Hardcover. San Diego CA, Gulliver Books, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 52 pages. signed by both author and photographer on the dedication page. Beginning with an eloquent introduction to the Everglades, this collection of 20 poems transports readers to that unique place and challenges them to look at it intently, often through the eyes of creatures living there. Striking, full-color photographs by Ted Levin provide glimpses of a wide variety of animals, plants, and landscapes. Each poem appears on a double-page spread along with one full-page photo and one or more smaller ones. The voice of the verse varies. Some are in third-person narration: "Some rivers rush to the sea. They push and tumble and fall / but the Everglades is a river / with no hurry in her at all." Other poems are from the animals' viewpoint, like this from the otter: "But there are gators where I swim. / My life is not all play. / Sometimes I am the hunter. / Sometimes I am the prey." Clean copy.

Watertown, MA, Charlesbridge Publishing, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Color illustrations by Matt Faulkner. Scatterbrain Sam is the distant down-home cousin of "Morgan and the Pot of Brains," a Welsh tale told by Ellen Pugh. This adaptation is a funny, folksy tall tale filled with exaggeration and sly humor. It is set in mid-20th-century America, and Jackson has freely updated and modified the old story. Sam is so scatterbrained, "he didn't know nothing about nothing," so he asks Widder Woman to help fix his brains. She offers a glue-stew remedy for which the young man must provide the flavoring with things that he loves. When that proves to be too difficult, he is given riddles to solve and only with the help of Maizie Mae, a golden-haired aviatrix with her own stunt plane, does Sam begin to find the solution. When Maizie falls into the sticky concoction, Sam follows the glue flood through town and finally realizes what he truly loves. He takes the Widder's advice and marries Maizie and they fly off together into the sunset. This is a rollicking good tale with exuberant cartoonlike watercolor-and-gouache paintings.

For many children of the sixties, the gift of a Schwinn was a ticket to freedom, a chance to feel the wind on their face and the steady rotation of rubber at their feet. The Schwinn took many through their childhood adventures, with memories filled of after school, free-range bike rides around the neighborhood with friends, the late afternoon sun shining off of the gleaming painted frame and stainless steel fenders. The 1960s and 70s saw a boom of Schwinn Sting-Rays, which appealed to young riders who had to have the hottest 'muscle' bike in town, and sold like hotcakes to parents everywhere scrambling to get the best Christmas present ever for their kids. From its early years dominating the youth market with Sting-Rays to the teen-friendly Varsity and Continental models to its most recent parent-friendly iterations of the Easy-Steer and Roadster Trikes, the Schwinn weaves itself through 120 years of American history. Clean, bright copy.
