painters from 11 nationalities, it boasted costumes and backdrops from the likes of Fernand LZger, Gssta Adrian-Nilsson (GAN), Nils Dardel, and Gerald Murphy, with music by Erik Satie and even Cole Porter, in 23 ballets produced during the company's brief, brilliant existence. Illustrated with 78 archival photos and sketches and 67 color reproductions of posters and production paintings, this catalog is as much an art book as it is a dance history, with works seldom seen in over 80 years.

The work of Paul Klee (1879-1940) was deeply influenced by his passion for the theater. Throughout his life, the artist fervently attended theatrical performances, from the opera to puppet shows. Characters from plays or operas Hamlet, Falstaff, or Don Giovanni, for example populate his cryptic visual world. Various types of characters or theatrical elements, such as the clown or the mask, were firmly established themes in his pictorial repertoire. However, Klee primarily forged links between the theater and life, and in so doing, he took up the traditional theme of the world as a stage: people became actors or marionettes; theatrical events converged with scenes from everyday life. This publication sheds light on all of these aspects of Klee's captivation with the stage. A chronology reconstructs a panoramic view of his multifaceted experience with the theater. Selected works by contemporary artists make it clear that not only Klee was fascinated by the sharp-eyed perception of theatrical situations it is a topic that continues to engage artists even today. 394 plates, 212 in color.
