Softcover. New York , Museum of Modern Art , 1970, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Unpaginated (86 pages), maroon illustrated wrappers. This is an album of early photographs taken of the New York red light district around 1912 by Bellocq. Friedlander took prints from the original plates for this book and they provide a fascinating documentary on bordellos at this interesting time in history. Reputedly never taking 'dirty' pictures of the girls, Bellocq confined his endeavors to recording for posterity these ladies in both clad and unclad poses. The foreword takes the form of a conversation between Friedlander and Dan Leyrer, who was also a photographer and a contemporary of Bellocq.

Softcover. The Norton Gallery of Art, 1st, 1986, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 122 pages illustrated in color and b&w. Here the Norton Gallery of Arts Museum shows the exhibition of works by the distinguished Norwegian painter and printmaker Edvard Munch. For him, art must do nothing less than reveal the essential human condition. Having emerged as an accomplished Naturialist painter in the 1880s, he rejected Naturalism in his artistic manifesto of 1889-90. He began to paint images reflecting the stormy human psyche, and arranged his paintings into friezes to better communicate their meaning. At his death in 1944, his legacy included several thousand oil prints, reams of drawings, literary fragments, photographs and sculpture. Light sticker residue to front cover otherwise clean and bright.

With a text by noted historians Neil Harris and Teri J. Edelstein and featuring more than one hundred reproductions of the vivid and colorful work of French illustrators, En Guerre reaffirms the persuasive role that art can play in the service of political and military power.

Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to boards. Decoding Robert Indiana's work for a new generation, this revelatory book explores previously unknown autobiographical elements in the work of the Pop artist and printmaker. Famously proclaiming himself to be "an American painter of signs," Robert Indiana has created an enormous body of work, much of it boldly colored abstractions. In this incisive new examination of the artist, based on ongoing conversations with Indiana, art historian Martin Krause sifts through autobiographical clues within the artist's work and finds a wealth of affecting and affectionate references to Indiana's childhood, literary heroes, and the cultural icons of his generation. In addition, a penetrating essay by Pop art scholar John Wilmerding deconstructs Indiana's use of geometric shapes, making unexpected connections that enhance Krause's thesis. Accompanied by reproductions of more than 50 prints from the period 1960-2010--and focusing specifically on series such as Decade: Autoportraits, Vinalhaven Suite, and The Hartley Elegies as well as the "Love" and "Hope" images and studies of Marilyn Monroe, Picasso, and the Brooklyn Bridge--Krause's decryption of Indiana's visual language provides telling insight into the work of this quintessentially American artist.

The art form of Ukiyo-e first flourished in 17th-century Edo (now Tokyo), depicting landscapes, portraits of courtesans and actors. This book includes known masterpieces by such names as Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kunisada, as well as rare and unusual prints that have not been explored before, and thus serves as a survey of its subject.

Hardcover. Berlin, Hatje Cantz, reprint, 2023, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 319 pages. Text by David Campany, Jeff Wall, Hans-Michael Koetzle. Text in English and German. Fred Herzog is known for his unusual use of color in the 1950s and 1960s, a time when art photography was almost exclusively associated with black and white imagery. The Canadian photographer worked almost exclusively with Kodachrome slide film for over 50 years, and only in the past decade has technology allowed him to make archival pigment prints that match the exceptional color and intensity of the Kodachrome slide. In this respect, his photographs can be seen as a pre-figuration of the New Color photographers of the seventies. This book brings together over 230 images, many never before reproduced, and will feature essays by acclaimed authors David Campany and Hans-Michael Koetzle. Small bunp tp top of front board otherwise very good, clean copy.
