Managing White Supremacy: Race, Politics, and Citizenship in Jim Crow Virginia
by: J. Douglas Smith

Softcover. Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina Press, 1st pbk, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 411 pages, b&w illustrations. Tracing the erosion of white elite paternalism in Jim Crow Virginia, Douglas Smith reveals a surprising fluidity in southern racial politics in the decades between World War I and the Supreme Court's 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision. Smith draws on official records, private correspondence, and letters to newspapers from otherwise anonymous Virginians to capture a wide and varied range of black and white voices. African Americans emerge as central characters in the narrative, as Smith chronicles their efforts to obtain access to public schools and libraries, protection under the law, and the equitable distribution of municipal resources. This acceleration of black resistance to white supremacy in the years before World War II precipitated a crisis of confidence among white Virginians, who, despite their overwhelming electoral dominance, felt increasingly insecure about their ability to manage the color line on their own terms. Exploring the everyday power struggles that accompanied the erosion of white authority in the political, economic, and educational arenas, Smith uncovers the seeds of white Virginians' resistance to civil rights activism in the second half of the twentieth century. Light marking to 10 pages, otherwise clean, very good.

Matthew Barney: The Cremaster Cycle (SIGNED)
by: Barney, Matthew; Spector, Nancy & Neville Wakefield

Hardcover. NY, Guggenheim Museum, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Hardcover First Edition SIGNED on title page by Matthew Barney. With essays by Nancy Spector and Neville Wakefield. Text in English. Published on the occasion of the exhibitions in Cologne, Paris and New York, 2002 - 2003. Cremaster Cycle is the definitive guide for 'The Cremaster Cycle', the Matthew Barney's epic five-part film series. The book is filled with hundreds of Barney's fantastical images which use the biological model of sexual difference as its conceptual departure point. Three essays by Barney experts articulate the series' diverse themes and explore the artist's innovative aesthetic vocabulary; interviews with key collaborators, a composer, costume designer, make-up artist, technicians and actors reveal his working process. A trailblazing essay by Curator of Contemporary Art Nancy Spector charts Barney's work from the 1990s to the present and provides critical insights into the aesthetic vocabulary of his five 'Cremaster' films, while Neville Wakefield's 'Cremaster Glossary' illuminates the films most far-flung references with citations from sources as diverse as Freud's psychoanalytic studies, Mormon law and lore, and hardcore music fanzines. In addition to stills from the five films, the book features related sculptures, photographs, drawings and storyboards. Barney himself collaborated on all aspects of this extraordinary publication, including the selection of over 700 images, most of them never before published. 530 pages. 32,2x23,5x6,2 cm Hardcover with plastic dust jacket with green and black cover title . Clean, as new. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

Mexican Phoenix: Our Lady of Guadalupe: Image and Tradition Across Five Centuries
by: Brading, D.A.

Hardcover. UK, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 444 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Light fading to dust jacket front. Light edgewear to dj. Black and white pictures throughout. Clean, tight copy. In 1999 Pope John Paul II proclaimed Our Lady of Guadalupe a patron saint of the Americas. According to oral tradition and historical documents, in 1531 Mary appeared as a beautiful Aztec princess to Juan Diego, a poor Indian. Speaking to him in his own language, she asked him to tell the bishop her name was La Virgen de Guadalupe and that she wanted a church built on the mountain. During a second visit, the image of the Virgin miraculously appeared on his cape. Through the centuries, the enigmatic power of this image has aroused such fervent devotion in Mexico that it has served as the banner of the rebellion against Spanish rule and, despite skepticism and anticlericalism, still remains a potent symbol of the modern nation. In Mexican Phoenix, David Brading traces the intellectual origins, the sudden efflorescence, and the theology that has sustained the tradition of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Brading also documents the interaction of religion and patriotism, and describes how the image has served as a banner both for independence and for the Church in its struggle against the Liberal and revolutionary state.

Modern Medea: A Family Story of Slavery and Child-Murder from the Old South
by: Weisenburger, Steven

Hardcover. NY, Hill and Wang, BC Ed., 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 352 pages, with illustrations. Minor dust jacket edge wear, otherwise, very clean and tight copy. In the middle of a frigid Sunday night in January 1856, a twenty-two-year-old Kentucky slave named Margaret Gamer gathered up her family and raced north, toward Cincinnati and freedom. But Margaret's master followed just hours behind and soon had the fugitives surrounded. Thinking all was lost, Margaret seized a butcher knife and nearly decapitated her two-year-old daughter, crying out that she would rather see her children dead than returned to slavery. She was turning on her other three children when slave catchers burst in and subdued her.Margaret Garner's child-murder electrified the United States, inspiring the longest, most spectacular fugitive-slave trial in history. Abolitionists and slaveholders fought over the meaning of the murder, and the case came to symbolize the ills of the Union in those last dark decades before the Civil War.

Nat King Cole
by: Epstein, Daniel Mark

Softcover. NY, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, pbk proof, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 420 pages. Publishers uncorrected proof with flyer promoting the title laid in. The first major biography of the great jazz pianist and singer, written with the full cooperation of his family. When he died in 1965, at age forty-five, Nat King Cole was already a musical legend. As famous as Frank Sinatra, he had sold more records than anyone but Bing Crosby. Written with the narrative pacing of a novel, this absorbing biography traces Cole's rise to fame, from boy-wonder jazz genius to megastar in a racist society. Daniel Mark Epstein brings Cole and his times to vivid life: his precocious entrance onto the vibrant jazz scene of his hometown, Chicago; the creation of his trio and their rise to fame; the crossover success of such songs as "Straighten Up and Fly Right"; and his years as a pop singer and television star, the first African American to have his own show. Epstein examines Cole's insistence on changing society through his art rather than political activism, the romantic love story of Cole and Maria Ellington, and Cole's famous and influential image of calm, poise, and elegance, which concealed the personal turmoil and anxiety that undermined his health.

INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the half-title page. After the triumphs of Montgomery and Selma, Martin Luther King, Jr., rallied his forces and headed north. What happened? This book is the first to give us the full story--a vivid account of how the Chicago Freedom Movement of 1965-1967 attempted to combat northern segregation. Northern Protest captures this new kind of campaign for civil rights at a fateful turning point, with effects that pulse through the nation's race relations to the day.
