Softcover. Pomeroy OH, Carpenter Press, 1st, 1974, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 236 pages, illustrated by David Lynas. Includes numerous black and white photos of attractive female nudes. Ribald adventure in the style of Henry Miller. Johnson's second novel to be published, though the third to be written, takes up the whole issue of who gets published and why. It takes as its main subject the uproarious literary politics of the late 60's, when the government first set up the National Endowment for the Arts, and fools and crooks and serious editors asked for money to keep small-scale literary operations afloat in a sea of conglomerate-owned houses and declining public taste. One of the best parts is the description of the first COSMEP (Committee of Small Magazine Editors and Publishers) meeting. The two main characters, a truck driver named Gasserpod Peasporr Slocum, and his mentor, a small magazine editor, Ellis Schoenobatic, take us on a marvelous tour of the USA, into all the current scenes -- political, artistic, sexual -- and finally back to Sausalito and the girl they left behind. Clean copy.

Softcover. NY, Scala, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 224 pages. The diversity of New York City's people, cultures, religions, and backgrounds make it the indicator of American sexuality. It is black, white, gay, straight, rich, poor, rough, and tender all at once. From Margaret Sanger's dissemination of birth control to the Stonewall riot of 1969, New York City has repeatedly seen its sexual dynamics changed and American and international culture follow suit. Published to coincide with the much-anticipated opening of the Museum of Sex in New York, NYC Sex features conversations between major cultural figures and historians on sexual topics, including Grady T. Turner on "Sodom on the Hudson"; Martin Duberman and Joan Nestle on queers; Timothy J. Gilfoyle, Xaviera Hollander, and Tracy Quan on whores; Karen Finley, Luc Sante, Gene Simmons, and Art Spiegelman on the underground; and Vanessa del Rio, Legs McNeil, and Annie Sprinkle on porn. And what's a book about sex without pictures? In between the steamy conversation, NYC Sex posts photographs by Mapplethorpe, Ferrato and Gatewood; 19th-century drawings and photographs; film stills; posters; magazine pin-ups; and images of sex symbols past and present. It's a treat the whole family can enjoy. NYC Sex is the official book of the inaugural exhibition of the Museum of Sex, which will open in New York in September.

Hardcover. Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 189 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Art icon Jeff Koons lying on a giant plastic ball, Richard Serra disappearing into one of his vast steel sculptures, "king of theater" Claus Peymann sporting a cardboard crown ever since shooting his portrait of painter A.R. Penck in 1994, Oliver Mark (born 1963) has photographed countless artists, actors, politicians and other celebrities. Sometimes concentrating only on the subject against the most minimal setting possible, sometimes placing them in front of an artful background, Mark presents the rich and famous in constantly new and consistently trenchant ways, bringing their less apparent characteristics to light and casting them in disorienting circumstances. Other of Mark's subjects included here are Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, George Lucas, Sir Ridley Scott, Jenny Holzer, Mia Farrow, Norbert Tadeusz, Kenny Scharf, Georg Baselitz, David Chipperfield, Luc Tuymans, Cate Blanchett, Balthus and Sir Peter Ustinov. Besides Mark's most successful portraits, this volume also contains some of his most beautiful fashion photographs and other stills, many of which have appeared in several well-known magazines. Texts by Margit J. Mayer, Christoph Amend, Christian Boros and others round off this entertaining "best-of" collection.
Softcover. London, Vision On Publishing, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 224 pages, color and b&w photos by Greg Qilliams. "As a photographer and film enthusiast, I wanted to revive the genre of the Life Magazine set reports of the 1950s and 60s," says Williams. "For a variety of reasons, the past 30 years have seen photographic access to the film industry severely restricted, limited mainly to portrait shots. I wanted to re-establish reportage as a respected form of film photography." Planned as an editorial project exploring the film-making process in its entirety, On Set grew into a three-years-in-the-making report on British cinema as it once again blossomed with movies like The Talented Mr. Ripley, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Elizabeth. Gaining unprecedented access to sets, Williams was able to frame stars, directors and crew in their element and tell a complete, naturalistic story. Starting with Terry Gilliam's hands at the storyboarding stage and ending with Hugh Grant lip-syncing in post-production, On Set's fascinating insider's tale captures the leading lights of British and American film as they've rarely seen: Jude Law practices his dance moves; Matt Damon prepares for his close up; Renee Zellweger relaxes between takes.
