A History of the Eragny Press, 1894-1914by: Marcella D. Genz

A History of the Eragny Press, 1894-1914
by: Marcella D. Genz

Hardcover. New Castle DE, Oak Knoll, 1st, 2004, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. A History of the Eragny Press, 1894-1914, is a full and exceptionally well-researched account of the Press. It begins with a brief survey of Lucien Pissarro's early career in France in order to establish the influences and motivations for his book designs and proceeds to examine Lucien's association with Charles Ricketts, the establishment of the Eragny Press, and the Press' relationship to the publishers Hacon & Ricketts. Eragny was not a commercial publisher, yet profits was an important motivation for the Pissarros. Included here is the first major account for a private press of the costs of production, profits, and marketing and distribution practices. Eragny Press books were promoted and sold in England, the Continent, and the United States. Two of the Eragny Press books were the results of commissions from French bibliophile clubs. This history of the Eragny Press includes a discussion of the influences and artistic theories that are the basis for the Pissarros' books and provides a critical reassessment of their significance within the history of the English Arts and Crafts Private Press movement. About half the book is devoted to an exhaustive and detailed bibliography of all the Eragny Press publications, with critical commentary on each. Accompanying the text and the descriptive bibliography are more than seventy-five reproductions of rare Eragny wood engravings ( by Lucien Pissarro, T. Sturge Moore, and others), title pages, borders and decorated initials, binding papers, and book covers. A History of the Eragny Press, 1894-1914, is an important book for anyone interested in the history of printing, the Arts and Crafts movement, Impressionism, private presses, the art of wood engraving, and illustrated and fine books.

Babylon and Other Stories (SIGNED COPY)
by: Ohlin, Alix

Hardcover. NY, Knopf, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Following The Missing Person, her highly praised debut--"A seriously entertaining and probing novel," wrote The Washington Post Book World--Alix Ohlin gives us a collection of stories that demonstrates her impressive range. In their various locales, from Montreal (where a prosthetic leg casts a furious spell on its beholders) to the Southwest (where a Soviet-era exchange student changes a family's dynamic forever), the characters in Babylon are coming to terms with life's epiphanies, for good or ill. They range from the very young who, confronted with their parents' limitations, discover their own resolve, to those facing middle age and its particular indignities, no less determined to assert themselves and shape their destinies. A tenacious eight-year-old practices piano on paper keys; an expectant mother, settling into an idyllic farmhouse, discovers the tragic story of its previous, rightful inhabitants; and a fictional haunted hospital becomes an obsession for a ghostwriter grappling with her empty nest. Black Out: Silhouettes Then and Nowby: Naeem, Asma

Black Out: Silhouettes Then and Now
by: Naeem, Asma

Hardcover. Washington DC, National Portrait Gallery/Princeton University Press, 1st, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, Accompanied exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Illustrated. First major publication to focus on the development of silhouettes, gathers leading experts to shed light on the surprisingly complex historical, political, and social underpinnings of this ostensibly simple art form. This richly illustrated volume explores likenesses of everyone from presidents and celebrities to everyday citizens and enslaved people. Ultimately, the book reveals how silhouettes registered the paradoxes of the unstable young nation, roiling with tensions over slavery and political independence. Primarily tracing the rise of the silhouette in the decades leading up to the Civil War, Black Out also considers the ubiquity of the genre today, particularly in contemporary art. Historical research and four contemporary artists: Kara Walker, Kristi Malakoff, Kumi Yamashita, and Camille Utterback. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

Constantine: Roman Emperor, Christian Victorby: Paul Stephenson

Constantine: Roman Emperor, Christian Victor
by: Paul Stephenson

Hardcover. NY, The Overlook Press, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 358 pages, Illustrated with three sections of color plates. b&w maps, illustrations. Clean copy. A fascinating survey of the life and enduring legacy of perhaps the greatest and most unjustly ignored of the Roman emperors-written by a richly gifted historian. In 312 A.D., Constantine-one of four Roman emperors ruling a divided empire-marched on Rome to establish his control. On the eve of the battle, a cross appeared to him in the sky with an exhortation, "By this sign conquer." Inscribing the cross on the shields of his soldiers, Constantine drove his rivals into the Tiber and claimed the imperial capital for himself. Under Constantine, Christianity emerged from the shadows, its adherents no longer persecuted. Constantine united the western and eastern halves of the Roman Empire. He founded a new capital city, Constantinople. Thereafter the Christian Roman Empire endured in the East, while Rome itself fell to the barbarian hordes.

Dylan's Autobiography of a Vocation: A Reading of the Lyrics 1965-1967by: Renza, Louis A.

Dylan's Autobiography of a Vocation: A Reading of the Lyrics 1965-1967
by: Renza, Louis A.

Hardcover. New York, Bloomsbury Academic, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 224 pages. Hardcover with no dust jacket. A very clean, unmarked copy with no visible wear. Price sticker to back cover. Otherwise a tight copy. Many critics have interpreted Bob Dylan's lyrics, especially those composed during the middle to late 1960s, in the contexts of their relation to American folk, blues, and rock 'n' roll precedents; their discographical details and concert performances; their social, political and cultural relevance; and/or their status for discussion as "poems." Dylan's Autobiography of a Vocation instead focuses on how all of Dylan's 1965-1967 songs manifest traces of his ongoing, internal "autobiography" in which he continually declares and questions his relation to a self-determined existential summons.

Frederic Church and the Landscape Oil Sketchby: Wilton, Andrew

Frederic Church and the Landscape Oil Sketch
by: Wilton, Andrew

London, National Gallery, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 71 pages illustrated in color. A key member of the Hudson River School, Frederic Church (1826-1900) rose to fame as the creator of some of America's most iconic landscape paintings. He also traveled abroad extensively, making trips to Jamaica, South America, Europe, and the Middle East. At home and away, Church made numerous plein air oil sketches of the landscapes he saw, some magnificent, some humble, many of them later subjects for his full-scale paintings. Frederic Church and the Landscape Oil Sketch features some thirty sketches Church executed during his career. Many of these wonderful works come from Olana, the artist's magnificent home overlooking the Hudson River. As Andrew Wilton's essay explains, these informal and often spontaneous sketches played a vital role in the practice and pedagogy of landscape painting in American art just as they did in European art of the 19th century. Harry Benson on Photojournalismby: Gigi and Harry Benson

Harry Benson on Photojournalism
by: Gigi and Harry Benson

Softcover. NY, Harmony Books, 1st, 1982, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 176 pages, illustrated in b&w, some color. In a charming, straightforward way, Benson tells of his life in photography. Benson presents a useful mix of his own photography with personal ancedotes and specific lists of how-to's. The photos are useful for showing some of the great moments that can be caught on film, as well as for giving the newer photographer something to aspire towards. Mixed in with the photo sections are pages of up-front writing about how Benson achieved what you are looking at. "Certain qualities are essential to a photojournalist -- an inherent love of photography, a strong determination to succeed, and a willingness to put everything second to your work. You also need a sense of history, an awareness of human behavior, physical stamina, a fascination with gossip, a survival instinct, a naive belief in yourself, and a bit of luck." -- Harry Benson
