Flap has price, (C) page with First Edition statement but actually Book Club edition. Edited by Mary Street Alinder & Andrea Gray Stillman. In his early years in Yosemite, Adams formed the habit of writing letters at every opportunity. His correspondence, therefore, virtually provides the full record of his life. Through the years, wherever he went, from the Southwest to Maine to Alaska, he wrote literally thousands of letters and postcards. Among the family, friends, fellow photographers, environmentalists, and politicians with whom he corresponded rank such eminent names as Alfred Stieglitz, Dorothea Lange, Paul Strand, jimmy Carter, Beaumont and Nancy Newhall, Garry Trudeau, and Edward Weston. Including both sides of continuing dialogues with these people and others, this book revels the growth of the artist and the whole man, as well as the development of the art of photography through the voices of the masters. A companion volume to his best-selling autobiography, ANSEL ADAMS: LETTERS AND IMAGES is illustrated with over 100 of his photographs from monumental landscapes to family snapshots. This combination of images with the highlights of a lifetime of letter writing creates a compelling portrait of one of the 20th century's greatest artists and conservationists and one of the most personable and memorable of men.
Hardcover. Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, An extraordinary work, unparalleled in its breadth and depth of detail, this three-volume set offers the first comprehensive history of architecture and town planning throughout colonial North America, from Russian Alaska to French Quebec, to Spanish Florida and California, to British, Dutch, and other settlements on the East Coast. Across this vast terrain, James Kornwolf conjures the outlines of the constructed environment as it emerged in settlements and communities, in structures and sites, and in the flourishes and idiosyncrasies of the families and individuals who erected and inhabited colonial buildings and towns. Here as never before readers can observe the impulses and principles of colonial design and planning as they are implemented in the buildings and streets, harbors and squares, gardens and landscapes of the New World. Incorporating more than 3,000 illustrations, Kornwolf's massive work conveys the full range of the colonial encounter with the continent's geography, from the high forms of architecture through formal landscape design and town planning. From these pages emerge the fine arts of environmental design, an understanding of the political and economic events that helped to determine settlement in North America, an appreciation of the various architectural and landscape forms that the settlers created, and an awareness of the diversity of the continent's geography and its peoples. Considering the humblest buildings along with the mansions of the wealthy and powerful, public buildings, forts, and churches, Kornwolf captures the true dynamism and diversity of colonial communities-their rivalries and frictions, their outlooks and attitudes-as they extended their hold on the land. His work conveys for the first time the full scale, from intimate to grand, of their enduring transformation of the natural landscape of North America. NOTE: DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.
Hardcover. Long Beach CA, Safari Press, reprint, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 294 pages, b&w illustrations. Originally published in 1904, it chronicles a hunting trip to several locations in Alaska, including sheep, bears, moose and more. Captain Radclyffe was an English gentleman-hunter who visited Alaska in 1903. He bagged Dall sheep on the Kenai Peninsula, back then a relatively new destination for sport hunting. He shot excellent brown bear and moose, one a 57-incher on Kussiloff Lake on the Alaska Peninsula. On his final bear hunt, a sow charged him and his native guide abandoned him. He was arrested for game law violations that prematurely ended his hunt for sheep, adding another interesting dimension to this well-written story. The charges against Radclyffe were later dismissed since he had an off-season permit to collect for the British Museum, but the authors partner was not so lucky. Radclyffe writes of how the judge enjoyed rubbing the dismissal into the face of the arresting marshal, and he paints a vivid picture of the interactions of the hunters, guides, and authorities. After all his troubles, he lost most of his trophies because of shipping problems related to the Russo-Japanese War. Clean, bright copy.

Hardcover. Taschen, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 520 pages. Over 30 trips-traveled by foot, light aircraft, seagoing vessels, canoes, and even balloons, through extreme heat and cold and in sometimes dangerous conditions-Salgado created a collection of images showing us nature, animals, and indigenous peoples in breathtaking beauty. Mastering the monochrome with an extreme deftness to rival the virtuoso Ansel Adams, Salgado brings black-and-white photography to a new dimension; the tonal variations in his works, the contrasts of light and dark, recall the works of Old Masters such as Rembrandt and Georges de La Tour. What does one discover in GENESIS? The animal species and volcanoes of the Galapagos; penguins, sea lions, cormorants, and whales of the Antarctic and South Atlantic; Brazilian alligators and jaguars; African lions, leopards, and elephants; the isolated Zo'e tribe deep in the Amazon jungle; the Stone Age Korowai people of West Papua; nomadic Dinka cattle farmers in Sudan; Nenet nomads and their reindeer herds in the Arctic Circle; Mentawai jungle communities on islands west of Sumatra; the icebergs of the Antarctic; the volcanoes of Central Africa and the Kamchatka Peninsula; Saharan deserts; the Negro and Jurua rivers in the Amazon; the ravines of the Grand Canyon; the glaciers of Alaska... and beyond. Having dedicated so much time, energy, and passion to the making of this work, Salgado calls GENESIS "my love letter to the planet."Due to size and weight, DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.
