Fateful Lightning: A New History of the Civil War & Reconstruction
by: Allen C. Guelzo

Softcover. NY, Oxford University Press, reprint, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 592 pages. Two-time Lincoln Prize-winning historian Allen C. Guelzo offers a marvelous portrait of the Civil War and its era, covering not only the major figures and epic battles, but also politics, religion, gender, race, diplomacy, and technology. And unlike other surveys of the Civil War era, it extends the reader's vista to include the postwar Reconstruction period and discusses the modern-day legacy of the Civil War in American literature and popular culture. Guelzo also puts the conflict in a global perspective, underscoring Americans' acute sense of the vulnerability of their republic in a world of monarchies. He examines the strategy, the tactics, and especially the logistics of the Civil War and brings the most recent historical thinking to bear on emancipation, the presidency and the war powers, the blockade and international law, and the role of intellectuals, North and South. Harsh Justice: Criminal Punishment and the Widening Divide between America and Europe
by: James Q. Whitman

Softcover. NY, Oxford University Press, 3rd pr., 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 311 pages. Criminal punishment in America is harsh and degrading--more so than anywhere else in the liberal west. Executions and long prison terms are commonplace in America. Countries like France and Germany, by contrast, are systematically mild. European offenders are rarely sent to prison, and when they are, they serve far shorter terms than their American counterparts. Why is America so comparatively harsh? In this novel work of comparative legal history, James Whitman argues that the answer lies in America's triumphant embrace of a non-hierarchical social system and distrust of state power which have contributed to a law of punishment that is more willing to degrade offenders.

Honoring the Civil War Dead: Commemoration and the Problem of Reconciliation
by: Neff, John R.

Hardcover. Lawrence KS, University Press of Kansas, 1st, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 328 pages. By the end of the Civil War, fatalities from that conflict had far exceeded previous American experience, devastating families and communities alike. As John Neff shows, commemorating the 620,000 lives lost proved to be a persistent obstacle to the hard work of reuniting the nation, as every memorial observation compelled painful recollections of the war. Neff contends that the significance of the Civil War dead has been largely overlooked and that the literature on the war has so far failed to note how commemorations of the dead provide a means for both expressing lingering animosities and discouraging reconciliation. Inferno: An Anatomy of American Punishment
by: Robert A. Ferguson

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, Harvard University Press, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 337 pages. America's criminal justice system is broken. The United States punishes at a higher per capita rate than any other country in the world. In the last twenty years, incarceration rates have risen 500 percent. Sentences are harsh, prisons are overcrowded, life inside is dangerous, and rehabilitation programs are ineffective. Police and prosecutors operate in the dark shadows of the legal process--sometimes resigning themselves to the status quo, sometimes turning a profit from it. The courts define punishment as "time served," but that hardly begins to explain the suffering of prisoners. Looking not only to court records but to works of philosophy, history, and literature for illumination, Robert Ferguson, a distinguished law professor, diagnoses all parts of a now massive, out-of-control punishment regime. He reveals the veiled pleasure behind the impulse to punish (which confuses our thinking about the purpose of punishment), explains why over time all punishment regimes impose greater levels of punishment than originally intended, and traces a disturbing gap between our ability to quantify pain and the precision with which penalties are handed down. Land, Sky, and All That Is Within: Visionary Photographers in the Southwest
by: James L. Enyeart

Softcover. Santa Fe, Museum of New Mexico Press, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 126 pages. The American Southwest has shaped the lives and work of many artists and literary figures over the last century--Georgia O'Keeffe, D. H. Lawrence, N. Scott Momaday, to name a few--individuals unquestionably drawn to the unrivaled landscape, moved to express its beauty through the written word or through their art, and forever altered by the experience. The survey of photographers and photography in the Southwest between 1870 and 1970 begins with Timothy O'Sullivan and other late nineteenth-century expedition photographers and ends with the color landscape photography of Eliot Porter. In between are Laura Gilpin's portraits of Navajos taken during the 1930s and the documentary images of rural Hispanic communities by Farm Security Administration photographers John Collier Jr. and Russell Lee in the 1940s. Nineteen photographers in all are represented--also including Ansel Adams, Paul Strand, Edward Weston--along with 102 photographs. Clean copy.

Law and Order in Buffalo Bill's Country: Legal Culture and Community on the Great Plains, 1867-1910
by: Mark R. Ellis

Softcover. Lincoln NE, University of Nebraska Press, reprint, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 262 pages. Ellis offers a fresh interpretation of the legal culture of the Wild West. Written to dispel the myth of the lawless western culture, this book on Nebraska and the larger Great Plains demonstrates that most communities on the plains contained clearly defined legal systems, and that only on a few occasions did lawlessness appear. He has used an impressive variety of sources, including state and county archives, newspapers and relevant secondary works. With them he built a convincing case challenging the accepted view of frontier lawlessness. Clean copy.

Leak: Why Mark Felt Became Deep Throat
by: Holland, Max

Hardcover. Lawrence KS, University Press of Kansas, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Through the shadowy persona of Deep Throat, FBI official Mark Felt became as famous as the Watergate scandal his leaks helped uncover. Best known through Hal Holbrook's portrayal in the film version of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's All the President's Men, Felt was regarded for decades as a conscientious but highly secretive whistleblower who shunned the limelight. Yet even after he finally revealed his identity in 2005, questions about his true motivations persisted. Max Holland has found the missing piece of that Deep Throat puzzle--one that's been hidden in plain sight all along. He reveals for the first time in detail what truly motivated the FBI's number-two executive to become the most fabled secret source in American history. In the process, he directly challenges Felt's own explanations while also demolishing the legend fostered by Woodward and Bernstein's bestselling account. Clean copy.

Lefty: An American Odyssey
by: Vernona Gomez Lawrence Goldstone

Hardcover. NY, Ballantine Books, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Daughter Vernona Gomez honors her late father with a well-researched biography of Yankee great Vernon "Lefty" Gomez. From the time he was a child Lefty wanted to be a baseball player. His strength was in his determination to achieve his goal while at the same time being a willing learner from those who had knowledge to pass on to him. In other words he was coachable and aware of his limitations. Gomez played during the heyday of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and later Joe DiMaggio. Lefty was The Yankee Clipper's roommate for several years, and taught the quiet DiMaggio life in the big leagues. The book provides numerous anecdotes of the Yankee greats of this time period which enrich the book a great deal. Gomez was there when Ruth supposedly called his "shot" in Wrigley Field during the 1932 World Series. He was also there when Gehrig was stricken with illness and had to prematurely retire from the game. Clean copy.
