Shape of Things to Come: New Sculpture
by: Saatchi Gallery and Meghan Dailey

Hardcover. NY, Rizzoli, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 672 pages. Published in conjunction with the opening of the new Saatchi Gallery in London, one of today's most important institutions collecting and exhibiting contemporary art, this mammoth book is the most comprehensive volume on contemporary sculpture. The title itself refers to H. G. Wells's eponymous novel which envisioned the future and was a surprisingly accurate prophecy reflecting the author's own time. That book inspired Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which a great monolith is an iconic but enigmatic sculptural presence. This new book opens with an enormous, standing monolithic Styrofoam sculpture of a videocassette of 2001 and, like the Wells book, seeks to explore how sculpture will evolve in the coming decades. Clean, bright copy.

Stephen De Staebler: The Figure
by: Donald Kuspit

Softcover. San Francisco , Chronicle Books, 1st, 1988, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 143 pages, color illustrations. Stephen De Staebler's evocative rendering of the human body is epitomized by the life-size figures and torsos represented in more than seventy full-color illustrations in Stephen De Staebler: The Figure, the first full-length monograph on this major American artist. Noted critic Donald Kuspit, a contribut-ing editor of Art in America, discusses how De Staebler's use of clay and bronze reflects the metaphysical foundations of his art. De Staebler's "archaic" figures evoke a sense of the past, while at the same time raising questions essential to modern human existence. Clean copy.

Textiles of South-East Asia
by: Thompson, Angela

Hardcover. Crowood Press, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 222 pages., color plates. This impressive work encompasses history, anthropology, and an expert exposition of textile arts from this region where textiles may denote group identity and may represent a large portion of a family's wealth. The author draws upon both published information and her own extensive travels in the area, describing practices and techniques that she observed in use in situ. She illustrates cultural and historical patterns in costume, often with the aid of temple paintings, sculpture, and historic photographs to supplement current images. Her descriptions of techniques, for example of weaving, are admirably balanced -- detailed enough to inform while presented with sufficient general information for a non-specialist reader. The illustrative material is good, often her own or her son's photographs, that shows the labor-intensive processes and world-class skills as well as the resulting spectacular museum pieces.

by: Caroline Repchuk (Editor), Inc. Marvel Characters (Illustrator), Andy Mansfield (Designer)

Hardcover. Candlewick , 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Glazed boards, 16 pages. The first in a series spotlighting Marvel superheroes, this trapezoid-shaped offering combines comic-book excerpts with action-packed pop-ups to introduce the web-slinging wonder. Four foldout comic-strip sections spread throughout the book relate Peter Parker's story: the bookish teen's fateful encounter with a radioactive spider; his testing of his new powers at a wrestling match and donning of the familiar costume; the murder of his beloved Uncle Ben; and his capture of the perpetrator and transformation from self-absorbed media star to justice-serving hero. Colorful 3-D sculptures leap out at readers with every turn of the page as they meet seven of Spider-Man's most ferocious foes, including the Green Goblin, Doc Ock, and the Vulture. These spreads feature a storyboard retelling of how each villain gained his superhuman abilities; a slide-out tab listing his vital statistics, skills, weapons, and cool gadgets; and, in most cases, an encounter between the bad guy and Spidey. Additional pull-out files highlight other key characters. The pop-up images, many embellished with bright metallic paper, retain the nostalgic appeal of the retro comic-book art while injecting an element of movement and excitement. After

The Art of Romare Bearden
by: Bearden, Romare and Ruth E. Fine, Mary Lee Corlett

Softcover. Washington DC, National Gallery of Art , 2nd pr., 203, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 334 pages illustrated with 224 color plates, 86 black & white. One of America's most innovative artists, Romare Bearden (1911-1988) made colorful and passionate images that reflected his life in a time of creative ferment. His influences ranged from the old masters to African art, as well as the world around him: popular religion and ritual, jazz clubs and brothels, the history and literature of his time, and the places he lived (the rural South, Pittsburgh and Harlem, the Caribbean island of St. Martin). The resulting images are fresh and evocative, filled with quirky details and rhythmic forms. This authoritative and beautiful book, which accompanies a major retrospective opening at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., provides a provocative and absorbing look at a beloved artist. The Art of Romare Bearden showcases compelling examples of his pioneering work: complex collages and photostats; watercolors, gouaches, and oils; little-known landscapes; his only known sculpture; costume designs; and book illustrations. Mildwear to corners otherwise very good, clean copy.
