Painting Below Zero: Notes on a Life in Art
by: James Rosenquist and David Dalton

Hardcover. NY, Knopf, 1st, 2009, Hardcover, 384 pages. Ronsequist writes about growing up in a tight-knit community of Scandinavian farmers in North Dakota and Minnesota in the late 1930s and early 1940s; about his mother, who was not only an amateur painter but, along with his father, a passionate aviator; and about leaving that flat midwestern landscape in 1955 for New York, where he had won a scholarship to the Art Students League. George Grosz, Edwin Dickinson, and Robert Beverly Hale were among his teachers, but his early life was a struggle until he discovered sign painting. He describes days suspended on scaffolding high over Broadway, painting movie or theater billboards, and nights at the Cedar Tavern with Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and the poet LeRoi Jones. His first major studio, on Coenties Slip, was in the thick of the new art world. Among his neighbors were Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Indiana, Agnes Martin, and Jack Youngerman, and his mentors Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns.

PETER LELY: A LYRICAL VISION
by: Campbell, Caroline

Softcover. US, Paul Holberton Publishing, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 152 pages, illustrated throughout in color and b&w. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to wrappers. Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) was Charles II's Principal Painter and the outstanding artistic figure of Restoration England. When Lely arrived in England in the early 1640s his ambition was to be a painter of narrative scenes and not to work as a portraitist. However, the 'subject pictures' did not find favor with many English patrons and he produced less than thirty. As Lely's friend Richard Lovelace explained, all they wanted was "their own dull counterfeits" or portraits of their mistresses. Thus, Lely was obliged to turn to portraiture to make a living. Yet, his poetic pictures of figures in idyllic landscapes are among the most beautiful paintings made in 17th-century England and this catalog will be the first in-depth look at this important chapter of this major painter's career.

Photographs for the Tsar: The Pioneering Color Photography of Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II
by: Prokudin-Gorskii, Sergei Mikhai

Hardcover. Dial Press, 1st, 1980, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 216 pages. Hardcover. Color photographs. Clean, unmarked copy in excellent condition with minor wear to dust jacket. Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii was a chemist and photographer commissioned by Tzar Nicholas II to photograph as much of the Russian Empre as possible in color. Prokudin-Gorskii used three color separations for his photos and as a result some pictures are astoundingly sharp and brilliantly colored, and some the colors are out of register slightly. That's irrelevant, because the photos are spectacular and show the Russian Empire from end to end on the eve of its collapse.

Pirkle Jones - California Photographs 1935-1982
by: Jones, Pirkle

Hardcover. New York, Aperture , 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good , Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 144 pages, B&W photos. In original shrink wrap. For almost sixty years Pirkle Jones has chronicled the people, politics, and landscape of Northern California-a "promised land" which has long held sway in the American cultural imagination. Within the confines of that locale, he has unearthed a universe of beauty and meaning, photographing everything from flea-market finds to some of the most important American social movements of the second half of the twentieth century. Operating primarily within a social-documentary framework, Jones has made images characterized by sensitivity and acute observation. With uncanny prescience, a sense of urgency, and a sympathetic eye, Jones often plays the dual roles of artist and witness, combining portraiture, landscapes, and architectural photographs to create thorough documents of social structure and upheaval. Among the photo-essays included in Pirkle Jones: California Photographs are a compassionate and controversial piece on the Black Panther Party in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jones's portraits of the Sausalito houseboat community known as Gate 5, and a notable 1956 photo-essay done in collaboration with Dorothea Lange photographing the destruction and dislocation of the Berryessa Valley before it was flooded on completion of the Monticello Dam. Produced as a single issue of Aperture magazine in 1960 under the name "Death of a Valley", this essay remains a powerful testament to the price of progress. The book also includes Jones's work from the last few decades, in which he shifted his focus to an extended series of elegant, contemplative landscapes. A biographical essay by curator Tim B. Wride frames Jones and his work within the context of photographic history, the people he collaborated with-including Ansel Adams as well as Lange-and the great scope of Californian life.

Pre-Raphaelite Landscape, The
by: Staley, Allen

Hardcover. Oxford, Oxford University Press, 1st, 1973, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, 193 pages, 8 color and 100 b&w plates. Examines the approach of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and their associates to the natural world. It is the first serious examination of the consequences of the Pre-Raphaelite creed of 'exact truth to nature', which led to the ever increasing importance of natural detail in Pre-Raphaelite school of landscape painting. Following a discussion of the developing interest in the precise depiction of nature by the Pre-Raphaelites from 1848 to 1851, chapters on individual artists, many hitherto almost forgotten, trace the history of the Pre-Raphaelite landscape in the 1850s and 1860s and its relation to earlier and later art in England and abroad. Much new light is cast on Ruskin's central role as theorist, patron, and critic of mid Victorian art.

R. Crumb Sketchbook. Volume 4: Dec. 1982-Dec, 1989
by: Crumb, Robert

Hardcover. NY, Taschen, reprint, 2025, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Color frontispiece. Black & white illustrations throughout on every page. 11" high X 8" wide, 448 pages. The perfect tribute to the world's favorite dirty old man. It spans the years 1982 to 1989, a period when the artist was comfortably ensconced in rural California, raising his young daughter Sophie, who appears throughout this volume. But Crumb was still Crumb, declaring in one drawing, above a lovingly rendered tree, "As I get older I get more twisted, convoluted, depraved, cynical, embittered, self-centered, jaded, debauched, ruthless, greedy, conceited, set-in-my-ways, long-winded, absent-minded, prejudiced, closed-minded, misanthropic, nervous..." To prove this self-flagellating analysis he fills the pages with his signature perversions (in country settings), scathing social commentary, cruel self-portraits, experimental cubism... and some lovely sylvan landscape. His mastery of the Rapidograph pen is at its zenith here in his 40s, Clean, still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

Raw Color: The Circles of David Smith
by: Breslin, David

Softcover. Williamstown MA, Clark Art Institute, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 80 pages. Raw Color addresses the relationships between landscape, industry, and the works David Smith (1906-1965) realized between 1961 and 1963. The Circle series was his most ambitious attempt to pair painting and sculpture. Painted in raw, inorganic colors but constructed to stand in concert with the dramatic Adirondack landscape in which he lived, Smith's sculptures confront viewers with a conflict. How are we to be modern, responsive to the materials and the technologies of our time, and yet also remain conscious of our respective locales and nature? To demonstrate the importance of place in Smith's practice, historical photographs of Smith's Circle series at his Bolton Landing, New York, home and studio are complemented by new photographs of the sculptures installed at the Clark's Lunder Center at Stone Hill. Noted artist Charles Ray contributes an essay that explores how time, memory, and landscape are embedded in Smith's sculpture.

Renzo Piano: Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern, The Architecture
by: Piano, Renzo

Hardcover. Germany, Hatje Cantz Publishers, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 159 pages. Like new in publishers shrink-wrap. The prominent Genovese architect Renzo Piano--recipient of the 1998 Pritzker Award and architect of the Whitney Museum of American Art and Morgan Library renovations, as well as the new New York Times building--has just completed a new and unusual museum building--the Zentrum Paul Klee on the outskirts of Bern. The center, says Piano, is dedicated to the "poet of silence," and thus it was fitting to consider building a museum that would speak softly. The Zentrum Paul Klee rises upward in the form of three hills connected by a 150-meter-long thoroughfare, the "Museum Street" serving as a path within the complex. The three structures make up a harmonious yet prominent landscape sculpture whose roofs are supported by innovative steel construction. Includes photographs, design sketches, plans and models--a living image of a magnificent building.
