by: Shudo Denmei

Hardcover. Seattle, Eastland Press, 1st US, 1990, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a lightly worn dust jacket. 251 pages with fold-out diagram in rear. Meridian therapy is a school of Japanese acupuncture which is distinguished by its emphasis on the classics, its utilization of the five-phase points in treating the root of disease, and the importance which it attaches to palpatory skills in diagnosis and point location. Joan Mitchell: Christine Ay Tjoe
by: Mnuchin Gallery

Hardcover. NY, Mnuchin Gallery , 1st, 2023, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 65 pages, fully Illustrated fabric bound catalogue designed by McCall Associates, New York and authored by art historian, professor and scholar Clayton Press. "Mnuchin Gallery is proud to present Joan Mitchell--Christine Ay Tjoe: an exhibition which sparks a dialogue between, Joan Mitchell and Christine Ay Tjoe, two trailblazers of 20th and 21st century abstraction... These two distinct artists use alternative means to address the same question: "What does it mean to make an abstract painting?" Mitchell and Ay Tjoe both engage with the canvas using a bevy of brushstrokes that vary in degrees of strength and depth. Through this process, they yield deeply introspective paintings that simultaneously allude to the real world with playful titles and harmonic color palettes. The paintings presented in Joan Mitchell-Christine Ay Tjoe underscore how these artists draw from their environments and cultures, as they ultimately seek to transcend generational boundaries and prescribed definitions of Eastern and Western artistic traditions." John Gutmann: The Photographer at Work
by: Sally Stein , Douglas R. Nickel, et al.

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press;, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 180 pages. John Gutmann (1905-1998) was one of America's most distinctive photographers. Born in Germany where he trained as an artist and art teacher, he fled the Nazis in 1933 and settled in San Francisco, reinventing himself as a photo-reporter. Gutmann captured images of American culture, celebrating signs of a vibrant democracy, however imperfect. His own status as an outsider--a Jew in Germany, a naturalized citizen in the United States--informed his focus on individuals from the Asian-American, African-American, and gay communities, as well as his photography in India, Burma, and China during World War II. This handsome book acknowledges Gutmann's place in the history of photography. Drawing on his archive of photographs and papers at the Center for Creative Photography, it presents both unfamiliar works and little-known contexts for his imagery, linking his photography to his passionate interest in painting and filmmaking, his collections of non-Western art and artifacts, and his pedagogy. In addition to a major essay by Sally Stein, the volume includes an introduction by Douglas R. Nickel, and an overview of the Gutmann archive by Amy Rule.

Joseph Beuys: Plakate Posters
by: Rene Spiegelberger /Claus Von Der Osten

Hardcover. Munich/NJ, Prestel, 1st, 2021, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 256 pages. One of the most important German postwar artists, Joseph Beuys is known for his drawings, performance art, activism, and teaching, influencing a generation of younger artists and expanding the concept of what art is. He had an ambitious goal for his art: to transform western culture into a more peaceful, democratic, and creative place. He also considered everyone to be an artist and that art and life should not be viewed separately. This book pulls together all of the avant-garde artist's posters from his entire oeuvre. His earliest posters often announced exhibitions of his own performance art, while later posters expressed his philosophical and political opinions, such as those for Germany's Green Party, which he was a founding member of. This book includes full page illustrations of Beuys' most important posters, essays about Beuys' influence, an extensive biography of the artist and a complete catalogue of all posters created under his guidance. Text in English and German. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

by: Berton, Pierre

Hardcover. Boston, Little, Brown and Company, 1st, 1983, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 239 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Black and white pictures throughout. Clean, tight copy. More than 10,000 images reside in public archives and private collections, depicting every aspect of what popular historian Pierre Berton has called "one of the strangest mass movements in history." For this book, Berton selected 200 photographs, some iconic, some touchingly personal, and most previously unpublished. The Klondike Quest brings to life the panoramic drama of the great stampede for gold as seen by the ordinary gold-seeker. The photographs are beautifully reproduced and informatively and colorfully captioned. "One million people, it is said, laid plans to go to the Klondike. One hundred thousand actually set off. And so the Klondike saga is a chronicle of humanity in the mass.... For the next eighteen months, the Yukon interior plateau became a human anthill."

Language and the Politics of Emotion (Studies in Emotion and Social Interaction)
by: Lutz, Catherine; Abu-Lughod, Lila

Softcover. Cambridge UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 1990, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 217 pages. Emotions have long been a central concern in philosophy, psychological and sociological studies. When anthropologists began to study emotion, they challenged many assumptions shared by Western academics and lay persons by exposing the cultural variability of emotional meanings. In this collection of original essays by anthropologists concerned with the relationship of language and emotion, it is argued that the key focus to the study of emotion might be the politics of social life rather than the psychology of the individual. Through close studies of talk about emotion and emotional discourses in social contexts from poetry and song to therapeutic narratives, scholars who have worked in India, Fiji, the United States, Egypt, Senegal and the Solomon Islands show how emotion is tied to politics of everyday interaction. Their arguments and cross-cultural findings will intrigue and provoke anyone who has thought about the relationship between emotion, language and social life. The book will be of special interest to those who find the boundaries between cultural, psychological and linguistic anthropology, sociology, cross-cultural psychiatry, and social psychology too confining. Clean, bright copy.

Law and Order in Buffalo Bill's Country: Legal Culture and Community on the Great Plains, 1867-1910
by: Mark R. Ellis

Softcover. Lincoln NE, University of Nebraska Press, reprint, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 262 pages. Ellis offers a fresh interpretation of the legal culture of the Wild West. Written to dispel the myth of the lawless western culture, this book on Nebraska and the larger Great Plains demonstrates that most communities on the plains contained clearly defined legal systems, and that only on a few occasions did lawlessness appear. He has used an impressive variety of sources, including state and county archives, newspapers and relevant secondary works. With them he built a convincing case challenging the accepted view of frontier lawlessness. Clean copy.

Life After Death: A History of the Afterlife in Western Religion
by: Alan Segal

Softcover. NY, Doubleday, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 866 pages. In a masterful exploration of how Western civilizations have defined the afterlife, Alan F. Segal weaves together biblical and literary scholarship, sociology, history, and philosophy. A renowned scholar, Segal examines the maps of the afterlife found in Western religious texts and reveals not only what various cultures believed but how their notions reflected their societies' realities and ideals, and why those beliefs changed over time. He maintains that the afterlife is the mirror in which a society arranges its concept of the self. The composition process for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam begins in grief and ends in the victory of the self over death.
