Here the Norton Gallery of Arts Museum shows the exhibition of works by the distinguished Norwegian painter and printmaker Edvard Munch. For him, art must do nothing less than reveal the essential human condition. Having emerged as an accomplished Naturialist painter in the 1880s, he rejected Naturalism in his artistic manifesto of 1889-90. He began to paint images reflecting the stormy human psyche, and arranged his paintings into friezes to better communicate their meaning. For their first show at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in 2001 they papered over the windows with the announcement "Opening Soon Prada." Pursuing and inverting this theme, in 2005 they installed a mocked-up Prada store on a deserted road near Marfa, Texas. They have recreated hospitals and prison cells, and have reconfigured gallery spaces to spatially deter their would-be audience. "Our aim is to investigate some of the power structures that these spaces derive from, and by exchanging and replacing some of these structures, show how fragile they actually are." This monograph is the first extensive survey of their work to date.

Painter Francesco Clemente once said of Eric Fischl, "If life is what happens to you as you make other plans, then 'life' is Eric Fischl's subject matter." Though Fischl is best known for his figurative paintings, this monograph presents a 2007 series of 13 sculptures and corresponding large-format gouache works. Cast in polyester and resin, the life-sized, three-dimensional nudes enter into tense dialogue with the drawings, depicting the same element of human struggle that we find in Fischl's paintings. Naked bodies without context or reference, engaged in no specific narrative, offer any number of possible interpretations. They allow the viewer to indulge in careful observation, daring us to penetrate the surface patina of the sculptures to see if anything lies beneath. A special section includes a complete catalogue raisonee of the sculptural work from 1975 through 2007.
