Now We're Getting Somewhere: Poems
by: Addonozio, Kim

Hardcover. NY, Norton, 1st, 2021, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. A dark, no-holds-barred, and often hilarious collection from a prize-winning poet, veering between the poles of self and world. Kim Addonizio's sharp and irreverent eighth volume, Now We're Getting Somewhere, is an essential companion to your practice of the Finnish art of kalsarikannit-drinking at home, alone in your underwear, with no intention of going out. Imbued with the poet's characteristic precision and passion, the collection charts a hazardous course through heartache, climate change, dental work, Outlander, semiotics, and more. Combatting existential gloom with a wicked, seductive energy, Addonizio investigates desire, loss, and the madness of contemporary life. She calls out to Walt Whitman and John Keats, echoes Dorothy Parker, and finds sisterhood with Virginia Woolf. Sometimes confessional, sometimes philosophical, these poems weave from desolation to drollery and clamor with raucous imagery: an insect in high heels, a wolf at an uncomfortable party, a glowing and self-serious guitar.

Nurse Lugton's Curtain
by: Woolf/Julie Vivas, Virginia

Hardcover. San Diego, Harcourt Brace Janovich, 1st, 1991, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket.Color illustrations by Julie Vivas. When old Nurse Lugton falls asleep while sewing her multi-patterned curtain, the sky, huts, villagers, elephants, zebras, giraffes, penguins, and other animals on it come to life. Virginia Woolf's story, first in print in 1965 and republished here as a picture book, is indeed a small tale that flows with the rhythms of an accomplished prose writer. Vivas's watercolor illustrations flow across the pages like the prose, with parading animals and marching villagers costumed as if for Mardi Gras.

On Tugboats: Stories of Work and Life Aboard (SIGNED COPY)
by: Thorndike, Virginia

Softcover. Down East Books, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 384 pages. SIGNED BY AUTHOR on the front fly leaf.Tugboats hold a fascination not only for anyone who has worked aboard a vessel or around a harbor but for many land-bound folks as well. There is something about their chunky, powerful build and their often risky but vital work that excites our interest and admiration. The captains and crews of the tugboats are justifiably proud of what they do, and they have some great stories to tell about the ships and barges they tow or push; the harbors, storms, tides, and dangerous passages they must negotiate; the unions; the pilots; the different designs and capabilties of their boats; and the way the boats and their livelihood are irrevocably changing. Clean copy.

Prom
by: Mark, Mary Ellen/ Martin Bell (Contributor)

Hardcover. Los Angeles, J. Paul Getty Museum, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 164 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. The high school prom is an American tradition, a rite of passage, and one of the most important rituals of youth in this country. The internationally recognized documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark took on the extraordinary challenge of working with the Polaroid 20x24 Land camera to produce this fascinating look at dozens of young people from a diverse range of backgrounds on this memorable night in their lives. Traveling across the United States to complete the project from 2006 to 2009, Mark photographed prom-goers at thirteen schools from New York City to Charlottesville, Virginia, to Houston to Los Angeles. Mark's husband, the filmmaker Martin Bell, collaborated with her on the project to produce and direct a film, also called Prom, featuring interviews with the students about their lives, dreams, and hopes for the future. A DVD of the film is packaged with the book. The 127 large-format photographs are reproduced in rich detail, and quotations from the student interviews punctuate the book. Some of the students' statements are comical, while others are deeply touching. The result is a captivating and revealing document of American youth at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
