During his lifetime, Francis Bacon maintained that he painted directly onto canvas without the benefit of preparatory studies. Since his death in 1992, however, several groups of works on paper have come to light, offering amazing new insights into Bacon's working methods and personal obsessions. "Bacon's Eye" showcases a unique collectiion of works on paper that were bundled up and given by the artist to his friend Barry Joule just prior to his death. This collection includes a remarkable album of 70 oil sketches that relate to his work from the '50s and '60s, as well as over 900 "working documents": images torn from books, magazines and newspapers that have been painted and sketched over, revealing an artist's-eye-view of some of the most important people and events of the 20th century. As of yet, these works have not been officially recognized as being by Bacon. Permission to to show these works alongside finished paintings was denied by the Bacon Estate. The gallery, 21 Publishing, and a host of Bacon experts firmly believe in the authenticity of these works. This book, along with an exhibition at the Barbican Gallery in London, are a means of allowing the public to judge for itself. Edited by Georgia Mazower. Foreword by John Hoole. Introduction by Mark Sladen. Essay by Mark Sladen.

Hardcover. NY, Scala, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages. Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road was a touchstone for a generation and the centrepiece of the Beat movement in literature and art. This new book examines Kerouac's life and career, and accompanies a major exhibition at The New York Public Library to celebrate the 50th anniversary of On the Road's publication in 1957. Kerouac's achievement as both a literary and cultural figure is traced, including his innovations in narrative techniques and in character development. His counterculture vision is explored, showing his image as a seer and sage who wanted to save America from its obsession with consumerism, the inhibition of sexuality and other conventional bourgeois pieties. The author also explores Kerouac's relationships with Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs and other Beats, as well as the Beat movement in general. The book is heavily illustrated, with material from the extensive Kerouac literary archive owned by The New York Public Library, including typescript drafts of On the Road.

As a standard-bearer of the avant-garde, she created a scandal by helping to organize a public auction of their works, something very few artists had dared to do. Defying the advice of her parents and Manet, she remained in Paris when Prussian troops besieged the city. In her artistic technique she was no less daring. Around 1874, in pictures of tourists and yacht-filled rivers, she broke through to an abbreviated, shorthand style ahead of her contemporaries. Disregarding her own view that Monet had taken landscape painting to its farthest limits, her late oils of gardens are brilliant fireworks of color. This catalogue of a retrospective exhibition that is to tour the country stands on its own as a valuable study.
