Walter Chappell : Eternal Impermanence
by: Filippo Maggia (Editor), Walter Chappell (Photographer)

Hardcover. NY, Skira, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 224 pages. A splendid monograph on an unconventional photographer who developed a unique and deeply personal vision of the world surrounding him. Walter Chappell (1925-2000) is considered one of the foremost figures in twentieth-century American photography. His thinking and vision of the world were closely connected with the intimistic, spiritual explorations undertaken between the 1950s and the 1970s by artists like Minor White and Paul Caponigro. While Chappell photographed various subjects, his inner eye was stimulated in particular by the form of the human body and landscapes as well as the combination of both, through which he endeavored to perceive the creative flow, the energy that runs through and connects all things. Produced to accompany the first major European retrospective of Walter Chappell's work, this catalog presents over 130 photographs, all originals, as well as the unfinished and previously unpublished album World of Flesh, which the photographer intended as the primary publication on his work. Wayne Thiebaud
by: Baker, Kenneth

Hardcover. New York, Rizzoli, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover with illustrated dust jacket. 358 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. The most comprehensive and deluxe monograph on Wayne Thiebaud, a celebrated and active American artist, spanning the length of his career, from the mid-1950s to the present. Wayne Thiebaud is one of the world's most popular and respected painters. Born in 1920, he has lived for most of his life in Sacramento, with much of his youth spent in Long Beach; Southern California, in particular Laguna Beach, remains an area of great sentimentality. For this book he has selected the works himself, an act of autobiography in a sense. At age 94, he looked back over his life and his work, rich with breakthroughs in painting and masterful individuality. This deluxe volume, with more than 200 illustrations, covers Thiebaud's career as a painter and draftsman from 1959 to 2014. It features many of the still lifes of pies, cakes, desserts, candies, and other objects--lusciously painted, brightly colored, perfectly composed, and gently comic--for which he is best known. Such works brought national recognition in 1962 with a seminal exhibition at the Allan Stone Gallery in New York, attracting rave reviews and, to the discomfort of the artist himself, leading critics to see him as part of the Pop Art movement. The other artistic genres that he cultivated most avidly since then are landscape and cityscape, with special interests in the Sacramento River valley and San Francisco. New essays by a wide range of writers give a fresh perspective on his life and work.

What I Saw
by: Yoakum, Joseph Elmer/ Mark Pascale, Esther Adler, others

Art Intitute of Chicago/Yale University Press, 1st, 2021, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial cloth, 251 pages illustrated in color. The extraordinary life of a captivating American artist, beautifully illustrated with his dreamlike drawings Much of Joseph Elmer Yoakum's story comes from the artist himself--and is almost too fantastic to believe. At a young age, Yoakum (1891-1972) traveled the globe with numerous circuses; he later served in a segregated noncombat regiment during World War I before settling in Chicago. There, inspired by a dream, he began his artistic career at age seventy-one, producing some two thousand drawings over a decade. How did Yoakum gain representation in major museum collections in Chicago and New York? What fueled his process, which he described as a "spiritual unfoldment"? This volume delves into the friendships Yoakum forged with the Chicago Imagists that secured his place in art history, explores the religious outlook that may have helped him cope with a racially fractured city, and examines his complicated relationship to African American and Native American identities. With hundreds of beautiful color reproductions of his dreamlike drawings, it offers the most comprehensive study of the artist's work, illuminating his vivid and imaginative creativity and giving definition and dimension to his remarkable biography. Whistler in Watercolor
by: Lee Glazer, Emily Jacobson, Blythe Mccarthy, Katherine Roeder

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in pictorial boards, 286 pages. A focused investigation of Whistlers watercolors that introduces readers to a rarely seen aspect of the artists creative output In the 1880s, James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) reinvented himself through the medium of watercolor. At the time, excellence in watercolor was most often associated with British artists, and most notably with the work of J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851). Whistlers embrace of watercolor allowed the expatriate artist to present himself as an heir to the great Turner, while at the same time creating easily portable works that could supply an American market and, the artist hoped, help secure his art-historical legacy in his home country. Indeed, it was the American Gilded Age industrialist Charles Lang Freer who would amass the largest collection of Whistlers watercolors, eventually bequeathing them to the Smithsonian in 1906. This publication is the first systematic study of Freer's amazing treasure trove of more than 50 watercolors by Whistler and includes figures, landscapes, nocturnes, and interiors. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap. DUE TO WEIGHT DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

William Beckman
by: Belz, Carl

Softcover. Seattle WA, Frye Art Museum, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 108 pages in color. Catalogue of an exhibition held at Frye Art Museum, Seattle, WA, 2002. Firm binding, clean inside copy. *** A major exhibition devoted to the American painter William Beckman, one of the leading exponents of the Realist "school." A figurative artist, he leans heavily upon classical tradition. The nude portraits can be sometimes jarring. Less well-known are his scenes of rural America, with farms and silos. *** "William Beckman (b. 1942) paints himself, loved ones, and the land he has lived upon, creating edgy portraits and landscapes. His subjects, whether mother or lover, are delivered to the viewer with gripping details, without embelishment. He creates his figurative art using a unique method. He applies paint, then shaves of layer after layer from the surface with a razor, repainting and polishing the canvas to create lustrous, absorbing images. His realism is stripped of sentiment, his idealized portraits scrupulously rendered, and his expansive tracts of Minnesota farmland theatrically scaled. Each painting is epic in significance and matter-of-fact at the same ime. This is the first book that offers a comprehensive view of Beckman's art and career.

William Merritt Chase: Landscapes in Oil
by: Ronald G. Pisano

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 192 pages. Admired for finding beauty in everyday surroundings, William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) brought an autobiographical element to his work, earning him a unique place in late-19th-century American art history. This book, the third of four volumes to document the complete works of Chase, traces his career as a landscape painter. Following Chase's training in Munich in the 1870s and his many trips to Spain in the early 1880s, his works became light filled and colorful. These paintings anticipate Chase's well-known park scenes of the 1880s painted in Brooklyn and New York and his 1890s works depicting the hills and shoreline adjacent to his home in Shinnecock Hills, Long Island, now recognized as being among the most important examples of American Impressionism. This book presents all of his known landscapes painted in oil, which include many of his best-loved works, in beautiful reproduction, accompanied by the most current and thorough documentation on them.
